THE UNDERPANTS presented by The Carnegie through April 26. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

As the lights come up and music plays, Theo Maske (Randy lee Baily) and his wife, Louise (Erin Ward) have a pantomimed confrontation over “The Underpants” incident. I thought this was a great introduction to the farce I was about to see. Unfortunately once the dialogue started, that energy seemed to disappear, offering a very sedate and conversational farce for the most part. As the second act progressed toward its hectic conclusion the energy level did reach farce-level.

Tom Manning as Klinglehoff, Jodie Schwegmann-Meyn as Gertrude & Erin Ward as Louise Maske. Photo by Mikki Schaffner.

Among the talented ensemble, I really enjoyed Jodie Schwegmann-Meyn as Gertrude. Every time she entered a scene, she brought a great character and great energy to the stage. Tom Manning’s character of Klinlehoff makes an appearance late in the second act. It’s a fun role but I had issues understanding his dialogue at times.

The set was a stand out element of the production. Scenic designer Ryan Howell created a great multi-level play space. The color scheme of the set complemented the colors of the theater so well that the set looked like it belong there.

Overall a good production that hasn’t found its equilibrium yet in characterization and tone.

My rating: 3.75 out of 5

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.

LCT Review of THE UNDERPANTS

LCT_VThis review has been reposted courtesy of the League of Cincinnati Theatres. For more LCT reviews click here to visit their reviews page.

If you are looking for a lighthearted night out, The Carnegie Theatre concludes its season with The Underpants, a bedroom farce adapted by comedian Steve Martin. The Underpants is an outrageous, over-the-top story about a young bride who creates a sensation when her underpants fall down while watching a parade for a turn-of-the-century German king.

Randy Lee Baily as Theo, Erin Ward as Louise, Michael Hall as Cohen & Brian Griffin as Versati. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

The audience does not actually see the scandalous incident. The play opens in the living room of Frau Louise and Herr Theo’s home, a respectable middle-class, newlywed couple. Having just heard of Louise’s underpants incident, Theo (Randy Lee Bailey), a stuffy and pompous civil servant, has come home from work and is mortified — not for Louise (Erin Ward), but for himself, imagining all sorts of repercussions from the embarrassing incident that will affect his job and their overall livelihood. Louise, on the other hand, is not at all concerned.

To make financial ends meet, the couple rent a single room to two boarders, who were attracted by the “wardrobe malfunction” and are willing to pay any price for the chance to live under the same roof as Frau Louise, leading to many comic and somewhat bawdy situations. Versati (Brian Griffin) is a playboy poet who Louise is actually attracted to and Cohen (Michael Hall), is a creepy guy who chases Louise around the apartment. In the thick of all this chaos is the nosey neighbor, Gertrude (Jodie Schwegmann-Meyn), who is the highlight of this Carnegie production as she encourages Louise’s enjoyment and sexual arousal from all this unexpected attention.

All-in-all, the play addresses the roles of men and women, the balance of power in a marriage, and lighthearted sexual tension. The set design by Ryan Howell is appealing and the costumes by Jim Stump deserve kudos–they display the elegance of the period but also add to the absurdity of some of the characters. The cast is loaded with talented local actors who have proved their abilities many times over in past productions, but never quite gelled into a stylistically cohesive unit in this production. Martin’s script is a fast paced ninety minute one-act play, but The Carnegie production was somewhat tepid and drawn-out.

The Underpants continues at The Carnegie through April 26.

THE CARNEGIE’S THEATRE SERIES PROMISES ENTERTAINING
2015-16 SEASON COMPRISED OF OLD AND NEW CLASSICS

COVINGTON, KY- The last year has heralded change for The Carnegie with the installation of new Theatre Director, Maggie Perrino, but the great shows, phenomenal talent, and welcoming atmosphere of The Carnegie Theatre Series remain the same. Taking a cue from last season’s blockbuster production of WEST SIDE STORY, the highest grossing show in The Carnegie’s history, this season will be chock full of hits that offer something for everyone.

The Carnegie is excited to announce its 2015-16 Theatre Series, inviting you to the historic Otto M. Budig Theatre in August for a little COMPANY. In November, The Carnegie takes on an air of mystery as it presents the comedy-thriller SLEUTH, a delightful game of cat-and-mouse that will keep audiences guessing right up until the end. A light, but creative staging of THE WIZARD OF OZ takes you away from the January winter blahs with a wonderful flight of fancy and THE LAST FIVE YEARS closes the season in April with spellbinding songs that will tug at your heartstrings.

Playing weekends January 21 – 31, 2016

We’re off to see THE WIZARD OF OZ at The Carnegie! Add a little fantasy and adventure to those gray January days with a trip to the Emerald City to see Dorothy, Toto and the rest of the colorful residents of Oz. Imaginatively reproduced for The Carnegie stage, and impeccably accompanied by The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, this classic tale is sure to delight fans both old and young.

Based on the hit MGM film, THE WIZARD OF OZ brings out the child in all of us with songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard.” THE WIZARD OF OZ will be a lightly staged production reminiscent of our sold-out staging of THE SOUND OF MUSIC presented in 2014.

What does “lightly staged” mean? In a lightly staged production, music and storytelling take priority over the more physical aspects of the show. Audiences will see musicians onstage, beautiful costumes, evocative lighting, and creative settings. They will not see scripts in-hand, a multitude of props, or extensive scenic/costume changes.

Ten Performances:
Thursday, January 21, 7:30pm ● Friday, January 22, 7:30pm ● Saturday, January 23, 2pm & 7:30pm ● Sunday, January 24, 3pm
Thursday, January 28, 7:30pm ● Friday, January 29, 7:30pm ● Saturday, January 30, 2pm & 7:30pm ● Sunday, January 31, 3pm
