Laugh Your Stockings Off This December with REINDEER SESSIONS at Human Race

HRTC_Reindeer SessionsThe Human Race Theatre Company’s tradition of alternative December entertainment gets a new addition with the world premiere of Eric Ulloa’s Reindeer Sessions.

After a fight that left history’s most famous reindeer with a broken red nose, Blitzen finds himself assigned to anger management therapy with Dr. Arbor. Until now, Blitzen has been a model employee at Kringle Enterprises, so it’s up to Dr. Arbor to get to the bottom of his frustration.

“Eric has created a funny, imaginative twist on a story that many people know and love,” comments Emily N. Wells, The Human Race Theatre Company’s Artistic Director. “This story packs an emotional punch that is so satisfying in a holiday show and provides a few delightful surprises along the way.”

Igor Goldin (A Christmas Story, 26 Pebbles), a frequent collaborator of Ulloa’s, returns to Dayton after directing the recent Carnegie Hall concert of Austen’s Pride. The cast features Yellow Springs, Ohio resident Teri Clark Linden (A Christmas Story) as Dr. Arbor and Dayton native Rico Romalus Parker (Barbecue) as Blitzen.

Joining Goldin on the production team are: Jeff Heater, Scenic Design; John Rensel, Lighting Design; Ameera Ansari, Costume Design; Brando Triantafallou, Sound Design; Sarah Gomes, Props; Mark Tynan, Production Stage Manager.

Reindeer Sessions will play in the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton, December 13 – 23, 2023.  Tickets are on sale through the Dayton Live box office, 937-228-3630, or online at www.humanracetheatre.org   For press ticket requests, please contact Tiffany Countryman, Engagement and Learning Coordinator at tiffany@humanracetheatre.org

The KSO Brings MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING to Greaves Concert Hall Dec. 15-16

KSO_logoMERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING
(Forty sacred, pop, traditional & classical yuletide favorites)

7:30 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2023
7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023

Greaves Concert Hall, NKU

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s programming philosophy seeks to presenting works first or at least differently than other orchestras. After 1999, the KSO left the Christmas holidays to local institutions with their annual traditional fare.

Stumbling upon a special edition re-issue of the 1978 Carpenters Christmas Portrait album, KSO music director James Cassidy, found a treasure trove of nearly 40 tunes associated with
Christmas. Traditional carols, pop songs, sacred tunes, standards, even The Nutcracker were all in this wonderful frappe of yuletide favorites featuring Karen and Richard Carpenter, backed by a studio choir and orchestra playing arrangements of Billy May, Peter Knight and Richard Carpenter.

The Carpenters were the #1 selling American music act of the 1970s, selling over 100 million singles and albums world-wide. Richard’s piano, writing and producing together with sister Karen’s drums, and inimitable contralto vocals produced a 14-year run of hit recordings
(including 3 number ones), before Karen’s untimely death in 1983.

“I always thought this Christmas album would make a great live concert, but getting it from CD or vinyl to notes on a page, then finding someone, to not necessarily imitate Karen Carpenter, but to bring her vocal style to the mix was going to be a challenge. It all finally came together when KSO long time (27 years) arranger Terry LaBolt moved back to Cincinnati from Bloomington (IU), and agreed to take on adapting the recording to live performance. Terry also recalled a vocalist — Denise Parroco — whom he had worked with at Kings Productions in Mason and in Virginia, who had recently sung “Merry Christmas, Darling” as a video Christmas card to friends (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ntfe1p8DJU),” Cassidy explained.

It is extremely rare for fans to experience an entire album performed live or enjoy the nostalgia of one of America’s most celebrated recording duos, all wrapped in a bow for KSO holiday audiences.

This season try something old and new for your holiday/arts entertainment by joining Denise Parroco, an octet of professional singers, and the KSO for Merry Christmas, Darling (two nights only) — 7:30 p.m. Friday & Saturday, December 15 & 16 at Greaves Concert Hall on the campus of NKU. For additional info and tickets — kyso.org or (859) 431-6216. (Mistletoe not included.)

She launched out as a solo artist in the Contemporary Christian Music genre, releasing her first solo album, Don’t Give In, on an independent label in 1992. Upon acceptance of a position as the Director of Music & Arts for New Life Christian Fellowship in Chesapeake, VA, she shifted her focus toward leading and directing worship for many years. During that time she and her husband recorded and produced several worship recordings and compilation albums, including albums with churches in Ghana and Belgium. Denise has always held a great love for jazz and standards, and has sung with several jazz bands through the years.

Denise is currently the Vice President and oversees the company’s operations.

Denise has recently returned to her love of recording and her latest projects are Everything is Beautiful (EP 2020) and Carpenters Tribute (EP 2023). Her new release, Christmastime, was produced by Jim Parroco with arrangements and orchestrations by Emmy-nominated composer Rob Pottorf. TWO POINT OH Review

Two Point OH presented by Falcon Theatre through December 2nd. For this addition to my original LCT review, I attended the second Friday performance (aka Rachel Mock’s opening night).

FT_Two Point Oh 2

Do you know how rare it is that a reviewer gets to see a show more than once in order to contribute to their write-up? We’re talking nearly as rare as white peacocks or a corpse flower. (Google them, kids – the latter was on display at the Cincinnati Zoo just last summer.) Fortunately, I was offered the opportunity recently to see Falcon Theatre’s Two Point OH one more time so I could see Rachel Mock step into her role as Melanie Leeds after having the privilege of seeing her understudy opening weekend.

One of the things I am not sure I mentioned enough in my original review [for the League of Cincinnati Theatres] is just how smart and engaging Jefferey Jackson’s script is. Coupled with talented actors and creative direction by Steve Phelan, I had no problem seeing the show a second time.

Everyone in the cast was just as good if not better the second time around – so I won’t bore them with additional praise. But they are really brilliant! However, this viewing had a specific purpose and it was to see the artist originally cast as Melanie step into the role after having to step out due to illness. Rachel Mock impresses from the get-go in portraying the complicated feelings of Elliot Leeds’ wife and then widow. Without spoiling specific plot points, Ms. Mock’s build into her feelings of grief and loss is heart-breaking and very relatable. She has seemingly mastered this role’s rollercoaster of emotions and reactions and the audience truly goes on that ride with her. Further, I was impressed with Ms. Mock’s poise in showing both verbal and physical changes as her emotional status fluctuated. Brava to Ms. Mock and to everyone involved!

You still have three more chances to catch this show before the hardware becomes obsolete: Thursday November 30th, Friday December 1st, and Saturday December 2nd. For more information about the show – including how to purchase tickets – please visit Falcon’s site here.
