Auditions Announced for URINETOWN at Footlighters

Auditions:

  • Sunday, December 3rd 5:30-8:30pm
  • Monday, December 4th 7-9pm

Callbacks: Wednesday, December 6th 7pm-9pm

Location: The Stained Glass Theatre, 802 York Street, Newport KY 41011

  • Please prepare 16 bars of a song that demonstrates your best vocal ability, preferably musical theatre, not from “Urinetown”.
  • Monologues are not necessary.  Acting ability will be judged by the “selling” of your song.
  • Please come dressed and prepared for an energetic dance audition.
  • Callbacks will include singing songs from the show and performing cold readings from the script.

Performance dates: May 3-18, 2018

Synopsis: A hilarious satire that earned 3 Tony Awards, URINETOWN is a story set in a Gotham-like city, where a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs.

Cast Size: Ensemble Cast of 8-10 Men/5-6 Women + Possible small Ensemble

Dance Requirements: Strong sense of rhythm, musical theatre movement & lots of energy

  • Officer Lockstock
    The tongue-in-cheek narrator of our story, he is a corrupt policeman who secretly kills off the guilty offenders. Bold, brash, and larger than life in many ways.

  • Penelope Pennywise
    The tough, jaded warden of the poorest, filthiest town urinal. She is Cladwell’s one-time lover and mother to Hope who eventually softens her temper.

  • Bobby Strong
    The dashing, rebellious everyman who works for Miss Pennywise at the poorest, filthiest town urinal. He becomes an unsuspecting protagonist and romantic hero when he starts a revolution and falls in love with Hope Cladwell.

    Cladwell’s ravishingly beautiful daughter, torn between her father and her new love for Bobby. She begins as an innocent, naive angel but becomes vengeful and determined after being exposed to her father’s evil.

  • Joseph “Old Man” Strong
    Bobby’s rebellious father. His refusal to pay the fee sends him to Urinetown, ultimately launching the revolution. Optional Doubling as HOT BLADES HARRY.

    One of the Poor, he is an idiotic man-child. Optional Doubling as DR. BILLEAUX.

    One of the Poor, she is excitable and easily panicked. Optional Doubling as CALDWELL’S SECRETARY.

    One of the Poor. She is foul-mouthed, impulsive, and accusatory. Optional Doubling as MRS. MILLENIUM.

  • Caldwell B. Cladwell
    The evil president and owner of the Urine Good Company. He is a miserly money-grubber who gleefully exploits the poor.

  • Josephine “Ma” Strong
    Bobby’s mother and Joseph’s wife. A strong-willed woman with a bite, able to withstand the hard hand life has dealt her. Optional Doubling as OLD WOMAN.

  • Hot Blades Harry
    One of the Poor, he is a psychopathic and can become a violent loose cannon. Optional Doubling as JOSEPH “OLD MAN” STRONG.

Directors Sought for 2018-2019 Season at Footlighters

fli_logoThe Footlighters, Inc. is accepting submissions for directors for its 2018-2019 season. If you would like to be considered, please send the following information to Janet Wisner, Chair of the Director/Play Selection Committee, at janet.wisner@possible.com. Please include ‘Director Submission’ in the subject line of the email.

  • A one-page letter of interest briefly detailing 2-4 shows you’re interested in directing.
  • A theater resume that includes your contact information.

The deadline to submit materials is Friday, September 15, 2017. Janet will contact interested directors the week of September 25th to schedule interviews, which will take place at the Stained Glass Theatre on October 8 & 9. When you are selected for an interview, you will be asked to provide more specific information about the shows you are interested in directing, including a budget projection.

Plans are to produce a 4-show season for 2018-2019 to include 2 large-scale musicals, 1 smaller musical, and 1 non-musical. Exact show dates will be decided by the Board of Directors this fall.

Footlighters, Inc. was founded in 1963 and since 1987 has owned its own facility, The Stained Glass Theatre in Newport, KY. It continually attracts outstanding talent for its productions, and has received local, state, and national awards for outstanding production quality, individual and ensemble performances, and technical achievements.
