CSC’s HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES Earns LCT Recommendation

Brent Vimtrup, Nicholas Rose as Dr. Watson & Jeremy Dubin as Sherlock Holmes.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES as a recommended production.

In this regional premiere, the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson are on the job to investigate the mysterious case of the “hound of hell” that stalks the moors. This fast-paced farcical adaptation of the classic novel is performed by only three actors tackling dozens of roles.

Panelists recommended the production as “a fun night for the whole family” and “a delightful take-off of Sherlock Holmes”, filled with “merry pranks” and “physical comedy”.

HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES continues through August 12th. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincyshakes.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Matt Dentino as George M. Cohan.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Showboat Majestic’s GEORGE M! with a nomination for Matt Dentino as lead actor in a musical.

GEORGE M! tells the life story of George M. Cohan, a giant of the American musical theater who gave us such songs as “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “Over There”, “You’re A Grand Old Flag”, and “Give My Regards to Broadway”, and who transformed the Broadway variety show into a book-driven musical where song and dance advance plot.

Matt Dentino, who played George M. Cohan, was nominated for lead actor in a musical. Panelists thought that he was “polished, confident and utterly in command of the role” and that he showed “great enthusiasm and showmanship”.

GEORGE M! continues through July 29th. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Showboat’s ARSENIC AND OLD LACE Earns LCT Nomination

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Showboat Majestic’s ARSENIC AND OLD LACE with a nomination for scenic design.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is an American comedy classic, in which we meet the charming and innocent old ladies, the Brewster sisters, who populate their cellar with the remains of socially and religiously “acceptable” roomers; the antics of their brother who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt; and the murderous activities of another brother while the younger brother Mortimer is trying to get married to a regular girl.

Matt Lape was nominated for scenic design. Panelists thought it was an “impressive” and “ingenious” use of space, which made “every inch of it workable for the actors”.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE continues through July 1st. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

2012 Cincinnati Fringe Awards

BOMBUS AND BERRYLINNE. Photo by Deogracias Lerma.

The 2012 Cincinnati Fringe is one for the record books. Attendance was up almost 7% with total attendance of nearly 7,700. As reported early, Saturday, June 2nd had the highest single day attendance in nine years of 1,100.

From my experience, this year’s festival was also the best to date. Well-organized and well-run, this year’s festival chugged along like a well-oiled machine. Congratulations to everyone involved for a great job.

(CINCINNATI, MAY 9, 2012)– Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of THE SECOND CITY 2: LESS PRIDE…MORE PORK has earned a League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) Award for its acting ensemble. The show, an all-new follow-up to last year’s record-breaking fall production by The Second City, closes the theatre’s Thompson Shelterhouse season.

In THE SECOND CITY 2, the Chicago comedy troupe once again sets its razor-sharp sights on Cincinnati, with a special emphasis on stories that have captured the city’s attention since their last visit. The streetcar once again plays a role, as well as the Reds and the opening of the Banks. The first Second City Playhouse production was the longest running and highest grossing in Shelterhouse history.

According to LCT panelists, the show’s cast “did a fantastic job with the script and were really funny. … Overall, an excellent show.” The ensemble includes Cody Dove, Sayjal Joshi, Amy Roeder, John Sabine, Tim Stoltenberg and Travis Turner.

THE SECOND CITY 2 continues through July 1. Tickets are available at www.cincyplay.com.
