After 23 years, Cincinnati Landmark Productions will no longer be operating the Showboat Majestic, the last original floating theater in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Their final production, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES, opened this weekend and panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) wanted to take the opportunity to recognize this tribute to Showboat as well as the many years of entertainment and music that it has provided.

As Landmark’s website describes it, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES is “a musical revue, featuring great songs from dozens of past shows, comic sketches, specialty dance numbers and a few surprises – in and out of the audience.”

Panelists recommended the show as “a fond farewell to the historic Showboat’s run…filled with melodrama, sketch comedy, and a parody of musicals,” as well as a historical review of the Showboat with audience participation. It was “a fun way to end the season for the showboat…The performers are all familiar favorites to ‘showboaters’ and it is obvious this is a love letter from their hearts to the boat and the ever loyal subscribers.” As one panelist put it, “I felt I was witnessing an important moment in the history of Cincinnati theatre…I heartily recommend the production as a chance to experience this theatre icon for what may be the last time and a chance to say goodbye.”

SHOWBOAT FOLLIES runs through September 29th. Tickets may be obtained on-line at http://www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized lead actors Christine Dye and Mike Dennis from Showboat’s DON’T DRINK THE WATER for their excellent performances.

In this cold-war comedy by Woody Allen, an American tourist and his family are taken for spies in a country behind the Iron Curtain and must be protected by the US ambassador’s bumbling son who is running the embassy.

Panelists praised the performances of Christine Dye and Mike Dennis, as the tourists, Marion and Walter Hollander: they “carried the play into its best moments…Both showed great comic timing in the machine-gun fire dialogue of Woody Allen…Their on-stage chemistry was great and made me feel like I was back home in Jersey.”

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.
