Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have awarded Untethered Theatre’s production of ALL NEW PEOPLE a 4 star recommendation.

In ALL NEW PEOPLE, by Zach Braff, Charlie’s birthday first goes wrong when Emma stumbles in, disrupting his suicide attempt. Taking this as divine intervention, Emma demands that she, Myron – a firefighter with some interesting extra-curriculars – and the bubbly Kim throw Charlie a party to convince him to keep living. Throughout the course of the night, aided by flashbacks, the group learns that everyone is running from something, but in the end, life is what you make it.

Panelists called ALL NEW PEOPLE “humorous, highly paced and intriguing…funny and bittersweet”. They praised director Jared Doren: “he has the actors prepared and in synch…he gave them plenty of opportunies to stretch.” The entire ensemble was applauded for the “depth and believability” of their performances.

Untethered’s ALL NEW PEOPLE runs through November 30th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.untetheredtheater.com.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT party in the summer. The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. Know Theatre’s Season Continues with BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS

KNOW THEATRE’S ADAPTATION SEASON CONTINUES WITH
BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS
By Lila Rose Kaplan

Directed by Tamara Winters

People don’t just disappear.

A blue scarf.
A piece of chalk.
A pocketful of leaves.

KTC_Bureau of Missing PersonsThese clues lead Angela on a quest from her New York apartment to a cave in Moscow in search of someone missing. Inspired by the magical realism of Jorge Luis Borges, Bureau of Missing Personsexplores what it takes to come back to life when you’ve been smothered by grief.

Performances of BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS run November 29 – December 20.

Directed by Know Theatre Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters in her MainStage directing debut,BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is a poignant tale of loss and redemption. Part mystery, part love story,BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is full of surprising imagery and unexpected storytelling—making it a perfect show for the Know.

BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS features a stellar ensemble cast of Cincinnati actors. Starring as Angela is Kate Glasheen, last seen at the Know in 2013’s Bull. Joining her as Angela’s beleaguered fiancé Richard is Rico Reid, alongside Sam Ray as Simon, a kindergarten teacher swept up into Angela’s voyage to Moscow. Rico and Sam last appeared as Ahab and Ishmael in Moby Dick. Adrianne Underhill, previously seen 2013’s in When the Rain Stops Falling, returns to the Know as Angela’s feisty mother Vivian. Rounding out the cast is Know Theatre audience favorite Burgess Byrd as the mischievous and enigmatic Patrice.

In keeping with the magical realism style that inspired this tale, Lila Rose Kaplan has created a world in which realistic, believable characters find themselves in impossible scenarios of imagination and wonder. Director Tamara Winters says, “We are crafting an experience where the audience’s imaginations can make whimsical leaps, all while exploring relationships that resound; connections that mirror our own desires. With this powerful cast and this poetic little script, I can promise our audience a night of magic, mischief, joy, and redemption. It is an elegant story of how we heal, and one I believe isperfectly timed for the holidays.”

Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford adds, “I first heard a reading of this play in 2009, and ever since I’ve been looking for a way to produce it. It’s the kind of script that calls to be staged, and it’s exciting to have that become a reality with this fantastic cast and production team.”

BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is a regional premiere, only the second full production of this charming play, and the first outside of New York. It runs November 29 – December 20 at Know Theatre. This production’s imaginative staging, beautiful imagery, and moving performances will make it a show to remember.

NKU Presents Regional Premiere of FAILURE: A LOVE STORY

NKU PRESENTS REGIONAL PREMEIRE OF ‘FAILURE: A LOVE STORY’

NKU_Failure a Love StoryHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University continues its 14|15 Theatre and Dance season with the regional premiere of FAILURE: A LOVE STORY by the “hugely talented Chicago writer” (Chicago Tribune) Philip Dawkins, November 20 – December 7.

With the very opening lines, we know the basic plot of this anything-but-predictable, “wildly charming” (Chicago Reader) and “fantastically macabre” (Huffington Post) new play set in 1920s Chicago: “Nelly was the first of the Fail Girls to die, followed soon after by her sisters, Jenny June and Gerty Fail, in that order. Causes of death were Blunt Object, Disappearance and Consumption, also in that order.” But before each young woman meets her untimely end, she finds love and happiness in this “lovely, bittersweet play” (Philadelphia Inquirer), in which “Dawkins approaches death with a quiet strength and gentle humor” (Chicago Now).

FAILURE: A LOVE STORY, which received its world premiere in 2012 at Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre, is a magical, musical fable “full of emotional riches” (The Chicago Tribune) that traces the sisters’ triumphs and defeats, lived out in the rickety two-story building by the Chicago River that was the Fail family home and clock shop. This funny, moving and profoundly wise play reminds us that in the end, all that remains is love.

Director and NKU professor Corrie Danieley first learned of FAILURE when a friend from the Illinois Shakespeare Festival sent her the script. Danieley knew immediately why Illinois Shakes included it in their 2013 summer season. “The language has a fantastic rhythm to it… full of fun and quirky words. The show is epic and the themes are timeless: love, heartbreak, death, and the passage of time.” – all qualities that Danieley associated with the works of Shakespeare.

Danieley says the genre is magical realism “There are talking animals, talking clocks, time passes quickly and sometimes slowly, there is a memory scene that takes us back in time, and a chorus that speaks the narrative.” She likens the show to the movie Big Fish and the play Our Town; “Part fantastical, part real, part memory, part present – both tell epic stories that deal with matters of the heart.”

The play is music directed by NKU student Jacob Priddy, who has worked to find songs from the era of the play — 1920s Chicago — that support the atmosphere and help express mood.” A small, on-stage band provides the music: piano, string, percussion, and one velvety alto singer. “It’s a big part of the show,” says Danieley, “the music is not flashy or slick… it has poignant lyrics by Berlin and Porter with accompaniment that has a home-grown feel. [Musical Director Jacob Priddy] also wrote an original tune that is just fantastic.”

Danieley praises her talented cast of NKU students: “They come into rehearsal prepared and willing to think outside of the box. We all – every night – try something new. We take risks; some fail and others fly. To me, this is the magic of theatre… connecting with your partners, communing with our humanity, and choosing to be brave.” She hopes audiences will “try something new, experience a new story, and be open to the magic of theatre.”

NET Benefit: LIGHTS, CAMERA, MURDER on Nov. 15

NET_Lights, Camera, MurderHELP US RAISE SOME FUNDS WITH A MURDER MYSTERY.

Gloria Swansong is coming back to the silver screen. But someone wants to send her to that big screening room in the sky instead! Could it be the spurned lover, the jealous stand-in, or does someone have a dark secret? No more “close-ups” for Miss Swansong! The murder mystery show will be held at The Cabaret at the Below Zero Lounge in the Gateway Quarter (1120 Walnut Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202) on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The event serves as a major fundraiser for New Edgecliff Theatre (NET). Tickets are still available for the one-night only evening, according to Shawn Maus, the theatre’s managing director.

The evening will feature The Whodunit? Players joined by friends of New Edgecliff. Guests may dress in their best red carpet attire or simply come dressed for an evening out, while enjoying beverages from the cash bar at the Cabaret. Maus notes that any donations are tax-deductible.

The event is one of four planned fundraisers hosted by NET this year, although this event is more theatrical in nature.

“From the minute you walk in, the actors will be performing,” Maus says.

He gives a special shout-out to the Below Zero Lounge for hosting the event after it became clear the theatre’s new home space would not be ready in time. “Below Zero and the Whodunit Players graciously stepped forward and opened their space and lent their talents for the event,” Maus says.

“It’s a great night to sit down with some cool people, have terrific drinks, see a show that’s happening all around you, and support NET,” Maus notes.

All money raised will go to the New Edgecliff’s operating fund, Maus says. That fund provides for main stage productions such as the planned local premiere of David Mamet’s “Race” in April.

“It is an investment in our community,” Maus says, “because all these things we do that people love are made possible through support of the operating fund.”

“We wanted to do something different. At NET, we create experiences. This is more than just a fundraiser. This is an evening experience.” Maus says of the murder mystery.
