ETC Presents Family Friendly Holiday Musical SLEEPING BEAUTY, Dec. 3-Jan. 4

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ROSES!
ENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI PRESENTS FAMILY FRIENDLY HOLIDAY MUSICAL
SLEEPING BEAUTY, DECEMBER 3, 2014-JANUARY 4, 2015

ETC_Sleeping Beauty(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) presents the return of one of its most cherished family-friendly holiday musicals SLEEPING BEAUTY, by local playwright Joseph McDonough with music and lyrics by David Kisor, playing December 3, 2014 through January 4, 2015. In the tradition of ETC’s “fractured fairytale” holiday productions, Sleeping Beauty is a modern spin on the classic tale by Charles Perrault. This revamped production features a magical set design, an updated musical score and story, enchanting comedy, and a blooming twist on the meaning of love. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers. Premiere Sponsor is Macy’s.

Romance, comedy, action, rock n’ roll, and opera—this musical version of SLEEPING BEAUTY has it all! Meet Briar Rose, her overprotective parents, three wacky fairies (and a wicked one), and a dragon with an attitude as our contemporary twist on the classic tale returns to Ensemble’s stage. From the creators of Cinderella and Snow White, this enchanted and memorable musical will delight audiences of all ages this holiday season.

Each season, ETC produces a magical fairy tale musical written with families in mind. As a theatre that also seeks to nurture new audiences, ETC has specifically commissioned these shows that take classic fairy tales and give them a fresh, modern spin with contemporary cultural references to make the shows’ message accessible for the next generation of arts patrons.

Following the success of recent holiday musicals, ETC’s performance schedule includes over 30 chances for audiences to see this popular production. ETC will also offer a convenient show calendar for families with many weekend matinees, early 6:00 pm Sunday evening shows, and 7:00 pm evening shows throughout the holiday season. “SLEEPING BEAUTY is a parable about the beauty within and the capacity we all have to change, grow, and make the world better,” says ETC’s Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “This is a very bright, bold, and inventive production that truly embodies the essence of our Ensemble.”

The Drama Workshop Announces 2015-2016 Season

TDW_Exterior(Cheviot, OH) The Drama Workshop, the award-winning community theatre based at The Glenmore Playhouse in Cheviot, is pleased to announce its five-show 2015-2016 season.

TDW will open the 4th season in The Glenmore Playhouse with the classic musical comedy, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”, with book and music by Joe DiPietro and lyrics by Jimmy Roberts, and directed by Linda Abbott. This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship”. The show details the journey from dating and waiting to lovers and marriage, progressing to reveal the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and new-borns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set. This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, “Say, what are you doing Saturday night?” Show dates are September 11 – 27, 2015.

Following will be the gripping murder mystery, “Deathtrap”, by Ira Levin, and directed by Joe Penno. Sidney Bruhl is a down-on-his-luck playwright, struggling to create his next hit play, when he receives a phone call from a student who tells him he has written the perfect suspense play and will bring it to the playwright’s Connecticut home tonight. Will Bruhl, a master at creating the perfect crime on the page, translate his skills to the real world? Audiences will be on the edge of their seats as the suspense builds: will the playwright will kill the student and take credit for his play? In addition to being a Tony-nominated play, “Deathtrap” was also adapted to a motion picture starring Christopher Reeves and Michael Caine. TDW’s production of this audience favorite will run from October 22 through November 8, 2015.

In December, TDW is proud to present the holiday classic “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, by Barbara Robinson, and directed by Ivory Mazur. The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant. None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will have a limited engagement from December 4-13, 2015.

TDW’s Winter 2016 offering will be Paul Slade Smith’s “Unnecessary Farce”, directed by Ray Persing. In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next-door, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes. The plot weaves you through mix-ups and mayhem you won’t believe. This is one funny show you don’t want to miss! Show dates are February 26 through March 13, 2016.

The final show of the 2015-2016 season will be “The Fantasticks”, by Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, and directed by Dennis Murphy. “The Fantasticks” is the world’s longest running musical – running for over

50 years in Manhattan and entrancing generations of audiences the world over. “The Fantasticks” is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall. The audience is invited to use their imagination and follow the story into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in the words that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow”. The famous score, which includes the classics Try To Remember, They Were You and Soon It’s Gonna Rain, is as timeless as the story itself. Please join us for this very special production, running from April 22 through May 8, 2016.

Season tickets will go on sale in March, 2014. If you would like to be added to the TDW mailing list and receive a season brochure, please leave your contact information at the TDW ticket line at 513.598.8303, or by contacting us through our website at www.thedramaworkshop.org.

SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS to Premiere at Northern Kentucky University, Dec. 12-21

New Play Commemorates 100th Anniversary of World War I Christmas Truce

Carter Bratton, Blair Godshall & Patrick McWilliams.

Carter Bratton, Blair Godshall & Patrick McWilliams.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – On Christmas Eve, 1914, two soldiers – one British, the other German – meet by chance as they gather straw to keep warm in their respective trenches along the Western Front. They eye each other with trepidation, but realize their common enemy is the cold.

Thus begins SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS, a new play that commemorates one of the most extraordinary events of World War I, in which soldiers on opposing sides laid down their weapons and celebrated the holiday with each other, exchanging gifts and singing carols. The play, by award-winning playwright Phil Paradis, will premiere December 12-21 at Northern Kentucky University.

“I heard about the Christmas Truce from one of my uncles, when I was a boy,” said Paradis, who began researching the subject more than 10 years ago. “It was an incredible story that stayed with me. These soldiers were sworn enemies, but they stopped killing each other long enough to celebrate Christmas.”

Though inspired by true events, SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS is a fictionalized account of the Christmas Truce. The characters are composites of soldiers’ loved ones and the thousands of troops who took part in the celebration along the Western Front.

SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS was a finalist in the Kentucky Theatre Association Roots of the Bluegrass New Play Contest. He received a 2014 Kentucky New Play Series Award for his play SUNNY SIDE and his play FOOTPRINTS OF THE POLAR BEAR took top honors in New Edgecliff Theatre’s Cincinnati Director’s Competition. Of the dozens of plays he’s written, Paradis considers SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS his most important work.

“In the midst of war, it gradually dawned on British and German soldiers that their similarities were greater than their differences,” he said. “I think that’s what resonates here and why this is such an unforgettable story. ”

A production of Actors & Playwrights Collaborative with New Edgecliff Theatre, SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS is  written by Philip Paradis and directed by Robert Allen. SYNOPSIS
Inspired by the historical Christmas Truce, SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS is an epic tale of war and peace set in Belgium in late December of 1914, dramatizing the Great War’s effects on front‐line soldiers as well as on their families at home. This play with song presents the personal stories of disenchanted, battle‐ weary British and German soldiers who throw down their rifles, leave the mud of the trenches, and join hands in one of history’s most astonishing Christmas celebrations.

THE FIELD COMMANDER
SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS is directed by Robert Allen, an award‐winning actor and director of numerous plays, stage readings, radio recreations, industrial films, and commercials. A teacher at Northern Kentucky University and the Preparatory Department at the University of Cincinnati College‐Conservatory of Music, Allen feels that SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS imparts a vital message that has not lost  significance over the past century.

“This piece tells a story of universal significance,” says Allen. “It’s a timely parable of war and peace dramatizing the choices we all face. SOLDIER’S shows the impact of World War I on the lives of front‐line soldiers and their families on the home‐front. With plenty of heart, humor, and gravitas, it’s a wonderful alternative holiday play for modern audiences‐‐a new Christmas classic.”

FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO THE BOARDS
Playwright Philip Paradis has taken his time perfecting the script of SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS, researching and cultivating it over nine years with readings at Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative, the Clifton Performance Theatre and most recently at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (2014). The play was selected a finalist in the Kentucky Theatre Association Roots of the Bluegrass New Play Contest, one of the latest in a series of writing accolades for Fort Thomas resident Paradis. His play SUNNY SIDE was selected for the Kentucky New Play Series and was staged at the 2014 Kentucky State Fair. Paradis also received an Audience Choice Award for his writing from Point Loma Actors Studio in San Diego, and the premiere of his play FOOTPRINTS OF THE POLAR BEAR took top honors in New Edgecliff Theatre’s Cincinnati  Director’s Competition.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE
Prior to Christmas 1914, after five months of war, there were some peace initiatives. The Open Christmas Letter was a public plea for peace addressed “To the Women of Germany and Austria,” and signed by 101 British women suffragists.  Pope Benedict XV on December 7th asked the heads of state for an official truce, but his proposal was rebuffed.  Subsequently on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, along the Western Front, a series of unofficial truces occurred in “no‐man’s‐land.” German and British  soldiers exchanged seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches. Many war‐weary soldiers from both sides ventured into no‐man’s‐land, where they exchanged tobacco, food and souvenirs. Several meetings involved joint burial ceremonies or carol‐singing. Some troops from both sides even played impromptu soccer matches.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS WITH THE MIGHTY WURLITZER | Thu., Dec. 11 | Music Hall Ballroom

CAA_Happy Holidays with the Mighty WurlitzerCINCINNATI, OH – The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall (SPMH) is pleased to announce the return of HAPPY HOLIDAYS WITH THE MIGHTY WURLITZER to Cincinnati’s Music Hall on Thursday, December 11 at 10:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Now in its fifth year, the popular holiday concert is being presented in cooperation with the Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Organ Society

Tickets are on sale now at www.CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center or Music Hall Ticket Office. For groups of ten or more, call (513) 977-4157.

There’s nothing quite like the unique sound of the Albee Theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer − an orchestra and more all in one organ! Acclaimed theater-organist Mark Herman will perform holiday favorites with all of the bells, whistles, and special effects that only an instrument as grand as the Mighty Wurlitzer can create! Special guest dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy will perform three of the most popular dances from The Nutcracker – “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” “Trepak” (the Russian dance), and “Waltz Of The Flowers.” Relive your memories of yesterday as you create new memories of tomorrow with your friends and family!

“The holidays are always the most joyous time of the year,” said Don Siekmann, President of The Society for the Preservation of Music Hall.  “This season, the talented young dancers from Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy, who will perform some of the world’s most beautiful holiday dances in such an exquisite manner, accompanied by an outstanding theater organist, will certainly add to your holiday spirit!”

The Mighty Wurlitzer
The Mighty Wurlitzer was installed in the ornate Albee Theater on Fountain Square in December 1927 – one of only 2,200 theatre-organs produced at that time to accompany silent feature films.  When talkies took over in 1929, the theatre organ was mainly silenced.  The Albee organ was donated to the Emery Theater in 1969 (where it played for movies and other events) and was partially rebuilt by the Ohio Valley Organ Club. It was removed from the Emery in 1999 and put into storage.

The leadership at SPMH thought the historic Music Hall Ballroom would be an ideal location for the instrument, and in June 2007, Ronald F. Wehmeier, Inc., Pipe Organ Service in Cincinnati was contacted to completely rebuild and install the Wurlitzer. A donor foundation funded the entire project in the amount of $1.41 million.  Only a small number of Wurlitzers of this size still exist, and Cincinnati (the home of the Wurlitzer Company) is one of the few cities in the country to have an instrument of this quality.

The Wurlitzer was expanded in tonal colors and effects, from 19 ranks of pipes to 31 ranks (a rank is made up of 61 pipes, and represents orchestral sounds, such as trumpets, flutes, tubas, strings, etc.).  A full array of percussion effects is also present – xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, chimes, and even a large Steinway grand – all playable from the giant three keyboard and pedal console, decorated in 22-karat gold leaf.  Wind for the pipes is provided by a 15 HP high pressure turbine, the electrical switching is controlled by computer, and pipes range in size from 16 feet to the size of a pencil.  In addition, the Wurlitzer is now fully computerized, so that it can be played without an organist through a digital input system.

Mark Herman
Born in 1987, Mark Herman is one of America’s busiest young theatre organists, performing over 30 concerts and silent film presentations each year across the US and abroad. In July of 2012, he was named the American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year and is the youngest person ever to receive the prestigious honor.

He studied theatre organ with John Ferguson of Indianapolis, who is recognized worldwide for his skills as a teacher. His classical piano studies were with Christine Freeman of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Arts/Management from DePaul University in Chicago. Mark currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is President and Tonal Director of the Los Angeles Organ Company, the Allen Organ dealer for the Greater Los Angeles Area. He is in demand as a voicing specialist and tonal consultant for Allen Organs and is proud to be an Allen Artist, showcasing new Allen Organs in the US and beyond.

For more information, visit Mark’s website at www.markhermanproductions.com.

Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy
Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy, the region’s only pre-professional ballet training program, combines superior instruction, unparalleled performance opportunities, and a strong connection to Cincinnati Ballet.  The talented young dancers from the Academy are in great demand and are performing their interpretation of highlights from the The Nutcracker throughout the Cincinnati area this holiday season.  During Happy Holidays with the Mighty Wurlitzer, they will be performing three of the most popular dances in The Nutcracker –“Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” “Trepak” (the Russian dance) and “Waltz Of The Flowers.”

CCM’s SPEECH AND DEBATE Earns 4.5 Star LCT Rating

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music Drama Department’s SPEECH AND DEBATE with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Written by Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Stephen Karam, SPEECH AND DEBATE feels ripped from today’s headlines. What begins as a story of on-line stalking quickly snowballs into a play that is part mystery, part coming-of-age story; a smart comedy and an insightful reflection of what it means to be young in America today.

Panelists called SPEECH AND DEBATE “a wonderful production…contemporary, real, and sometimes raw.” They were unanimous in praising Richard Hess’s direction: “tight and economical, allowing his actors to bond together in their awkwardness while slowly revealing their secrets.” The ensemble in the show “couldn’t be better…they worked marvelously together as a seamless unit”. Panelists singled out actress Katie Langham’s performance as Diwata: “brilliant, quick-delivery, comic in the truest sense”.

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.
