2011 Fringe Adventure: Day One

Promotional images for CURRICULUM VITAE, THE GOD BLOG and WHITE GIRL.

For those of you wondering what exactly IS the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, you can read the official version here. I like to describe it this way: Remember those neighborhood kids who used to put on shows in their garage? Well it’s kind of like that except they are all grown up and geez do alot of them have issues.

sO, In trying to tackle the monster that is the 2011 Cincinnati Fringe Festival, I went through the descriptions of all 30 productions and divided them into three categories: those I really wanted to see, those that sounded interesting, and the remaining performances that I would catch if I could.

Armed with those three categories and my 2011 Fringe Grid,  (available here in .pdf) I laid out my attendance schedule to make as many shows as early in their runs as possible.

For Day 1, Wednesday, June 1st, I’ll be attending:

  • 7pm at 1423 Vine
    CURRICULUM VITAE from Jimmy Hogg
It’s a show about my introduction into the working world at a very young age and consequent period of underemployment, moving from one awful experience to the next. It’s also a users guide as to how to get a job. It’s really the show where I made my mark on the Fringe scene by establishing a style that was very physically detailed, exceptionally fast-paced and packed with details, descriptions, segues and anecdotes leaving the audience little time to breathe until the curtain comes down.

Unfortunately I missed Jimmy’s A BRIEF HISTORY OF PETTY CRIME during last year’s Fringe Festival, (well truthfully I missed the entire festival), but I thought I might enjoy someone else’s comic take on unemployment, because living it, no so funny.

  • 8:15pm at the Art Academy of Cincinnati
THE GOD BLOG from What If Play Shop Players
Yo, Fringe Fans! The Big Guy here, asking you to come see me and my friends from Celestial Services in THE GOD BLOG, a radio soap opera which asks the musical questions, “Can a burned out, demographically irrelevant deity find happiness in this crazy world he created AND stop Granola Guy Lucifer from confiscating his donuts at the staff meeting?” See for yourself why I need a new gig. Hey, remember that bike you got on your seventh birthday? I’m not trying to lay guilt trips on anyone…just sayin’ the Big Guy would appreciate a little love. Thanks!

OK, so I’m a sucker for the religious-themed Fringe shows. I think the reason can be traced back to a college Religious Philosophy class that was constantly interrupted by a fellow student brandishing his Bible. The point of the class, to me, was to learn what other major religions of the world believed. He however took it as an opportunity to declare each of those beliefs as incorrect because “The Bible says…” It was a LONG semester.

  • 9:15pm at ArtWorks
    WHITE GIRL from Maythinee Washington
What is beauty? What is race? How do we see ourselves and determine our identity? WHITE GIRL is an original solo show employing found text & sound with movement and pantomime telling a story of a girl exploring these questions. At times comic and poignant, the artist draws from her personal history and plays with pop culture to create a work that continues to be thought-provoking long after it has ended.

Full disclosure, the only show available to me after THE GOD BLOG on Monday night is WHITE GIRL. With no gap between the ending of TGB and the beginning of WG, it’s a block and a half mad dash to the final venue. There is no performance after WG, so holding for five minutes wouldn’t throw the scheduling off (hint, hint).

Just like you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a fringe show on description alone. Part of the fun is taking a chance on something and finding a hidden gem.

With the way the Fringe is structured you can enjoy dinner after work, see a show or two, and be home in time for the 11 o’clock news. If you are passing near downtown Cincinnati/Over-the-Rhine over the weekend, leave a few hours early and catch a performance.

If you purchase a voyeur pass, you can see six shows for the price of five.

BTW, if you are interested in my opinion of what I find, be sure to visit this blog on Thursday for my reviews.

Press Release: Pones Inc. takes Collaboration to the Next Level at 2011 Cincy Fringe

THE BODY SPEAKS: MOVEMENT

Cincinnati, OH – Pones Inc.’s fourth consecutive original Cincy Fringe Festival premiere, The Body Speaks: Movement includes collaborations like never before. Three artistic collectives: Pones Inc., Performance Gallery and Golden Brown Enterpizes each create works inspired by local artist, Sean Dunn’s calliagraphic photography exhibition and the shared title, The Body Speaks. Each company has chosen a specific medium to create in (dance for Pones Inc. in The Body Speaks: Movement, theatre for Performance Gallery in The Body Speaks: Scripted and film for Golden Brown in The Body Speaks: Captured). With Dunn’s exhibition on display before and after each performance, audiences can enjoy four artistic experiences that are uniquely connected and located in one convenient Cincy Fringe venue at 1411 Vine Street in Over the Rhine.

The Body Speaks: Movement is Pones Inc.’s most dance-focused and emotionally-charged project to date. The company responds to Dunn’s photography by focusing on the traditions, spirit and pulse of Japanese culture. Using its signature style of pedestrian-influenced movement the company also explores precision in an almost ceremonial and meditative way with an emphasis on shape, exposure and subtlety. Additionally inspired by the images’ themes of distortion, sensuality and exposure. Pones Inc. explores our relationships to our bodies and how we use them to communicate. If your body could speak, what would it say?

“Audiences have been asking to see more dance from Pones Inc. since That One Show: A Live Documentary of Dance! premiered at last year’s Cincy Fringe Festival, and we are excited to step up to the challenge and get back to our roots,” said Pones Inc. Co-Founder and Director, Kim Popa.

Even more collaboration occurred when Pones Inc. invited seven local composers to create music inspired by one of the photos in Dunn’s exhibition. “The music really helped outline a structure for the show. Seven distinct dances with varying cast members quickly emerged during the first week of rehearsal,” said Pones Inc. Co-Founder and Director Lindsey Jones.

“We wanted each dance to draw deeply from a different aspect or tradition of Japanese culture, and we were fascinated by the research, conversations and discoveries that evolved,” Popa added. Musicians include: Cary Davenport, Leif Fairfield, Ian Gullet, Isaac Hand and Molly Sullivan, Eddy Kwon, Triangle, and Turmeric.

Pones Inc. engages the cast and the community in the creative process through a series of True Body Project-conducted workshops, public space performances and volunteer efforts that benefit topics explored in the show. Community engagement includes Japan relief efforts and the Take Back the Night March, inviting artists and audience members alike to get involved and expand their impact. Pones Inc. strives to raise $1500 for Japan Relief during the Fringe Festival.

Audiences can donate today at Global Giving.

For $12 tickets visit www.cincyfringe.com or call 513-30-KNOW. Performances of The Body Speaks: Movement are held at 1411 Vine Street on:

  • Thursday, June 2nd at 7:15 P.M.
  • Friday, June 3rd at 7 P.M.
  • Sunday, June 5th at 9 P.M.
  • Wednesday, June 8th at 8:30 P.M.
  • Saturday, June 11th at 7 P.M.

Updated: Fringe Schedule Grid R3

I’ve taken the performance schedule each day and created a spreadsheet grid to figure out my attendance. I thought some of you out there might find it useful, so I cleaned it up for posting.

Click this link to download my 2011FringeR3 .pdf file. (Updated 6/6 at 11:45pm.)

Revision 3:

  • The Thursday, June 9th performance of TRANSFRINGEMENT: CIRCUS MOJO has been cancelled. The final performance is Saturday, June 11th at 2:30pm.
  • I’ve also deleted past dates, so this .pdf only has the schedule from Tuesday-Saturday.

Revision 2:

  • Updated performance duration for all performances of TO AND FRO AND UP AND DOWN.

Revision 1:

  • June 5th performance of TALK TO THE HAND has been added back to the schedule.
  • For all performances, the performance number has been added. For example a 1/5 indicates the first of five performances. 4/4 indicates the last of four performances.

A few things to be aware of:

  • This is NOT an official Fringe document. I created it from the Fringe website information, which is subject to change. I will do my best to keep it accurate as changes are announced.
  • Speaking of changes, two one performance at the SCPA Blackbox have been cancelled on June 5th. I left the blocks but blacked out the information.
  • If a show runs over a 15 minute block, I added another block to it. So a show that runs 60 minutes is four blocks “tall” and a show that runs 65-75 minutes is five blocks “tall”, etc. Keep an eye on durations when you are considering attending performances at different venues back to back.
  • Boxes with dark grey shading are single stand alone events. The exception to this is the two performances of THE BODY SPEAKS: CAPTURED, which is the film portion of THE BODY SPEAKS trilogy.
  • Hopefully I’ve correctly formatted everything to correctly print. I have combined some weekdays to save a few trees. Please note that June 3 and June 6 are on the same page.
  • Check back to this blog entry as I’ll post revisions to the document as I make them.
Enjoy and happy Fringe-ing.
