Costume Coordinator Needed for Mason High School Theater Department

For Fall, Winter, and Spring Productions

MD_logoThe Mason High School Theater Department is looking for a Costume Coordinator for all three of our productions next year. If you enjoy working with high school students full of enthusiasm with varying levels of skills and experience, working in wonderful facilities, and are yearning to become part of a dedicated and hardworking team of theater teachers, this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

In this role, you’ll be working after school supervising students designing, building, overseeing rentals, and making alterations of the costumes for each of our productions.  You will need to work closely with the production team to plan budgets, supervise student crews, and keep costumes in good repair and clean. During the week of the show, you will help supervise costume running crew, hair and make-up crews, and help provide backstage supervision.  After each show, you will be responsible for returning rentals, removing alterations, and making sure costumes are clean before being returned or placed in our stock.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Planning and Materials Ordering

  • Work with directors and to cost out materials for costume construction and rentals
  • Order materials needed
  • Be involved in the production planning process.
  • Check with local costume rental shops or stores

Costume Construction

  • Train students on how to operate costume shop materials safely
  • Supervise students during the construction process 3 or 4 days a week after school.
  • Ensure that costume shop is clean, organized, and equipment is maintained.

Technical and Dress Rehearsals

  • Attend all dress and technical rehearsals, working with costume running crew and hair and make-up crew to ensure a safe and productive rehearsal.
  • Help provide adult supervision backstage and in the green room.

Performances

  • Attend all performances, helping provide adult supervision for the backstage areas and overseeing costume and hair and make-up crews.

Strike

  • Attend strike, helping provide adult supervision of striking the costumes for the show.
  • Clean costumes pieces, reverse alterations as needed, and return costumes to stock or the various rental houses.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • How to design and create appropriate costumes for a variety of productions.
  • How to create costumes.
  • The various local costume resources.
  • Hair and make-up techniques.
  • How to use and instruct students on the safe use of the following tools:
    • Sewing Machines
    • Sergers
    • Hand sewing techniques
    • Theater running crew responsibilities and etiquette.
  • How to teach young people about the craft and art of producing live theater.
  • The ability to keep on schedule and prioritize tasks.

WHAT EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION YOU SHOULD HAVE BEFORE APPLYING:
The candidate should have practical costuming experience as well as knowledge of generally accepted safety procedures. Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude are important as you’ll be working with students and theater faculty. Preference will be given to candidates with professional or collegiate experience.

These are supplemental positions.  Pay for each is as follows:

Technical Director, Fall Production: $2791

Technical Director, Winter Production:  $2791

Technical Director, Spring Musical:  $3650

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (Full-Time)

  • TCT MainStage at the Taft Theatre – We welcome 107,000 children, teachers, and family members from across the Tri-State, to one of our four family-friendly and professional musical theatre productions at the historic Taft.
  • TCT On Tour – We see over 66,000 children and their families at one of our touring performances or during an arts-integration workshop or residency.
  • TCT Academy – Over 600 children will be provided fine arts instruction, including the group that participates in the four-week intensive summer NKU STAR Intensive where we offer professional musical theatre training to some of the region’s most talented youth.

Position Overview:

The ideal Technical Director (TD) is a skilled theater professional that is highly knowledgeable in all aspects of scenic construction, is familiar with lighting, sound, and AV, and will effectively navigate the complexities of a multifaceted work environment with an ambitious production calendar.

The Technical Director is responsible for overseeing all technical/scenic operations of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s productions, including lighting, sound, props, set design and construction.

The Technical Director maintains technical spaces and equipment and develops and enforces practices that ensure safe, efficient, and effective operation of the scenic operations of The Showtime Stage, The Scene Shop(s) and the Taft Theatre. The role directly supports the success of the scenic operations for 4 MainStage productions and 4-5 touring productions per year.  The Technical Director reports to the Managing Director & CEO, and works alongside the Producing Artistic Director and in conjunction with the Production Stage Manager. The Technical Director assists in identifying and prioritizing needs and initiatives, finding creative solutions to achieve goals while conserving resources.   

Responsibilities:

  • Safeguard and schedule maintenance of all technical assets of Showtime Stage facilities, including lighting, sound and communications equipment.
  • Determine technical needs for MainStage, Showtime Stage and touring productions – technical specifications, schedules, budget and assisting in determining IASTE crew sizes. Order and obtain materials and manage scenic design budgets. Coordinate the stage and equipment logistics; including the loading and unloading of trucks with crew. Work with the carpenters and designers to determine build and maintenance schedules. Hire and supervise over-hire technicians.
  • Approve designs with regard to safety, compatibility, feasibility, budget, and scheduling considerations. Create technical drawings and plans, either by hand or by CAD, and oversee and build scenery. Coordinate transportation of scenery to and from the theaters, coordinate the load-ins/strike and storage all sets, props, TCT’s lighting and sound equipment after the end of the shows.
  • Advise the members of the production team on technical aspects of each theatrical project.
  • Supervise and assist in the technical aspects of all shows, establish technical schedules for all productions; attend technical rehearsals. Ensure safety.
  • Maintain technical spaces and equipment in the shops and theater spaces; monitor the condition of equipment and perform preventive maintenance; inspect equipment on a regular basis; develop a replacement and upgrade schedule for tools and equipment and arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints. Work with the Operations Manager to orient facility users to the safety, technical elements and other areas of the facility’s operations.  Create and maintain inventories of technical supplies and equipment. Oversee the process of checking scenic elements in and out for rentals.
  • Develop and enforce practices that ensure safe, efficient and effective operations of all theater facilities and the Scene Shop.
  • Make recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.

Knowledge/Skills:                                                                          

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Direction with experience in a professional or educational environment. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and career experience in the field, but without a formal degree, will also be considered. Touring experience as a Technical Director is preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; appropriate safety precautions and procedures, and ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances.
  • Working closely with an experienced, tight knit, passionate, and dedicated staff, including artists and I.A.T.S.E. union members.
  • Working knowledge of PC and Mac based productivity software, as well as functional familiarity with industry standard theatrical software, such as AUTOCAD or equivalent, and able to learn other software as needed.
  • Prior supervisory experience of a team in a dynamic environment and in management of direct reports.
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills, both written and oral. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with various groups.
  • Ability to retain good humor and composure in stressful situations.
  • Valid Driver’s License required. Experience operating box trucks preferred.
  • Able to lift, push or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools and/or a work partner. Must be able to stoop, stand, safely climb stairs and ladders, and be comfortable using Genie lifts to assist with reaching heights.
  • Able to maintain a flexible work schedule, which may include irregular and extended working hours. 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary range: $40,000 – $60,000
  • Health, vision and dental benefits available, partially subsidized by employer contributions, after a waiting period
  • 403(b) retirement plan participation available, after a waiting period, with eligibility for an employer match after one year of credited service

Casting Call for Strong Brothers Films 2018 Entry in the 48 FILM PROJECT

Open Call to All Cincinnati Actors!

We are Strong Brothers Films and have a team participating in the Cincinnati 48 Hour Film Project (http://www.48hourfilm.com/cincinnati-oh). Want to have some fun?

The project contest runs from June 2nd—3rd, 2018. Teams pull 1 of 30 genres, Comedy, Drama, Horror, etc. from a hat at 6:00 pm EDT Friday June 1st and must turn in a 7-minute film by 6:00 pm EDT Sunday June 3rd. We plan on all filming occurring Saturday June 2nd, 2018.

We had a wonderful time with all of the actors we met on Behind The Curtain who participated in the 2017 48 Hr. Film Project with us.

  • **Actors cannot be paid per contest rules**
  • The shoot will be catered and have water/pop, etc. all day.
  • We are professionals and want to have a fun, productive experience.
  • This project is highly visible with a movie theater screening before an audience of hundreds of local people, including other local filmmakers who may want you for projects after the contest.
  • Many films end up on Youtube, etc.
  • There is a chance to win state, nationals, etc. which improves your visibility as an actor
  • We do not know what genre we will draw
  • So we don’t know what the location is other than in the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
  • We currently don’t know what the role is but there will not be anything untoward such as nudity, excessive expletives, general weirdness (e.g., not a Tarantino movie).
  • You DO NOT need to be a professional actor, just have acting experience even if it is just schooling.
  • You MUST be available all day and evening Saturday June 2nd, 2018.
  • Even if you have availability and commit you MAY NOT BE SELECTED based upon the genre we draw (e.g., a coming of age movie with teens can’t have too many middle-aged people). You may still be able to participate in other ways if you like.
  • DVDs of the finished 7 minute film are available upon request.

Job Title: Costume Technician/Shop Assistant

Reports to: Costume Shop Manager

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Costume construction.
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of costume stock, shop equipment, and inventory.
  • Aid the Cutter/Draper and First Hand (cutting, truing alteration markings, assist in fittings when needed).

Competencies include:

  • Minimum of three years professional experience in a similar position (preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fabric preparation.
  • Ability to cut basic patterns from fabric.
  • Truing of alteration markings.
  • Minor machine maintenance (rethreading, cleaning, and minor parts replacement).
  • Simple patterning (from existing garments, for simple shapes, or resizing from existing patterns).
  • Basic time management.
  • Execute fitting notes independently.
  • Basic computer skills required, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and email.
  • Familiarity with domestic cover stitch machine, preferred but not required.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The position also requires the ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, and climb a ladder. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This is a full-time seasonal hourly position. Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid time off, and 401k and 403b pension plans. Position begins mid- late July 2018.
