Auditions Announced for THE GAME’S AFOOT at St. Paul Players

Summary:
It is December 1936. And Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in the isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. It is then up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays.

Note: In the show there will be gunshots, on stage fight scenes, and stage kissing.

Characters:

  • William Gillette/Sherlock (30’s–50) Male. A dynamic and charming stage actor. Has made a fortune from his stage adaptation of Sherlock Holmes whom he also plays. Transatlantic accent or high British accent a plus, but will not be used continuously-helps to drag and prop a “body”-collapses onstage.
  • Felix Geisel/Moriarty (30’s–45) Felix is histrionic (overly dramatic), a true theatrical who has given his life to the stage. Felix is Gillette’s best friend and occasional sidekick. Married to Madge. Jumps out a window-gets slapped-drags and props “body” with and without help
  • Simon Bright/Zerlinksy (20’s-30’s) The “mangenue” of the company, Simon is an enthusiastic young man, eager to please and find success. A bit of a naïf, Simon can occasionally be overly sensitive. Recently married to Aggie. Ability to play an instrument (ukulele in script, but can be changed) a plus, but not required-fights onstage and gets “knocked out”
  • Inspector Harriet Goring (40’s) English and eccentric, completely one of a kind. By turns, witty and incisive, suddenly lost and dim, she is disarming in her inability to be defined. Always off the mark, and yet never far from the truth, somehow, she always gets her man.
  • Martha Gillette (60+) Gillette’s dotty mother, elegant though a bit foggy, Martha never shies away from a fight. Always willing to lob a criticism when necessary, all the same, Martha is loyal to Gillette and his gang of theatrical misfits.
  • Madge Geisel/Marian (30’s-40’s) Wry and outspoken, Madge, like her husband Felix, is a lifelong theatrical. She is game for anything, but back her into a corner and she will come out swinging.
  • Aggie Wheeler/Alice (20’s-30’s) Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, Aggie is the ingénue of the company. Good-natured and kind, Aggie has had tragedy in her past, though she seems to have dealt with it well, and even moved on. Recently married to Simon. Fights onstage
  • Daria Chase (30’s-50’s) Glamorous & gorgeous, Daria is the theatre critic we all love to hate. Biting, bitchy, and utterly charming, you can’t help but like Daria, despite the terrible things she says and writes. Daria Chase gets “killed”, acts as body that gets dragged and propped.

Performance Dates: Oct. 1-10

Cast Requirements: (must be able to play “about” the age range, not necessarily be in age range).  All roles open to all ethnicities.

  • Sylvia (lead, 20-40) – a dog played by a woman. Good comedic timing and physical comedy skills necessary. Flexibility and mobility essential.
  • Greg (lead 40-60) – highly likeable married man befuddled by the classic mid life crisis (mostly about work) who impulsively adopts and falls in love with a stray dog.  Married to Kate
  • Kate (lead 40-60) – middle-aged college academic (Shakespeare scholar) with her kids finally out of the house, is excited and ready to finally be able to focus on her marriage and her own career. Married to Greg
  • The following supporting roles were originally designed to be played by one actor.  The director prefers not to double/triple cast but keeps this as an option.  Age ranges 25-40s for all
  • Tom – a man in the dog park who dispenses some common sense advice
  • Leslie – an androgynous (and possibly bi polar) psychiatrist who lets the clients choose his/her gender during their sessions, comic relief character
  • Phyllis – a hotshot Manhattanite, Kate’s friend from college, prone to drama and drinking

The Story:
Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

Auditions Announed for THE ODD COUPLE Female Version at the Footlighters, Inc.

FLI_logoThe Footlighters, Inc. is proud to announce auditions for our first show of the season, Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple, Female Version.

Show dates: September 30- October 16, 2021

The director is looking for an ethnically diverse cast. The setting is in New York City and the cast needs to reflect the diversity of a large city.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script.

Auditions will be on Sunday, July 11 from 2:00 – 5:00pm and on Monday, July 12 from 6:00 – 9:00pm at The Stained Glass Theatre: 802 York Street Newport, KY 41071.

Call-backs, if needed, will be on Wednesday, July 14 from 7:00 – 9:00pm.

SYNOPSIS
Neil Simon’s revision of his hugely successful play, The Odd Couple, sees the lead characters transformed into Olive Madison and Florence Unger. Olive and their group of girlfriends are enjoying their weekly Trivial Pursuit night in Olive’s messy and ill-equipped apartment. As the game continues, Florence arrives, fresh from being dumped by her husband. Fearful that the neurotic Florence might try to harm herself, Olive invites her to move in as her roommate. However, Olive and Florence have VERY different personalities. Where Olive is messy, untidy, and unconcerned about the state of her apartment, Florence is obsessively clean, tidy, and obsessed with hygiene. Olive’s easy-going outlook on life soon clashes with Florence’s highly-strung neurotic tendencies, testing their friendship to the limit. When Olive organizes a double-date with the Costazuela brothers, their differences come to a head and sparks fly.

Female roles are open to all ethnicities. The Costazuela Brothers should be Hispanic.
ROLES (6 F, 2 M)

Olive Madison (Lead): Female, stage age 35-50+
Attractive, divorced, a successful television producer; vibrant, active, quick-witted, big-hearted, with an encyclopedic understanding of sports, but also relentlessly sloppy and careless when it comes to the routine concerns of her personal life. She is very much at home in running shorts and a t-shirt, and still looks smashing in a cocktail dress. The female counterpart to the original play’s Oscar Madison. She is a woman seriously in need of order in her life.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Florence Unger (Lead): Female, stage age 35-50+
Attractive, a homemaker/housewife and very recently separated from her husband, was a bookkeeper before she married, extremely “pulled together” (obsessively so), pathologically organized and neat, even sanitizes the telephone cord. Her personality is the complete antithesis of Olive’s personality. The female counterpart to the original play’s Felix Unger. A woman who badly needs to cut loose, give it up, take a risk.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities.

Mickey (Supporting): Female, stage age 35-50
A New York City policewoman and an organizer and problem solver. She  is down-to-earth, plain-talking, and has a good understanding of people; she tries very hard to be in control of all situations.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Vera (Supporting): Female, stage age 25-50
A bit literal-minded and a bit slow to get a point that everyone else gets instantly, always seems “a few beats behind the conductor”. She is  very sweet, very nice, somewhat spacey. She’s very funny but doesn’t realize it.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Sylvie (Supporting): Female, stage age 25-50
Highly energized and a wise-cracker. She is desperately trying to stop smoking, and so sucks on lollipops or chews gum; she can get irritated with her friends, but has a good sense of humor, especially about her husband; and, yes, she is pregnant in the last scene.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Renee (Supporting): stage age Female, 25-50
A wisecracker and a bit of a complainer as well. She is Sylvie’s best friend, can be very plain-spoken, especially when she points out Olive’s failings as a hostess–and then Flo’s; she is single and dating a doctor.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Manolo & Jesus Costazuela (Supporting): Male, stage age 30-42
Brothers, both flight attendants for Iberia Airlines, elegant, well-mannered and extremely polite, meticulously well dressed, good-natured, good laughers, with engaging personalities, both speak with faultless Castilian Spanish accents. Manolo may be a year or two older than Jesus. Jesus may be a little less skilled with English than is his brother. Both are very classy gentlemen. They must have good comic timing, as they get very emotional; they are sensitive and appreciate Florence’s sensitivity.

Auditions Announced for SHOUT! The Mod Musical at Cincinnati Music Theatre

CMT_logoCincinnati Music Theatre is proud to announce auditions for SHOUT! THE MOD MUSICAL.

With its irresistible blend of hip-swiveling hits, eye-popping fashions and outrageous dance moves, SHOUT! The Mod Musical takes audiences back to the music, style and freedom of the 1960s. SHOUT! has terrific new arrangements of such classic tunes as “To Sir with Love,” “Downtown,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Goldfinger”. The revue follows five groovy gals as they come of age during those glorious days that made England swing. Traveling in time from 1960 to 1970, SHOUT! chronicles the dawning liberation of women, from the rise of Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark and Cilla Black as independent women with major careers, to their American counterparts, redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about gender.

Auditions are by appointment on Sunday, July 11th from 3-6pm & Monday, July 12th from 7-10pm.
Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, July 14th from 7-9pm.

At Clifton United Methodist Church, 3416 Clifton Ave, Cincinnati OH 45220

Each day’s music and dance auditions will be conducted in groups on the hour. It is important that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the audition time and be prepared to stay for the entire 60 minutes. An accompanist will be provided (no CD’s, tapes or a cappella numbers). The dance audition will be movements reminiscent of the 60s. Walk-ins are welcome, but you may need to wait for the next available slot.

Please bring to the audition:

  • Sheet music in the proper key with cuts marked: 32 bars of two 1960’s style pop songs: one uptempo and one ballad that showcase your vocal range. Songs from the musical can be sung.
  • A copy of your resume and headshot.
  • Your COVID vaccination card (All auditionees are required to show their vaccination card.)

Rehearsals will begin immediately following the auditions and continue until the show opens.
SHOUT! The Mod Musical runs September 3-11 in the Fifth Third Theatre at the Aronoff Center for the Arts.

  • Green Girl: A good-time girl. Blousy, middle-class, and zany. She is a bit frayed at the edges, and hopelessly single. A comedian of sorts. Vocal Range Top: F5; Vocal range bottom: F3
  • Orange Girl: The “mother” of the group. Domestic and maternal, she is wise, soulful, and mature. Slowly asserting her new-found independence. Vocal Range Top: B5; Vocal range bottom: F3
  • Red Girl: The “baby” of the group, she is an exciting blend of youthful contradictions. Quirky, enthusiastic, and naïve. A hopeless romantic who is insecure about her looks. Vocal Range Top: G5; Vocal range bottom: F3
  • Yellow Girl: A loud, uninhibited American girl driven by her emotions. She is a ray of sunshine with a surprising vulnerability. Possesses a big, rock diva belt. Vocal Range Top: E5; Vocal range bottom: F3

Auditions Announced for ELF the Musical at the Covedale Center

Elf the Musical

This hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

  • Buddy: The perfect elf! He’s good-natured, he means well, and he’s happy all the time. There’s only one problem. He’s not an elf-he’s an adult human. Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: B3
  • Charlie: In charge of monitoring the other Elves, making sure every present is wrapped and every bow is tied. Shawanda: A dependable and caring elf. She will do whatever she can to help out others, including Buddy, even though she accidentally reveals that he is a human.
  • Walter Hobbs: Buddy’s real father, is so focused on keeping his job that he is not making time for his family. He can be stern and unemotional at times, but ultimately he learns to recommit to his family. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: B3
  • Sam: One of Walter’s Office Staff who is in a bind at the top of the show.
  • Deb: Walter’s secretary who has the big responsibility of keeping her boss and the whole office happy. She does this by sharing her positive attitude with everyone.
  • Emily Hobbs: Walter’s devoted wife who would prefer her husband to spend a little more time at home. She is a problem solver and an excellent mother who is doing everything she can to provide a positive family dynamic. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: G3
  • Michael Hobbs: The smarter-than-average 12-year-old son of Walter and Emily. He quickly befriends his new adult brother, Buddy, and does everything he can to make sure Buddy becomes a permanent part of the family. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: G3
  • Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin: On the scene in Central Park and are convinced of Santa’s magic after Buddy reveals their past Christmas gifts.
  • Santa Claus: Has a lot on his plate during the Christmas season, and it is starting to show. He is annoyed with the Elves, tired of lying to Buddy and sad that people seem to be losing their Christmas spirit. He is still the same jolly old St. Nick underneath it all, but the job is getting to him. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Ensemble and Featured:

  • Elves: Santa’s special helpers who love their job making toys to meet their Christmas Eve deadline.
  • Security Guards: A stern duo from Walter’s office, making sure everyone who enters has permission.
  • Saleswoman: The first person to greet Buddy as he enters Macy’s. She’s the consummate sales person: smiling, overfriendly, and always trying to sell something.
  • Manager: The manager of Macy’s, he’s doing everything he can to make sure all the employees stay in line.
  • Jovie: Works as a store elf at Macy’s, but don’t be mistaken, she doesn’t quite exude the Christmas spirit. She’s kind of cynical, a bit tough around the edges, and now the target of Buddy’s complete adoration. Vocal range top: Db5, Vocal range bottom: G3
  • Santa’s Helper: Works as a Macy’s Employee and announces when each kid gets to visit with Santa.
  • Fake Santa: A poor replacement for the real Santa. He is an employee of Macy’s who is a bit rough around the edges. Fake Santa is a little over-the-top.
  • Policemen: Are a friendly pair of cops who return Buddy to the Hobbs household. Sarah: A staff member at Walter’s office.
  • Mr. Greenway: One of the crankiest businessmen around. He is the big boss. Chadwick and Matthews: Staff members at Walter’s office who are doing everything they can think of to save the day and make their boss happy.
  • Charlotte Dennon: A TV reporter with a big personality. She does her best to keep her professional persona in public and doesn’t like being shown up.
  • Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin: On the scene in Central Park and are convinced of Santa’s magic after Buddy reveals their past Christmas gifts.
  • Ensemble: New Yorkers, Comforting New Yorker, Macy’s Employees, Macy’s Employee #1, Members of the Rockefeller Crowd, Office Staff, Business Woman, Flyer Guys, Teenager, Jogger, Carolers, Passerby, Children and Parents creating the distinct worlds of the North Pole and New York City.
