Entry Level Carpenter Needed at La Comedia Dinner Theatre

LAC_logoLa Comedia’s Set Designer/Master Carpenter, Ivory Mazur, is seeking an entry level carpenter to complete his team. This entry-level position in live production works within the scenic department and is vital to the efficient operation of the scene shop and to building of sets during pre-production. It pays $12/hr.  Applicant must have reliable transportation.

Duties
The carpenter’s assistant answers directly to the master carpenter and is under the supervision of the production manager. The responsibilities of the assistant include moving and storing of construction materials within the shop or on location and the general cleanliness of the facility. Typical tasks may include sweeping the shop, organizing the shop areas, cleaning tools, building set pieces along with the scenic carpenter and master carpenter, painting, and generally ensuring a safe working environment by keeping workspaces clear of obstructions or a buildup of sawdust that may pose a fire hazard. This person will also perform additional tasks as delegated by carpenters or other department crew. He or she is to adhere to all procedures established by the department head and may be required to wear a minimum of personal protection equipment and operate hand tools while on the job site.

Skills & Education
Employment as a carpenter’s assistant requires only a high school diploma, but advancement within the scenic department will require an advanced education. Training in stagecraft is most important to this career field and involves learning the construction techniques commonly used in entertainment production as well as the use of shop tools and construction materials. Additional courses in art history, drawing, sculpting, and computer drafting are valuable, but not required.

What to Expect
The role of the carpenter’s assistant is full-time (40 hours a week) at the scenic shop at La Comedia in Springboro, Ohio. Typical hours are from 830am – 530pm Monday – Friday. 2 weeks prior to each show opening up your schedule will switch to nights, but only for those 2 weeks. This happens 7 times a year and is to help prep the incoming show for a smooth “change out” with the outgoing show. This is not a glamorous job, but it is the standard entry-level gig for those looking to learn the trade of stagecraft and advance to the role of scenic carpenter. Consider this an apprenticeship that allows you the opportunity to seek mentorship under industry veterans in your chosen craft. Dedication and hard work displayed in the menial tasks of the assistant will prove to your employer that you have the necessary passion and drive to succeed at the next level on the crew. When you’re on the job, never complain; those whom you work for expect you to treat the job as a privilege and appreciate every trashcan you empty. It is all part of paying your dues. Never wait to be asked to help. The more proactive you are and the less supervision you require, the more trusted you would be to take on more responsibility.

OF MONSTER DESCENT Review (GYTN)

CFF18_Of Monster Descent

OF MONSTER DESCENT presented by Queen City Flash as part of the 2018 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

GYTN = Get You Tickets Now. Go ahead, follow the link, the review will still be here after you get back.

Writer/Director team Trey Tatum and Bridget Leak (“Slut Shaming” 2014 Artist Pick of the Fringe, “The Disappearance of Nicole Jacobs”) present a story about a family on the brink of collapse and the woodland beast that stalks just beyond their fence line. Set in a decaying Gulf Coast oasis, a young boy confronts family legacy and the untamed beyond in this otherworldly, lightning-lit, monster survival tale.

Sometimes the most successful solo shows at the Fringe are rooted in the performer’s personal history. When an artist takes the leap and exposes their vulnerability, the result can be amazing. Such is the case with OF MONSTER DECENT.

Trey Tatum.

The script by Trey Tatum is extremely well-written. Pop culture and childhood experiences of family life in Alabama combine in an engaging, thought-provoking, yet genuinely laugh-out-loud funny sixty minutes.

His storytelling and emotional connection to the work is only strengthened by the direction of Bridget Leak. I really enjoy her eye for connecting the words to physical movement in a way that complements the work, without it becoming distracting or overwrought.

The end of the Thursday night performance was greeted with a well-deserved ovation from the sold-out audience.

Five performances remain at the FLC Lounge, one of the smaller Fringe venues:

  • Sat, June 2 at 9pm
  • Sun, June 3 at 7pm
  • Thu, June 7 at 7pm
  • Fri, June 8 at 8:30pm
  • Sat, June 9 at 4:45pm

CFF18: My Fringe Schedule: Day 3

CFF18_The Mountains Did Quake logoFirst up tonight is Animal Engine’s THE MOUNTAINS DID QUAKE, THE HILLSIDE DID TREMBLE. This husband and wife team from Minneapolis, Minnesota have a special place in my Fringy-heart and their 2013 show “Petunia and Chicken” is still one of my all time favorite.

In an authoritarian society where individuality is oppressed in favor of obedience to an all-powerful dictator, the ancient epic of Gilgamesh is told as an act of underground rebellion. From the award-winning creators of “Petunia and Chicken” and “Darlings.”

CFF18_Walt Fit logoI follow that up with WALT FIT, a new offering from returning solo artist Jimmy Grzelak, hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Walt Fit is a self-care-healthcare exercise system for everybody. In 1858, famously lofty poet Walt Whitman released an inspirational self-help health-and-beauty book. It was soon after lost to time. Until now. Reanimate this zombie path to total wellness– attend this seated transformational dance party led by Jimmy Grzelak, “winningly offbeat imagination” (Washington Post) and 2017 Citybeat Critic’s Pick.

“You threw it away. Now pick it up and make something of yourself.

Paul Strickland (“Balls of Yarns” – Critics’ Pick of the Fringe Winner 2017) and Erika Kate MacDonald (“Ice Candle” – Critics’ Pick of the Fringe Winner 2016) team up in this STRANGE-SATIONAL PUPPET MUSICAL COMEDY DELIGHT for adults!

Come help Erika and Paul make a beautiful future out of the discarded past.”

And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.
