Auditions Announced for ARCADIA at Village Players

Monday and Tuesday, July 15 and 16 at 7pm
At 8 N. Fort Thomas Avenue, Fort Thomas, KY 41075 (street level)

This tragicomedy – considered by many to be Stoppard’s finest play – concerns itself with the relationship between past and present, order and chaos, certainty and uncertainty. Set simultaneously in the early 1800s and the present, Arcadia demonstrates that contradictory things can – and often do – co-exist, complemented by Stoppard’s characteristic wit-filled dialogue.

The cast will consist of four women, stage ages 15-40s and eight men, stage ages 16-50s.

Performance dates are October 4-12, 2019

Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Bring resume, known conflicts for the period July 28 through October 20; British dialects will be used in this production (don’t worry, we have the best coach in the city); headshot not necessary but welcome.

Characters of 1800

  • Thomasina Coverly: The daughter of Lord Coverly and Lady Croom, Thomasina is a precocious genius.
  • Septimus Hodge: Thomasina’s tutor, and the academic colleague and friend of Lord Byron.
  • Jellaby: The Crooms’ butler.
  • Ezra Chater: An unsuccessful poetaster staying at Sidley Park.
  • Richard Noakes: Lady Croom’s gardener.
  • Lady Croom: Thomasina’s mother.
  • Captain Brice: The brother of Lady Croom.
  • Augustus Coverly: Thomasina’s trouble-making younger brother.

Characters of the present

  • Hannah Jarvis: The author of a best-seller on Byron’s mistress Lady Caroline Lamb.
  • Chloe Coverly: The 18-year-old daughter of the modern Lady Croom.
  • Bernard Nightingale: A don at a modern university in Sussex, England.
  • Gus Coverly: Valentine and Chloe’s younger brother, who has been mute since the age of five. (Gus and Augustus are played by the same actor.)

2019-2020 Season Announced by Village Players of Fort Thomas

VP_new logoVILLAGE PLAYERS OF FORT THOMAS ANNOUNCES 2019-2020 SEASON! 

June 20, 2019, Fort Thomas, KY—Village Players of Fort Thomas is excited to announces its 2019-2020 season! All performances will be staged in Village Players’ intimate theater on the bottom level of the building the organization recently inherited from the Fort Thomas Woman’s Club at 8 N Fort Thomas Ave.

Time travel. Second chances. A musical love story told backward and forward. And also dragons. The three-show regular season can be purchased for only $45 at www.villageplayers.org. That’s 25% off the single-show ticket price! Plus there’s a family-friendly production in December for just $12, and Village will produce its annual New Works play festival in June 2020. 

Shows include:

Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, October 4, 5, 6, 10, 11 & 12. This brilliant play moves smoothly between 1809 and the present at the elegant estate owned by the Coverly family and explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between classical and romantic temperaments, and the disruptive influence of sex on our life orbits—the attraction Newton left out. Directed by jef brown.

Of Dragons and Dwarves, December 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, & 15. An original, fantasy musical for children by local playwright Jack Williams and composer Linda Baumheckel. Directed by Steve Myers. This family-friendly production can be purchased individually or as an add-on to the season package. 

Room for Seconds, March 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, & 14 and is the debut full-length play by award-winning local playwright A.K. Forbes. When Zen brings his new, 24-and-a-half-year-old girlfriend home to meet his mother, a sauce made of strawberries sends her to the hospital. In the aftermath, his mother, his ex-girlfriend, and his father conspire to avoid legal culpability. Their effort proves to be ineffective but humorous, revealing hidden motives and secrets, ultimately ending with the status quo safely intact. Directed by Will Lindsey. 

The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, April 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, & 25. An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once, at their wedding, in the middle of the show. Directed by Nathan Henegar.

Village Players of Fort Thomas Presents Six Original Short Plays by Local Playwrights in Annual Production

VP_Life Story logoJune 10, 2019, Fort Thomas, KY—Village Players of Fort Thomas will stage its annual New Works production at 8 N Fort Thomas Ave. LIFE STORY: Six New Plays About Birth, Death and the Stuff In Between features six original short plays by local playwrights and will run June 28-30 in Village Players’ intimate theater on the bottom level of the building the organization recently inherited from the Fort Thomas Woman’s Club.

New Works is a collaborative overseen by Village Players Treasurer Will Lindsey and Angela Klocke Forbes, a local playwright and Village Players member. “A few years ago, Will and I noticed that we had a ‘tipping point’ number of members who were writing plays,” says Klocke Forbes. “We started New Works with the idea that we might be able to set ourselves apart as a community theater—one that develops and produces original work. And best of all, we’ve been able to present fresh material to our audiences.”

LIFE STORY features the work of playwrights Betsy Bossart, Jennifer Davis, A.K. Forbes, Will Lindsey, Judy Sceifres, and Eric Thomas, and the talents of local actors Heather Abbott, Mindy Baird, Rachel Baker, Dan Bavis, Chris Bishop, CJ Bossart, Ginny Butsch, Adam Drake, Jessie Faye, Kiya Fix, Erica Helmle, Meredith Hoffman Conner, Stephanie Klein, Angela Klocke Forbes, Peggy Mcdonald-Allen, Steve Myers, Bill Rinehart, Gretchen Schultz, and Matt Wick.

Nathan Henegar will direct New Works for the second year in a row. “I enjoy helping writers bring their ideas and stories to life in the collaborative laboratory that New Works creates,” he says. “The group is a great part of Village Players and I look forward to bringing the community new and original theatre for years to come.”

Tickets are just $15 and available online at villageplayers.org or at the box office an hour prior to the show each night. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged.

Village Players Of Fort Thomas Hosts Patron Appreciation Night Featuring Tim Mooney

VP_Lot o Shakespeare logoVillage Players of Fort Thomas will host one-man wonder Tim Mooney for a special Patron Appreciation Night performance Thursday, May 30th at 8:00 p.m. in their intimate theatre at 8 N. Fort Thomas Ave. With the recent acquisition of the building that previously belonged to Fort Thomas Women’s Club, Village Players would like to use this opportunity to thank subscribers, donors, and the community for their ongoing support with a FREE one-night-only performance of Mooney’s critically acclaimed “Lot o’ Shakespeare”!

Mooney has memorized one monologue from every Shakespeare play, capturing the most stirring speeches, wicked double-entendres, and delicious sonorous soliloquies ever to emerge from Shakespeare’s pen! Following rave reviews at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and around the United States, Lot o’ Shakespeare is a dynamic tour de force of vocal and physical pyrotechnics featuring 38 monologues chosen entirely at random by the spinning of a Bingo cage! The audience plays along on their individual “IAGO” cards, and the first to match four plays in a row wins a t-shirt! And while the game turns it all into fun, in the process the audience discovers the breadth, the excitement and genius of Shakespeare in passionate scenes of action, character and power!
