Position Overview
The Bruce E. Coyle Acting and Education Internship program is designed to immerse emerging artists interested in building a sustainable career as working actors, community, and teaching artists into a realistic experience environment. In a changing industry landscape, we believe that actors must have a diverse portfolio of work for sustainability. Through this program, interns will develop skills as an actor and in teaching artistry and community engagement. The program is intensive, simulating the multi-tasking required of working artists, balancing performance, teaching, and supplemental work simultaneously.

As actors, interns will experience rehearsing and performing in various performance mediums, including Outreach Tour, Off the Grid immersive experiences, and community performances. As part of the Off the Grid series, interns will also develop material and learn how to self-produce. In 2022-2023, Main Stage opportunities will be limited due to the building transition caused by our capital project. Acting opportunities will be provided through our “Off the Grid” Outreach Tour and potentially through our new play development program.

As teaching artists, interns will be trained to teach in various classroom formats, including drama integration in academic classrooms, after-school enrichment classes, and specialties. Throughout the experience, interns will develop and prepare lesson plans and curricula, work with a wide range of ages and communities, and advance solo teaching.

As members of the engagement team, interns will learn how to facilitate post-show and community discussions, coordinate community events and develop community partnerships. In addition, interns will learn practical community engagement methodology that includes civic, audience, and artistic engagement practices.

Through practical application, interns will develop administrative skills, including email and phone communication, project and time management, data entry, planning, and implementation. We believe that being a working artist is to be self-employed. Therefore, these skills will translate to additional work opportunities for managing a freelance career.

Mentorship is at the foundation of this program. Professional development workshops provide insight into practical opportunities for applying skills as an actor in different mediums and industries and engagement with working artists. Working with the Director of Artistic Engagement, each intern will identify areas of interest and growth at the beginning of the program and work together throughout the experience to monitor the progression. By the end of the program, interns will have an action plan for career next steps, increased skills as a performer, teaching artist, community practitioner, and administrator.

Some of the fundamentals developed will include:

Acting:

  • How to assess and adapt to each environment quickly and adeptly
  • What preparation and professionalism is expected in an equity rehearsal room
  • How to manage multiple scripts at once
  • Training in interactive and immersive acting techniques
  • Devising, writing, and developing new content for alternative venues and mediums
  • The process of self-producing
  • The casting process

Teaching Artist:

  • The art of co-teaching
  • Classroom management
  • Working with all learners
  • Game Theory

BECOMING DR. RUTH
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park

Many of us know Dr. Ruth Westheimer as America’s favorite sex therapist in the 1980s and ‘90s. She opened our eyes to a new way of viewing ourselves and our relationships — but few of us have heard the story of this remarkable woman’s journey. In this heartwarming portrait, Dr. Ruth narrates the harrowing and fascinating details of her life from the tragic separation of her family during the Holocaust to her experiences as an Israeli sniper to her struggles with balancing work, higher education and single motherhood in America. Becoming Dr. Ruth is a humorous, affectionate and illuminating one-woman show that’s full of grit and triumph. Recommended for adult and teenage audiences. This one-woman show about America’s favorite sex therapist appropriately contains discussion of healthy sex and sexuality, while also covering other mature topics. Much like Dr. Ruth, these topics are addressed with a cheerful and disarming tone.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS Bloom at the Playhouse Beginning March 19 with the Modern Classic that Inspired the Blockbuster Movie

PIP_Steel Magnolias promoCINCINNATI (March 3, 2022) — Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will bring Truvy’s beauty salon to the Marx Theatre stage beginning March 19 with the production STEEL MAGNOLIAS. Based on Robert Harling’s beloved off-Broadway hit, which inspired a blockbuster movie of the same name, the show features beloved characters, snappy dialogue and a timeless celebration of female friendship. STEEL MAGNOLIAS, presented by the Leading Ladies runs through April 17. Previews begin March 19, and opening night is March 24.

A tight-knit group of Louisiana women gather regularly to bond, dish and offer advice on everything from motherhood and marriage to tragedy and loss at Truvy’s beauty salon, including beloved characters like the wise-cracking Truvy, her eager new assistant Annelle, curmudgeonly Ouiser, millionaire Miss Clairee, local social leader M’lynn and her sweet-natured daughter Shelby.

“The characters’ quirks and idiosyncrasies are grounded in truth,” adds Laura Gordon, who directs the Playhouse production. “Their relationships are honest. I think they continue to resonate with audiences because they’re so recognizable. I think the play is a perfect mix of warmth, honesty and humor.”

Gordan’s all-female design production team stayed true to the original period in which STEEL MAGNOLIAS was set: the mid-1980s. Costume designer Holly Payne, herself raised in Arkansas, built on her experience growing up as a woman in the South to select authentic period costumes that are true to the time and place of STEEL MAGNOLIAS.

“I think the familiarity of this story is one of its strengths,” Gordon adds. “I’m excited to share a story that embraces friendship through good times and bad, that celebrates kindness and the resilience of the human spirit, all while having a good laugh. As Truvy says, ‘Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.’”
