BETWEEN THE LINES, OUTSIDE THE MARGINS is an original musical revue crafted to amplify and celebrate the power of storytelling within the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. Challenging stereotypes and unveiling new narratives, Margins weaves together musical theatre songs from the classics to new creations in a musical manifesto of truth, vulnerability, and empowerment.

Seeking a diverse, inclusive ensemble cast of about 8-10 artists who bring their own lived experience and/or a desire to learn to a collaborative creative experience. To be explicit, our production believes the following: solidarity is intersectional, black lives matter, gender isn’t a binary, equity and justice over equality, and ally is a verb. We are committed to upholding an accessible, actively anti-racist, inclusive space; and welcome people of all abilities, classes, ethnicities, gender identities, races, sexual orientations, and sizes.

Audition requirements are the standard fare: 16-32 bar cut of a song along with sheet music in the proper key with cuts marked. Ideally, song choice should highlight the artist’s storytelling chops, ability to emotionally connect with both song and audience, and their vocal range. But we’d rather a person come with a song they’re comfortable with than not audition at all. No dancing audition; but the show will contain both staged movement and portions of choreography designed per cast ability.

Rehearsals begin in early January with a rehearsal schedule based on availability. Due to the condensed rehearsal process, few to no conflicts preferred.

BETWEEN THE LINES, OUTSIDE THE MARGINS opens February 4, 2022, and runs through February 12, 2022, at the Aronoff Center’s Fifth Third Bank Theater.

Conceived and written by Jacqlyn Schott and Matthew Nassida, the show is produced by Peter Merten and Kendra Struthers and directed by Jacqlyn Schott, with choreography by Emily Brinkman and music direction by Joshua Goines.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Based on the novel of the same name, Ragtime is a compelling epic capturing the American experience at the turn of the 20th century. Tracking three diverse families in pursuit of the American dream in the volatile “melting pot” of turn-of-the-century New York, Ragtime confronts the dialectic contradictions inherent in American reality: experiences of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair. Over the course of the show, the worlds of a wealthy white couple, a Jewish immigrant father and his motherless daughter, and a Black Ragtime musician intertwine. Together, they discover the surprising interconnections of the human heart, the limitations of justice and the unsettling consequences when dreams are permanently deferred. Featuring many of the historical figures that built and shaped turn-of-the-century America, including J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit and Henry Ford, this musical sweeps across the diversity of the American experience to create a stirring epic that captures the beats of the American experience.
