THE ODD COUPLE
September 10 – October 4, 2020
By Neil Simon

This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.  Winner! 1965 Tony Award, Best Author of a Play.

OLIVER!
October 22 – November 15, 2020
Book, Music and Lyrics by Lionel Bart

Consider yourself at home with Lionel Bart’s classic musical based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of having the true love of a family. With great songs like, “Food Glorious Food”, Consider Yourself”, “As Long As He Needs Me” and “Who Will Buy”!

ELF The Musical
December 3 – 27, 2020
Book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin;  Music by Matthew Sklar;  Lyrics by Chad Beguelin  Based on the New Line Cinema film by David Berenbaum

Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.  Based on the cherished 2003 hit movie, this modern-day holiday classic features great holiday songs like, “Nobody Cares About Santa”, “Never Fall in Love With an Elf”, “There Is a Santa Claus” – sure to make everyone embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
February 4 – 28, 2021
Music by Jule Styne;  Lyrics by Leo Robin;  Book by Anita Loos and Joseph Fields;  Adapted from the novel by Anita Loos

Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend as Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw travel to Paris, pursued by a detective hired by the suspicious father of Lorelei’s fiancé, as well as a rich, enamored old man and many other doting admirers.  There’s the delightfully rich Gus Esmond, son of America’s Button King, The American Olympic Team, the richest widow from Philadelphia, plus Sir Francis and Lady Beekman (she has a diamond tiara that Lorelei just knows would look its best on her own blonde head!) Maybe there’s a future merger between the button business and the zipper business that will bring lots of success (and lots more diamonds) to Lorelei!. Tunes include:  “Bye Bye Baby” and “A Little Girl from Little Rock”, “You Say You Care” and the showstopper –  “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend”!

SEASON EXTRA at the Incline
THE FULL MONTY
March 4 – March 21, 2021
Book:Terrance McNalley; Music/Lyrics: David Yazbek Based the Fox movie, written by Simon Beaufoy.

While spying on their wives at a “Girls’ Night Out,” a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo sees how much the women enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous, out of work and feeling emasculated, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. Though extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally, they seek to conquer their self-consciousness and prejudices. The men discover that they’re stronger as a group, yet each finds the individual courage to “let it go.” The Full Monty is a story full of heart, reazor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzaz. With hilarious songs like “Let It Go”, “It’s a Woman’s World”, “The Goods” and “You Rule My World”.

GREASE
April 1 – April 25, 2021
Book, Music and Lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey

Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “T-Birds” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin’,” “Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee,” “Hand Jive”, “Beauty School Dropout” and more –  recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts is excited to announce its 2020-21 Theatre + Dance academic season. An exact schedule of performances will be released in August 2020.

NOISES OFF
By Michael Frayn
Directed by Ken Jones
Sept. 24 – Oct. 4, 2020
NKU Corbett Theatre

Called “the funniest farce ever written,” NOISES OFF takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothing’s On.” Doors slamming, falling trousers, on and offstage intrigue, and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play. NOISES OFF is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., a Concord Theatricals Company.

ZANNA, DON’T!
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Tim Acito
Additional Book and Lyrics by Alexander Dinelaris
Directed by Michael Hatton
Music Directed by Damon Stevens
Oct. 22 – Nov. 1, 2020
NKU Stauss Theatre

Welcome to Heartsville High, set in a world where everyone is gay–well, almost everyone! The big-man-on-campus is the chess champion, and the captain of the football team is made cool by being cast as the lead in the school musical. The students write a controversial show called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” about straight people in the military, which becomes the catalyst for a young man and woman to fall in love. Enter Zanna, a magical, musical fairy who, with a wave of his wand, brings true love to one and all! A world much like our own, and the chaos that ensues when people love who they want to, gay or straight.

FLOYD COLLINS
Book by Tina Landau
Music and Lyrics by Adam Guettel
Additional Lyrics by Tina Landau
Directed by Jason Danieley
Assistant Directed by Corrie Danieley
Music Directed by Jamey Strawn
Nov. 13-22, 2020
NKU Corbett Theatre

In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself became the attraction when he got trapped 200 feet underground. Alone but for sporadic contact with the outside world, Floyd fought for his sanity and ultimately his life as the rescue effort above exploded into the first genuine media circus. Reporters and gawkers from across the country descended on the property, fueling the hysteria and manipulating the nation into holding its collective breath. This haunting musical – one of the most acclaimed in recent years – beautifully illuminates the transcendent tale of spirituality, hope and one man’s quest for glory. FLOYD COLLINS is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

NKU SOTA is excited to have Broadway actor, singer, concert performer and recording artist JASON DANIELEY as director of FLOYD COLLINS. Danieley appeared Off-Broadway in the musical Hit The Lights! in 1993, but gained recognition in 1996 in Floyd Collins. Ben Brantley of The New York Times noted that Danieley (with others) was “especially winning”. Most recently he appeared in the stage musical adaption of the film Pretty Woman which premiered at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago in March 2018 and transferred to Broadway. jasondanieley.com

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL
Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton
Book by Patricia Resnick
Directed by Corrie Danieley
Music Directed by Jamey Strawn
Feb. 19-28, 2021
NKU Corbett Theatre

Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss – Franklin Hart. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie.

NKU COMMONWEALTH THEATRE ANNOUNCES 2020 SUMMER SEASON

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Commonwealth Theatre Company at Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts is proud to present the musical comedy of BEGUILED AGAIN, and the comedy of NANA’S NAUGHTY KNICKERS as their 2020 summer dinner theatre season. BEGUILED AGAIN – The Songs of RODGERS & HART
Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Conceived By J. Barry Lewis, Lynnette Barkley and Craig D. Ames
Music Arrangements by Craig D. Ames
Co-Directed by Dee Anne Bryll and Ed Cohen
Music Directed by Damon Stevens
June 4-21, 2020

The remarkable partnership of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart spanned twenty-four years, resulting in the scores for thirty stage musicals and nine films. While their songs are acknowledged as among the most sophisticated and witty of their time, they could also be stunning in their simplicity and directness. BEGUILED AGAIN illuminates the astonishing breadth of their output with a musical menu offering nearly fifty selections from the incomparable Rodgers and Hart songbook. This cleverly compiled potpourri juxtaposes the urbane and the melancholy, the sardonic and the romantic, providing ever-changing and contrasting emotional journeys that give this revue real momentum. There is no linear plot or ‘and then they wrote’ narrative. Rather, the songs are grouped thematically in ways that allow them to tell their own stories and reveal their splendor in the process. BEGUILED AGAIN is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

NANA’S NAUGHTY KNICKERS
By Katherine DiSavino
Directed by Michael Hatton/Corrie Danieley

Bridget and her grandmother are about to become roommates. However, what Bridget saw as a unique opportunity to stay with her favorite nana in New York for the summer quickly turns into an experience she’ll never forget. Will Bridget be able to handle all the excitement? Will her nana get arrested – or worse – evicted? NANA’S NAUGHTY KNICKERS is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., a Concord Theatricals Company.
