Sarge–This one-woman show was the critic’s pick in the 2014 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. It is that good.” CPT is proud to bring back this remarkable show for a very limited run.

March 2015 The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, music and lyrics by William Finn, directed by Joey Schnell. Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless charm and humor. Featuring a fast-paced wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescent’s vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of [potentially made-up] words hoping to never hear the soul crushing, pout inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride complete with audience participation, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is delightful den of comedic genius. The small cast and unit set make this a perfect option for high schools or community theatres. THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a fast-paced crowd pleaser and an instant theatre patron favorite.

August 2015 The Last Five Years, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, directed by Shawn Toadvine. Starring Megan Ainsley Callahan and Zachary Huffman. This modern musical ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, form meeting to break-up and from break-up to meeting. Jason Robert Brown’s Drama Desk winner THE LAST FIVE YEARS has been translated into a handful of languages and was named one of Time Magazine’s 10 best shows of 2001. A testament to the show’s longevity and spurred by the show’s regional popularity, THE LAST FIVE YEARS enjoyed an Off-Broadway revival at Second Stage in 2013. A film adaptation is being released in 2014 starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

December 2015 Children of Eden, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, directed by Matthew Wilson. Based on the story of Genesis, the age-old conflict of parents and children takes the stage in this epic, heartfelt Stephen Schwartz musical. From musical theatre greats Stephen Schwartz and John Caird comes a joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children and faith… not to mention centuries of unresolved family business! An expansive and ambitious musical, the original production used a cast of sixty. Adam, Eve, Noah and the “Father” who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that “the hardest part of love… is letting go.”

March 2016 Barefoot in the Park, by Neil Simon, directed by Brent Alan Burington. Nominated! 1964 Tony Award for Best Play. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, as she sees it. He’s too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running “barefoot in the park” would be a start…

KTC Announces THE WELCOME EXPERIMENT & Opens 17th Season with SERIALS!

KNOW THEATRE ANNOUNCES
THE WELCOME EXPERIMENT
AND OPENS THEIR 17TH SEASON WITH SERIALS!

KTC_logoAt last night’s opening of Serials! at Know Theatre of Cincinnati, new Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford announced a bold programming initiative called The Welcome Experiment.

The Welcome Experiment

In the coming season, Know Theatre is adding Wednesday night performances to our MainStage schedule with a special twist: these Wednesday performances will be offered FREE of charge to anyone who wants to see a show.

Inspired by Mixed Blood Theatre Company of Minneapolis and their Radical Hospitality initiative, Know Theatre’s Welcome Experiment will benefit anyone for whom the price of a regular admission ticket is too high a barrier.

Know Theatre hopes that by offering opportunities to see productions free-of-charge, a wider audience will be able to take part—be they neighbors facing economic hardship, fellow artists, students struggling to make ends meet, or even people who simply don’t regularly attend live theatre and might be more willing to take a chance on a show if it is offered for free.

Season 17: Adaptation

This announcement marks the kickoff of Know Theatre of Cincinnati’s 17th season exploring the theme of “adaptation.” Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford and new Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters have selected a season that celebrates a variety of voices and perspectives—including more plays written and/or directed by women, and more performers of color to be represented on Know’s MainStage.

Fringe: Encores and Extras

In addition, Know Theatre will expand the programming associated with the highly popular annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival to include Encores from favorite Fringe productions, and Extras from like-minded artists whose work fits within the Fringe aesthetic. These special events will take place throughout the year, making it possible for Cincinnati to enjoy the spirit of the Fringe Festival beyond the months of May and June.

MainStage Season

Jeremy has a PhD in physics from Harvard. And a time machine. And a plan. Jeremy ‘s plan is to send his thieving cousin back in time to 1863 to find Harriet Tubman and give her guns. Lots and lots of guns. Overwhelmed by the enormity of existence in the 19th century big city, Ishmael finds his only recourse is to go to sea. When he signs aboard the whaling ship Pequod, Ishmael is thrust into a momentous tale of revenge as one-legged Captain Ahab desperately pursues the white whale that maimed him. One of the most enduring, and daunting, works of American literature is stripped to its essence and re-imagined for our intimate theatre.

Bureau of Missing Persons by Lila Rose Kaplan

Directed by Tamara Winters. (November 29-December 20, 2014) People don’t just disappear.

A piece of chalk. A blue scarf. A pocketful of leaves. These clues lead Angela on a quest from her NYC apartment to a cave in Moscow to search for someone who is missing. Inspired by the stories of Borges, Bureau of Missing Persons is a magical tale that explores how we heal.

REGIONAL PREMIERE
Detroit ’67
by Dominique Morisseau
March 18-April 5, 2015

Winner of the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History
It’s 1967 in Detroit. When their parents died, Chelle and Lank inherited their childhood home. To make ends meet the siblings host “basement parties,” spinning the newest records to come out of Motown, a risky business as police crack down on after-hours joints in black neighborhoods. Always at odds, they fight over the future of the family trade. But when a mysterious white woman finds her way into their care and a string of raids increases police brutality around the city, the siblings become divided over much more than business. Suddenly, they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 riots. Detroit ’67 is a tense, entertaining portrayal of the hazards of idealism at the epicenter of a riot.
