TCTC Announces New Managing Director

New Managing Director for The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

TCT_logo(CINCINNATI) — The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is pleased to announce the company’s new Managing Director, Ms. Kim Deaton.

Ms. Deaton is a native Cincinnatian and graduate of the Cincinnati Country Day School (’87). Kim left Cincinnati to attend Vanderbilt University (’91) where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education, and then quickly returned to Cincinnati which she and her family continue to call home.

Kim assumed the role of Managing Director of the Children’s Theatre in September of 2013. Kim’s expertise spans non-profit management, fund raising, strategic planning, market media development, public relations, special events, grant acquisition and major gift acquisition.

Prior to joining The Children’s Theatre, Kim worked as the President of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National MS Society, as the Director of Major Gifts for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and prior to that as the Director of Market Development for Local 12 WKRC-TV and Clear Channel Broadcasting. She served as the Executive Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and spent time operating her own consulting company, advising both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the area of special events, board building, marketing, corporate sponsorship, public relations, fundraising and promotions.

Kim was raised in the nonprofit world as her mother served as the Executive Director for a local nonprofit for 24 years. Kim resides in Mariemont with her three wonderful children Merrell, Kealy and Bryson and has watched her daughter Kealy flourish as a vocal and drama major at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s Board President, Mr. Craig S. Hurwitz, said, “TCTC has been on a transitional journey for the past four years. The hiring of Kim represents the end of that process and is the final piece of the puzzle. Under the leadership of both Artistic Director, Angela Powell Walker, and Kim, our organization is uniquely positioned for success. This is the right leadership team and the right time for us to fulfill our mission of educating, entertaining and engaging children and children at heart through our professional productions and arts education programming.”

“I am thrilled to be joining an organization as well respected as The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati,” Ms. Deaton said. “As the mother of a child who is very active in performing arts, I have seen firsthand how the experience can positively impact a child’s development. A colleague recently said to me ‘The Arts are an independent verification of self-worth for children,’ and that struck me as a powerful and very true statement. Through exposure to our MainStage Productions and programs such as ArtReach and Learning the Craft, children gain exposure to an imaginative and powerful world.”

The Board of Trustees of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is pleased to announce their selection of this exciting, enthusiastic and resourceful talent, Kim Deaton as its new Managing Director.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is dedicated to making the world a richer place in ways that truly matter. A moment of joy in the theater, a better understanding of history or literature through the arts, and a song that you cannot stop humming are small examples of how the arts can spur a child’s learning process to new heights, creating a world that is more interesting, more accessible, and utterly fascinating. Helping a child have this experience is the goal that drives us.

TCTC’s mission is to educate, entertain and engage our young audiences through professional theatrical productions and arts education programming. As we fulfill our mission this season, we will accomplish the following through our three primary programs:

  • MainStage at the Taft Theatre – We will welcome 85,000 children, teachers, and family members, including students from approximately 235 schools across the Tri-State, to one of our four family-friendly and professional musical theater productions at the historic Taft.
  • ArtReach – We will see 90,000 children and their families at one of our 280 touring performances or during an arts-integration workshop or residency.
  • Learning The Craft – Over 300 children will be provided fine arts instruction, including the group that participates in the four-week intensive STAR summer program where we offer professional musical theatre training to some of the region’s most talented youth.

Each year The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati contributes to the vibrancy and cultural vitality of our region by providing nearly 180,000 children and their families with arts exposure-opportunities through performances, workshops and art-making experiences. For thousands of children, our programs are their first professional “arts encounter.” We seek to plant the seed for an ongoing and deeper artistic engagement that blossoms as they return for another one of our programs or as they become patrons of other arts organizations in our cultural community.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Cincinnati New Edgecliff’s Bus Stop with a 4 Star Rating.

In Bus Stop, five weary travelers are stranded at a roadside diner when a winter snowstorm halts their bus. Friendships and romances ensue.

Panelists praised Bus Stop as “a solid opening production by New Edgecliff of a wonderful Inge classic. Nicely directed and designed with a talented cast of local actors”; “a really good show with relatable characters, a strong cast that made me laugh out loud, and think.” Christine Dye’s portrayal of Grace was singled out; she was “a hoot! Her timing and delivery was on point and she was so natural and at ease with her character.” Robert Allen was also applauded for his role as Dr. Lyman: “As a basically unlikeable character, he could have been almost a caricature, but in Bob Allen’s capable hands, he showed remorse and a self-awareness that made him almost sympathetic.”

Bus Stop continues through September 28th. Tickets can be purchased at www.newedgecliff.com.

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Showboat Majestic’s Final Show Applauded by LCT

The cast of Showboat Follies.

The cast of Showboat Follies.

After 23 years, Cincinnati Landmark Productions will no longer be operating the Showboat Majestic, the last original floating theater in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Their final production, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES, opened this weekend and panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) wanted to take the opportunity to recognize this tribute to Showboat as well as the many years of entertainment and music that it has provided.

As Landmark’s website describes it, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES is “a musical revue, featuring great songs from dozens of past shows, comic sketches, specialty dance numbers and a few surprises – in and out of the audience.”

Panelists recommended the show as “a fond farewell to the historic Showboat’s run…filled with melodrama, sketch comedy, and a parody of musicals,” as well as a historical review of the Showboat with audience participation. It was “a fun way to end the season for the showboat…The performers are all familiar favorites to ‘showboaters’ and it is obvious this is a love letter from their hearts to the boat and the ever loyal subscribers.” As one panelist put it, “I felt I was witnessing an important moment in the history of Cincinnati theatre…I heartily recommend the production as a chance to experience this theatre icon for what may be the last time and a chance to say goodbye.”

SHOWBOAT FOLLIES runs through September 29th. Tickets may be obtained on-line at http://www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Another Steinbeck classic comes to life on Cincinnati Shakespeare’s stage this October

CINCINNATI, September 18, 2013 — Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Cincinnati’s stage for the classics, continues their 20th Anniversary Season with the John Steinbeck’s classic OF MICE AND MEN, playing October 18- November 10, 2013. This production is directed by Drew Fracher and features CSC Resident Ensemble members Jeremy Dubin and Jim Hopkins. The production is generously sponsored by LPK and the production design is sponsored by Raymond James.

An American literary classic, OF MICE AND MEN is John Steinbeck’s tale of enduring friendship amidst unendurable hardship. It tells the story of George and Lennie, two down-and-out migrant laborers in pursuit of work and their dream of a piece of land to call their own. As they travel from town to town, the pragmatic George (Jeremy Dubin) struggles to protect the giant but simple-minded Lennie (Jim Hopkins) from his own mistakes and the world’s cruelty. When they secure jobs at a working ranch, a hot-tempered and volatile ranch hand seems bent on causing them trouble, testing their resolve and the limits of their loyalty.

OF MICE AND MEN will feature long-time company members Jeremy Dubin and Jim Hopkins in the roles of George and Lennie. Audiences may remember Mr. Dubin most recently as Fagin in “Oliver Twist” and Sherlock Holmes in CSC’s hit production of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. Audiences will remember Mr. Hopkins from his recent critically acclaimed performance of Bill Sykes in “Oliver Twist” and his unforgettable turn as Lady Bracknell in last winter’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. “It’s such a beautiful and poignant story- the unlikely friendship of these two characters, and the tremendous loyalty they have for each other,” says Jeremy Dubin, “ To get to play that with someone who you already know so well and have so much performance history and experience with is incredibly exciting.”

Helming this project will be Drew Fracher, a favorite Cincinnati director. Mr. Fracher has directed several productions for CSC, including his critically acclaimed productions of the American classics “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Glass Menagerie”. “We’re incredibly excited to have Drew back,” says Producing Artistic Director Brian Phillips, “It’s a perfect match of director and material.” Mr. Fracher was featured as Pa in CSC’s 2012 production of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath”. The creative team behind 2012’s “The Grapes of Wrath”, one of the most critically acclaimed CSC productions of all time, reassembles for another great American masterpiece.

Performances of OF MICE AND MEN are scheduled from October 18-November 10, 2013 on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Preview performances are on Wednesday Oct. 16 and Thursday Oct. 17 at 7:30pm and tickets are $20. No performance on Sunday Oct. 20. The theater is located at 719 Race Street, downtown Cincinnati, two blocks west of the Aronoff Center. Single ticket prices range from $22-$31 on Thursdays and Sundays and from $26-$35 on Fridays and Saturdays. If available, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased 30 minutes before a show with a valid student ID. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups as well as Enjoy the Arts and AAA members.
