Playhouse Celebrates The Man in Black with RING OF FIRE: THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASH, Jan. 17-Feb. 15, 2005

CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE CELEBRATES THE MAN IN BLACK
WITH RING OF FIRE: THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASH,
JAN. 17-FEB. 15, 2015

PIP_Ring of Fire logo(CINCINNATI) – The Man in Black led a colorful life that both reflected and transcended his humble beginnings. RING OF FIRE: THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASH, which runs Jan. 17 through Feb. 15 in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre, celebrates the incomparable legacy of J.R. “Johnny” Cash, one of the most popular entertainers of all time.

Created by Richard Maltby Jr. and conceived by William Meade, RING OF FIRE was adapted from the Broadway production by Richard Maltby Jr. and Jason Edwards. Edwards, who starred in RING OF FIRE on Broadway, will both direct and appear in the Playhouse production, which tells Cash’s story through his songs.

More than a musical biography, RING OF FIRE looks at Cash’s life thematically. From his early years picking cotton in hardscrabble fields to superstardom, the show chronicles both the lows and the highs of the man who traversed musical genres from country and rock to folk and gospel.

“The show tries, in a couple of hours, to touch on every aspect of Mr. Cash’s life — not just his troubled years or his drug years — but also his youth, his faith,” explains Edwards. “He was a very patriotic and spiritual guy, on top of running into some rough times. He never really lost the sense of where he came from and who he was.”

RING OF FIRE encompasses more than 30 of Cash’s classic songs, including the title tune, “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Man in Black,” “A Boy Named Sue” and “I Walk the Line,” the ballad that Rolling Stone magazine this year declared number one on its list of 25 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. Even so, it’s but an iconic sampling of the more than 400 songs that Cash, a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member, has to his credit. Cash was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He placed 48 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and more than 130 hits on the Billboard country singles chart, more than anyone in history.

In addition to Edwards, the RING OF FIRE cast of actors and musicians includes Trenna Barnes, Allison Briner, Walter Hartman, Brantley Kearns, Derek Keeling, Jeff Lisenby (who also serves as musical director), John Marshall, Brent Moyer and Andrew Platt. The creative team includes assistant director/choreographer Denise Patton, set designer John Iacovelli, costume designer Lou Bird, lighting designer Kenton Yeager and sound designer Joe Payne. Jenifer Morrow is the production stage manager, and Andrea L. Shell and Becky Merold are second stage managers.

RING OF FIRE production co-sponsors are Fifth Third Bank and American Modern Insurance Group. Bahl & Gaynor, Inc., is the artist sponsor/Jason Edwards. This production honors the support of Linda and Gary Greenberg.

Cincy Shakes Presents the Greatest Play of the 20th Century, WAITING FOR GODOT! Jan 16-Feb. 7

Cincinnati Shakespeare Presents the Greatest Play of the 20th Century, “Waiting for Godot!”
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is proud to present this tragicomedy of cosmic proportions!

Nicholas Rose and Bruce Cromer.

Nicholas Rose and Bruce Cromer.

CINCINNATI, CINCINNATI, Dec 19, 2014— Cincinnati Shakespeare Company kicks off 2015 with this vaudevillian production of the classic “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett. This production is directed by Cincinnati Shakespeare’s Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips and features Cincinnati Shakespeare’s Resident Ensemble members Bruce Cromer, Jim Hopkins, Nicholas Rose and Brent Vimtrup, joined by young actor Jack Johnson.  The design is generously sponsored by Graydon Head.

“Waiting for Godot” is an absurdist play by Samuel Beckett, in which two loveably hapless vagrants, Gogo and Didi, grapple with the mysteries of the universe, trading barbs and banter as they await the arrival of the eternally truant Godot.  Godot’s absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, has led to many different interpretations and pop culture references since the play’s 1953 premiere and it was voted “the most significant English language play of the 20th century”.  “Waiting for Godot” is Beckett’s translation of his own original French version, “En attendant Godot”, and is subtitled (in English only) “a tragicomedy in two acts”.   The original French text was composed between October 9, 1948 and January 29, 1949.  The premiere was on January 5, 1953 in the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris.  “Waiting for Godot” is considered one of Beckett’s most successful plays with two of the more notable recent revivals both occurring in 2009 – one on London’s West End with Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart and one on Broadway with Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin. “Waiting for Godot” was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Revival of a Play.

This production brings together two of Cincinnati’s favorite actors Bruce Cromer and Nicholas Rose in the featured roles.  Bruce Cromer, most recently seen on Cincinnati Shakespeare’s stage in two sold-out smash hits as Claudius in “Hamlet” and Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird”, has also appeared on the stages of the Shakespeare Festival of New Jersey, Santa Fe Stages, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Clarence Brown Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory and Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.  Nicholas Rose, an audience favorite and founding company member of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, continues his regular appearances on Cincinnati Shakespeare’s stage already appearing in this season’s “Complete Works of William Shakespeare”, “The Great Gatsby” and “The Birds”.

Performances of “Waiting for Godot” are scheduled from January 16- February 7, 2015 on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm with an additional Saturday matinee on Feb. 7.  Preview performances are on Wednesday Jan. 14 and Thursday Jan. 15 at 7:30pm and tickets are $21.  The theater is located at 719 Race Street, downtown Cincinnati, two blocks west of the Aronoff Center.  Single ticket prices range from $22-$32 on Thursdays and Sundays and from $26-$36 on Fridays and Saturdays.  This show is a part of the 2014-2015 subscription season.  If available, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased 30 minutes before a show with a valid student ID.  Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted.  Ticketing fees may apply.  Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups as well as AAA members.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the CSC Box Office at 513.381.BARD (2273) ext. 1, or go online at www.cincyshakes.com.

Due in no small part to its relatable characters, sharp comedic writing and Lucille Ball’s signature zany charm, the show continues to endear new audiences with every passing generation. The program was a technical trailblazer, pioneering the multi-camera shooting technique (still employed by the majority of traditional sitcoms to this day) and the use of 35mm film for the capture of a weekly, 30-minute scripted television program (which made possible the re-airing of episodes at a later date, what we now know as “reruns”). In September 2012,  I LOVE LUCY® was named the “Best TV Show Of All Time” and the “Greatest TV Comedy” by People Magazine and ABC’s “20/20” special “Best in TV: The Greatest TV Shows of Our Time.”

Tango Buenos Aires: ” Song of Eva Perón” | Mon., Jan. 26 | Aronoff Center

CAA_Tango Buenos AiresPerforming a journey through dance and music of the life of Eva Perón

Tickets are on sale now at www.CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center Ticket Office.  Group discount tickets for 10 or more are available by calling (513) 977-4157. Half-Price Student Rush tickets will be available two hours before curtain, with a limit of two tickets per person with a valid student ID at the Aronoff Center Ticket Office only (subject to availability).

Tango Buenos Aires was created for the “Jazmines” festival at the famous Buenos Aires cabaret “Michelangelo” by renowned composer and tango director Osvaldo Requena. The company, with its athletic, sensual dancers and authentic Tango orchestra, met with tremendous success and was immediately added to the season of the General San Martin Municipal Theatre.

The company’s “Song of Eva Perón” is a Tango dance and music presentation inspired by the most important woman in Argentinian history, Eva Perón. Tracing her epic life – from her ascent to fame in the 1930s, to becoming the First Lady of Agentina, to her death in 1952 – this is a sparkling and poignant spectacle that is not to be missed.

“Song of Eva Perón” presents the flowering of a humble and beautiful woman.  Starting from nothing, but propelled by the influence of the Tango, which she first heard while growing up inthe slums of Buenos Aires, Eva attains stardom and blooms to be Argentina‘s First Lady. Her story brought her worldwide acclaim and still resonates with her millions of admirers. The “Song ofEva Perón” is the tale of this mythical figure put into traditional Tango dance and music from Buenos Aires.

The Argentine tango has a mixture of African and Spanish antecedents, and also a strong influence from the Argentine milonga which is sung by Gauchos, the Argentine “cowboys.” In itsbeginnings, the tango was an ill-famed dance, being very fashionable in dance halls and cabarets, and also because the choreography called for the couple to hold each other very close. Tangochoreography allows for a lot of creativity, requiring breaks in the rhythm and perfect coordination between the dancers.

The tango’s constant companion is the piano, although it has been accompanied by the violin, guitar and flute. Currently, the most typical instrument is the bandoneón, which is an accordion.
