(COVINGTON, KY) December 16, 2014 – Shakespeare’s unforgettable love story meets modern-day New York City in The Carnegie’s presentation of WEST SIDE STORY Jan. 9-18, 2015 directed by Brian Robertson. Combining playwright Arthur Laurents’ touching libretto and a masterful score by Leonard Bernstein & Stephen Sondheim, America’s most beloved musical is the latest production in The Carnegie’s 2014-15 Theatre Series.

Featuring a 14-piece orchestra under the musical direction of William White, WEST SIDE STORY will include timeless songs “Somewhere,” “Maria,” and “Something’s Coming,” as Shakespeare’s beloved Romeo & Juliet is transformed to tell the tale of two young, idealistic lovers in modern-day New York City. After finding each other, Tony (Marcus Shields) and Maria (Abigail Paschke) are caught between warring street gangs: the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and still relevant musical dramas of our time.

Ticket prices range from $21 to $30 and are available online at www.thecarnegie.com or by calling The Carnegie Box Office at (859) 957-1940 (open Tues-Friday, noon to 5 pm).

Cincinnati Playhouse Adds Eric Ting as Fourth Associate Artist for 2015-2016 Season

Eric Ting.

Eric Ting.

(CINCINNATI) — Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Artistic Director Blake Robison announced today that Obie Award-winning director Eric Ting will be added next season to the theatre’s Associate Artists program, which was launched by Robison in 2013 for his second season at the Playhouse. Ting will join current associate artists Timothy Douglas, Michael Evan Haney and KJ Sanchez, who have served the Playhouse in that capacity for the past two years.

Robison has extended the Associate Artist program beyond its initial two-year mandate so that each of these artists will have an ongoing relationship with the theatre and community. “The Associate Artists program is an inclusive, forward-looking model that has generated a lot of excitement,” Robison said. “They form the backbone of our directing corps and bring diverse backgrounds, experiences and viewpoints to the Playhouse. “I’m thrilled to welcome Eric to the Cincinnati Playhouse family,” Robison continued. “As our fourth associate artist, he will direct plays, participate in season planning, join us in community outreach and bring his own network of connections to benefit the Playhouse.

“I’ve known Eric for nearly 15 years, when he began his career as a theatre student at the University of Tennessee. Since then, he has created an impressive body of work as one of the country’s most gifted young directors. He’s in touch with a new generation of American playwrights, and he brings a fresh perspective to the classics. He’s distinguished himself off-Broadway with an Obie Award. And his time at Long Wharf Theatre has given him experience in an institutional theatre.”

“I’m incredibly honored to be named a Cincinnati Playhouse associate artist,” Ting said. “I’ve long admired Blake’s work as an artistic leader and have been following the storied work of the Playhouse ever since my sister’s family settled in nearby Montgomery. The Associate Artists program combines two of the things I hold most dear in life: art-making and community building. There’s no more human art than the theatre, no art better suited to connecting us. And the Playhouse is a true testament to that.”

Ting’s recent directing credits include the world premiere The World of Extreme Happiness by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, which debuted at Goodman Theatre and opens in February at Manhattan Theatre Club; A Great Wilderness by Sam Hunter at Williamstown Theatre Festival; the world premiere of Rising Son by Dick Lee at Singapore Repertory Theatre; Jackie Sibblies Drury’s We Are Proud to Present A Presentation on the Herero of Namibia, Formerly South-West Africa from the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915, a world premiere at Soho Rep and Victory Gardens Theater for which he received the Obie Award for direction; the world premiere of Miriam by Nora Chipaumire at BAM Next Wave; and Warrior Class by Ken Lin at Alliance Theatre. Upcoming projects include Brownsville Song: B-Side for Tray by Kimber Lee at Long Wharf and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate at the Mark Taper Forum.

As Long Wharf’s associate artistic director, Ting has directed the world premieres of Laura Jacqmin’s January Joiner, Aditi Brennan Kapil’s Agnes Under the Big Top and Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, which he also co-adapted. He has directed workshops and readings for the Lark Play Development Center, Vineyard Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, the Public Theater, Hartford Stage, Prelude, Victory Gardens Theater, Goodman Theatre, Marin Theatre Company, Bay Area Playwrights, ACT (San Francisco) and the Vineyard Arts Project.

Ting’s personal awards and grants include a Theatre Communications Group New Generations Future Leaders fellowship and a Jerome and Roslyn Milstein Meyer Career Development Prize. A founding member of the artists’ collective INTELLIGENT BEASTS, his work has been presented internationally, including France, Canada, Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Bali.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of the community contributors to the ArtsWave campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Cincy Fringe Encore of SOMETHING SOMETHING NEW VAGINA from Rebecca King

KNOW THEATRE and the CINCINNATI FRINGE FESTIVAL present
A Cincy Fringe Encore of SOMETHING SOMETHING NEW VAGINA from Rebecca Kling!

A solo performance about laughter, surgery, activism, and a brand new vagina.

CFF_Something Something New VaginaThe Cincinnati Fringe Festival and Know Theatre of Cincinnati are proud to announce the return of Rebecca Kling’s hit 2014 Fringe show, Something Something New Vagina. This Cincy Fringe Encore will take place January 9 & 10 at 8PM in The Underground at Know Theatre.

Something Something New Vagina is a solo performance about loving one’s self and one’s body. It’s also about a vagina: Rebecca Kling’s fancy new vagina. Prior to her performance of this show at the 2014 Cincy Fringe, Kling was seen in Cincinnati at the 2012 Fringe with Storms Beneath Her Skin. She’s delighted to be back (she was never one to call it clits) and is ready to tackle issues of identity without ovary-acting. Climaxing with a Strip Q&A, you’d be doing yourself a dis-cervix if you miss it.

Something Something New Vagina was a 2014 Cincinnati CityBeat Critic’s Pick.

About the Artist: Rebecca Kling is a transgender artist and educator who explores gender and identity through solo pieces and educational workshops. Her multidisciplinary performances incorporate conversational storytelling, personal narrative, humor, movement, and more. Kling takes the position that sharing accessible queer narrative with a wide audience is a form of activism, and that understanding combats bigotry. She regularly tours to colleges, universities, and theatre festivals across the country, and has received praise from media outlets coast to coast. In 2013, Kling was named as part of the inaugural Trans 100, a list celebrating excellence in the transgender community. In 2014, she was named as the as one of 25 Writers to Watch by the Guild Literary Complex.

Tickets for this Cincy Fringe Encore are just $15! Call our box office at 513-300-5669 or visit https://know.tixato.com/buy for tickets.

MamLuft&Co. Dance in Concert at the Aronoff, Jan. 9 & 10

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Cincinnati’s Modern Dance company MamLuft&Co. Dance performs its first-ever mixed repertory concert to take place on an Aronoff Center stage. The Company offers that this event — taking place January 9 & 10, 2015 at the downtown arts center — will be a refreshing change from the holiday season that immediately precedes it.

The dance company was recently named “Best Dance Company Pushing the Envelope” (2012) and described as “intrepid” and “impressive” by CityBeat. MamLuft&Co. Dance normally focuses on producing original, evening-length works. As such, a concert at the Aronoff consisting of only previously-premiered mixed-repertory from prior seasons has been unprecedented for the Company, now in its eighth season.

Having just completed a successful fall touring season (during which the Company of eight dancers performed in Chicago and Roanoke, Virginia), MamLuft&Co. Dance embarks on a home season at the Aronoff Center, first with MamLuft&Co. Dance in Concert, January 9 and 10, and then, the premiere of Memoriam (In Memory of Memory), May 22 and 23.

In MamLuft&Co. Dance in Concert, the Modern Dance troupe will perform the following recent favorites, in short-form adaptations from their original full-length versions:

Latitude (2012) is a dance-for-camera film created in five sites in Cincinnati on ML&Co.’s fifth anniversary.

Maps (2013) is an award-winning multi-media work about way-finding and getting lost in order to be found.

Director and lead choreographer, Jeanne Mam-Luft, says of the performance line-up, “It’s been such a journey these last seven years, here in Cincinnati. Seeing four of our works from the past three seasons, right next to each other, is very illuminating, even for those of us involved. I think audiences will not only see our signature style, but they’ll also see our range. The technique and skills of the dancers amaze me every day, and it is quite a full show of work — very physical, very real. We’re grateful to be revisiting these works and hope Cincinnati will take the opportunity to either see them again in a different form or catch them after missing them the first time around.”

Tickets will be available at (513) 621-ARTS (2787) via the Cincinnati Arts Association box office at the Aronoff Center for the Arts (650 Walnut St., Cincinnati) or cincinnatiarts.org. Single tickets are available for $26 ($15 student and $19 senior tickets) or $40 for special, limited-availability VIP Package which include a pre-show backstage tour and gift bag with refreshments and ML&Co. photo notecards. Two-show Season Passes for MamLuft&Co. Dance’s Aronoff season are available for a savings ($72 VIP, $47 adults, $34 seniors, and $27 students).

MamLuft&Co. Dance gratefully acknowledges the operating support of the Ohio Arts Council, which helped fund this organization with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. MamLuft&Co. Dance is a resident company of the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Clifton Cultural Arts Center, where it is sponsored by Mark McKillip.
