Bridget Benton Appointed Cincinnati Arts Association’s Chief Operating Office

[Cincinnati, OH]  The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Bridget Benton as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Bridget previously worked for CAA as the General Manager of the Aronoff Center for the Arts from September 2022 – August 2024.

As COO, Bridget plays a pivotal role in steering one of the Greater Cincinnati region’s premier performing arts organizations and oversees the operations of the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. With a career steeped in arts management and operational excellence, Bridget brings a wealth of experience to her position, combining strategic oversight with a passion for community engagement and artistic innovation.

“We are delighted to welcome Bridget to her newest role with the Cincinnati Arts Association family,” said Steve Loftin, CAA President. “Her previous experience with CAA, combined with her sensitivity, wisdom, creativity, and exceptional work ethic, will be a great asset to our team. As COO, she will bring her abundant talents and focus on the guest experience to our entire operation.”

Bridget grew up in Northern Kentucky and spent many years building her professional career outside of Greater Cincinnati. She spent ten years in Utah, where she served as an assistant dean at Brigham Young University, overseeing the operations of the Harris Fine Arts Center and curating its BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series and the Listen Up! Series. She returned to the region in August 2022 to join the Cincinnati Arts Association as the General Manager of the Aronoff Center.

Bridget completed her undergraduate studies at Hanover College and holds an MFA degree in Stage Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is an active member of the International Association of Venue Managers and the Association of Performing Arts Professionals.

“The opportunity to return to Cincinnati has been incredibly special to me,” said Bridget. “This is a community that I love and am eager to continue to serve. The region has a rich cultural ecosystem and is poised to continue an upward trajectory, and I am excited to play a role in that growth and progress.”

CINCINNATI ARTS ASSOCIATION
Founded in 1992, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of two of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts. Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves upwards of 700,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in the Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center); and supports the work of more than one dozen resident companies. Since the inception of its acclaimed arts education programs in 1995, CAA has reached more than two million students and adults.

Bank of America Awards $500K Anchor Grant to The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

Grant will help to close the Emery Theater campaign gap

Cincinnati, OH – The Emery Theater is one step closer to reopening as the home of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) thanks to a generous $500,000 grant from Bank of America– the first of this size in the Cincinnati area. TCT will use these funds to further renovate, restore, and reimagine the landmark Emery Theater in the historic Over-The-Rhine neighborhood in downtown Cincinnati, creating a state-of-the-art venue unlike any other in the region.

Bank of America’s generous grant leaves TCT with just $4.3 million left to raise for its transformational campaign, “A Crown for the Queen City.” This campaign aims to raise $51 million, enhancing access to theatre for families and young children throughout the region and ensuring TCT’s future as a premiere arts organization.

Kim Kern, TCT’s President and CEO, said, “The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is thrilled and honored to have received the first-ever Cincinnati-awarded Anchor Grant from Bank of America. These funds have significantly closed the gap in terms of total funds still needed for the Emery Theater renovation and are helping to provide a permanent home for TCT MainStage productions and expanded programming, impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of children annually.”

The grant is part of Bank of America’s longstanding commitment to strengthen Cincinnati by addressing key issues fundamental to economic opportunity and social progress. This support helps make the arts more accessible to communities around the world and preserve heritage sites like the Emery Theater for generations to come. Restoring this site, one of only four acoustically pure venues in the country that has been dormant for decades, is an important preservation initiative and directly contributes to the continued neighborhood revitalization efforts in Over-The-Rhine. “We share The Children’s Theatre’s vision for making the arts accessible for future generations which is why we directed this strategic philanthropic investment to help build stronger communities,” said Mark Ryan, President, Bank of America Cincinnati. “The Emery Theater is an iconic landmark in our community and supporting TCT with our very first anchor grant in Cincinnati will increase access to the arts, encourage economic development, and inspire the next generation. We are looking forward to many fantastic performances on this stage for years to come.”

In 2021, TCT embarked on a capital campaign to purchase, restore, and reimagine the historically significant Emery Theater. TCT envisions not simply a restoration but a reinvention of the theater into a modern and memorable venue equipped with the latest technology that inspires and teaches diverse audiences. TCT plans to incorporate a turntable stage lift, projection mapping, a 40’ x 60’ video wall, and an automated fly system to enliven the audience experience and overcome backstage and wing limitations. This effort will expand TCT’s reach and impact locally and elevate TCT as the #1 children’s theatre in the nation.

With The Emery as its home, TCT will unlock its potential to inspire diverse audiences with original works and even more innovative programming. TCT will also expand programming for younger children (theatre for the very young) and teenagers with work considered a revenue risk in its current rented space. Additionally, the renovation of a landmark building strengthens the historic fabric of downtown, preserving an invaluable sense of place for the community while increasing property values in the area.

TCT entered a purchase and sale agreement for the theater in April 2021 and officially purchased it in December 2023. TCT held a groundbreaking ceremony on January 30, 2024. Construction will be complete in the summer of 2025, and the first production in the space will open in October 2025 with its 2025-2026 MainStage season.

History of The Emery Theater
Imagined by philanthropist Mary Emery and designed by the famed architectural firm of Samuel Hannaford & Sons, the Emery Auditorium opened in January 1912 with an inaugural concert by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The acoustically exceptional 2,200-seat theater in Over-the-Rhine was once considered one of the top concert halls in the country. Sergei Rachmaninoff, John Philip Sousa, George Gershwin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bette Davis, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. all stood on the Emery stage at various points in its history.

The Emery was also the performance home of TCT until 1969 when the University of Cincinnati took ownership of the property and ran it as the College of Applied Sciences until 1989. The theater was used for films, lectures, and meetings for the next decade. While the building’s upper floors were developed as apartments in 2001, the theater has fallen into disrepair since that time. TCT is the Emery Theater’s best hope to be restored to its former glory and to regain its place as a memorable and iconic arts venue.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati Opens the 24/25 Season with CAMP SIEGFRIED by Bess Wohl

This love story based on true events runs September 13–28, 2024

The Know Theatre of Cincinnati opens its 27th Season with a new play about the terrifying allure of fascism.

CAMP SIEGFRIED by Bess Wohl tells the story of two young Americans who fall in love at Summer Camp while slowly being indoctrinated by the political right. Called “thoughtful” and “disturbing” by the New York Times, this Regional Premiere runs September 13–28, 2024. Production sponsored by the Morse & Betty Johnson Foundation. Directed by Bridget Leak.

“She” is the newcomer at camp, and “He” is a longtime camper showing her the ropes. They are both golden. There is dancing, and beer, and swimming and archery, the twinkle of fairy lights and the spark of romance. It’s 1938, and the world is on the brink of war when two young, idealistic Americans meet and fall in love at Camp Siegfried, a wholesome Long Island summer camp exclusively for American youth of German descent.

“This play is so beautifully written,” says Producing Artistic Director Bridget Leak. “It’s a love story and a political story which is a perfect intersection of what I think makes theatre so incredibly powerful. CAMP SIEGFRIED is for anyone who is excited or interested in where we could be headed as a country; it shows ways in which young people become involved and get excited about seeing change in the world and it also shows the flipside of that: the ways in which people are passing along hatred and creating an unsafe world. This play captures the experience of being caught up in a movement that seems exciting while not realizing how dangerous it might be.”

Middletown Lyric Theatre To Close After 2024 Season

Dear Followers and Friends

Recently we informed our Donors & Season Ticket Holders that at the end of this season Middletown Lyric Theatre will close its doors. We cannot begin to thank them enough as well as our volunteers and performers for the past 16 years of support at 1530 Central Avenue.
Since its inception, 46 years ago, M.L.T. has been a mainstay in downtown Middletown. We have participated in more community events than we can count and have witnessed the losses of a once thriving “arts community.” Gone are Middletown Summer Youth Theatre, The Middletown Symphony Orchestra, Middletown Youth Symphony, the High Fever Follies, the Tri-Arts Festival, The SORG Opera Company and of course MidFest; the city-wide celebration of art & culture. These organizations and events played a vital and integral role in the social and economic development of Middletown.

However, times change and so do communities and once again it is time to change. It is the goal of the M.L.T. Board of Directors, to draw on its supporters, volunteers and participants for new ideas on how to reimagine, our theatre company, so that it can better serve the greater Middletown community as well as continue to contribute to the arts communities of Greater Dayton & Cincinnati.

So, until that “new day” arrives we hope we will see you at the theatre for our final two productions, THE GLASS MENAGERIE in September and THE THANKSGIVING PLAY in November.
