World Premiere Solo Piece by Award-Winning NY-Playwright Excavates the Creator’s ‘Mad’ Great Grandmother at the Cincy Fringe Festival in SHE BURIED THE PISTOL

CINCINNATI, OH – Following sold-out runs of her immersive apocalyptic audio adventure (BEAR EATS BEAR) in Brooklyn, Toronto, Charlotte, Austin, and the Minnesota Fringe, award-winning playwright, Lydia Blaisdell, offers the world premiere of her first solo work, which weaves family secrets, medical records, and photographs together, unearthing her great-grandmother’s decades lost in a state-run asylum.

In 1931, Cora Lockett—an accomplished pianist, teacher, and mother of three–was held in a state asylum against her will until her death 32 years later. “She Buried the Pistol” examines Cora’s “madness,” and whether the patterns handed down from our ancestors can ever be laid to rest. A current member of the OBIE-Award winning playwriting group Youngblood at Ensemble Studio Theater and a graduate of the Michener Fellowship for Writers, this piece will be Blaisdell’s first performance of her own work in over a decade.

Press for SHE BURIED THE PISTOL

“Part of the privilege of seeing theater is being able to negotiate the different angles of experience in a shared space with characters who are living those orientations in real time. In the last few weeks, I’ve loved She Buried the Pistol by Lydia Blaisdell for that reason.” – Gracie Gardner, New York Theatre Review, 2018

Past Press for Blaisdell’s Plays

***** “Absolutely worth it; a little scary, [a little funny], a little heartbreaking, and very, very human.” – Audience review of Bear Eats Bear, Minnesota Fringe 2017

“Thoughtful and tenderhearted, Bear Eats Bear is a great curiosity”- The Austin Chronicle, 2017, review of the Rude Fusion production of Bear Eats Bear

“…a feminist study of the tragic injustices suffered by ordinary women for centuries, perhaps millennia” – Lexington Herald Leader, review for The Silent Woman in 2015

THERE AIN’T NO MORE! Makes Cincinnati Debut

CFF18_ThereAintNoMore1Award-Winning Tour-de-Folk Operetta comes to Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

THERE AIN’T NO MORE! is a raw and authentic American folk music experience performed by solo-show newcomer Willi Carlisle and directed by Joseph Fletcher. This production is presented as a part of the 2018 Cincinnati Fringe Festival with performances at the Arts Academy.

An aged folksinger confronts the life he led, the legacy he will leave behind, and even death itself with five instruments, square-dance calls, and enough dirty jokes to make a beaver blush. The medication-addled musician relives lost love, his experience during the Vietnam War, years of political activism, and adventures into the American wilderness in this haunting, heartfelt hootenanny.

“Powerful…Both down-home and brainy, THERE AIN’T NO MORE! is worth seeking out.” (Roger Catlin, Washington Post)

“A poetic celebration of America’s original art form that is simultaneously ancient and avant-garde.” (Orlando Weekly)

“Warm eyes, fierce fingers and an even more intense stage presence … casual listeners might not be ready for the potency of [Willi Carlisle’s] performance.” (Creative Loafing Tampa)

THERE AIN’T NO MORE! addresses the fading and sometimes troubling legacy of American folk culture. Developed in collaboration between artist Willi Carlisle and director Joseph Fletcher, the play is the product of five years of research, down-home poetry, field recordings, music-mentorship, and folklore amidst the misty mountains of the Arkansas Ozarks.

Top Critic’s Choice as ‘BEST SHOW’ at the 2017 Orlando Fringe Festival. Awarded ‘OUTSTANDING NATIONAL ACT’ at 2017 St. Lou Fringe. Winner of “Singular Award” at the 2018 Sarasolo Festival.

Willi Carlisle is an “Ozark renaissance folklorist” who writes “brilliant, slice of life Americana.” (Sing Out! Magazine) A theatre artist, folksinger, poet, and square-dance caller, Willi received a BA from Knox College in Creative Writing and Performance Studies, and an MFA in Poetry at the University of Arkansas. His work has appeared in The Journal of American Folklore, The Midwest Review, and elsewhere. Willi is a co-leader of the Fayetteville Oldtime Music and Dance Society and a company member with the Artist’s Laboratory Theater. His debut EP, “Too Nice to Mean Much,” is available at www.willicarlisle.com along with additional show info.

Joseph Fletcher is a director, producer, and stage manager. Past directing credits include Purim-Schmutz, China the Whole Enchilada (NYC), The New Now, Las Posadas, Alley 38, War of the Worlds, The Pillowman, Candide, and The Sunshine Boys (Regional). In various capacities he has worked with the Walnut Street Theatre, Cirque Du Soleil, the National Tour of Chicago the Musical, The Signature Theatre, Prospect Theatre Company, Target Margin Theatre, Hippodrome State Theater, and Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and Orlando Opera. He is a founding member and artistic producer for the Artist’s Laboratory Theatre a nonprofit community based devised theatre company in Fayetteville, AR. He has a BFA in Theatre from the University of Central Florida.

THERE AIN’T NO MORE! has seven performance at the Art Academy (1212 Jackson St, Cincinnati, OH 45202) on May 31st at 8:30 pm, June 2nd at 8:30 pm, June 3rd at 6:30 pm, June 5th at 8:30 pm, June 6th at 6:30 pm, June 8th at 6:30 pm, and June 9th at 4:00 pm — Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.cincyfringe.com.

The Human Race Takes You on a Madcap, Cheeky and Hysterical Ride through Shakespeare’s Works

The Human Race closes its 31st Season with all 38 of Shakespeare’s plays performed in just 97 minutes, May 31 – June 17, 2018 at the Loft Theatre.

(Dayton, OH) —This June, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) is celebrating the Bard with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]. Get ready for a show like no other. It’s an irreverent, roller-coaster ride with the Bard that will leave you breathless with laughter as three incredibly talented actors take on all 38 of his plays in just 97 minutes… with a good amount of creative editing. Part improve-run-amok, part audience participation, all delightfully absurd, this merry mashup leaves no funny bone untickled and features a comic troupe lead by one of Ohio’s finest Shakespearean actors, Human Race Resident Artist Bruce Cromer.

“This is the perfect finale to our Season of Laughs,” said Human Race President & Artistic Director Kevin Moore.  “With all the zany antics of these three comedians, it is safe to say it will provide more laughs per minute than any previous show this season.  And that is saying a lot!  If you are a fan of Shakespeare, you will have a great time.  If you hate Shakespeare, you will ADORE this show.”

“I’m happy to be back in Dayton, Ohio,” said director Aaron Vega. “This is where I cut my teeth as a young theatre professional and I’m excited to bring this show’s ice-cream-sundae-with-sprinkles-and-chocolate-sauce brand of joy to a community that means so much to me. I don’t know about you, but I need a break from politics and news every once in a while and this show will be like a cleansing sorbet for your mind… or a bubble bath for your brain…. or a steak after a winter of potatoes… or… you get the idea.”

Aaron Vega (HRTC’s Sweeney Todd, Other Desert Cities and Director of Twelfth Night and Taking Shakespeare), an alumnus of Wright State University’s Professional Actors Training Program and The Human Race’s Artistic Apprentice program, returns to The Race to direct The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]. “With Aaron’s background in Shakespeare, comedy and the immersive theatre movement,” Kevin continued, “he is the perfect person to lead this merry band of clowns.”

The preview performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] is Thursday, May 31. Opening night is Friday, June 1.

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM
The cast of three includes two Human Race veterans and one new face to local audiences.

Bruce Cromer (HRTC’s Macbeth, I Hate Hamlet, I Am My Own Wife)Shaun Patrick Tubbs (HRTC’s Jitney, WB’s Gossip Girl, ABC’s General Hospital, Austin Shakespeare’s Macbeth), and Jordan Laroya (ShakespeareLIVE!’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar, MaineStage Shakespeare’s Othello and Love’s Labour’s Lost.)
