Outer Space, Nuclear Opera? THE BRADBURY TATTOOS to Premiere in Cincinnati, July 13 & 22

MISC_The Bradbury Tattoos logoComposer Zac Greenberg, who is already known for writing fusion jazz and rock music that is other-worldly, has teamed up with dramatist Michael Burnham to create a science fiction opera about space aliens, astronauts, nuclear war and the end of the world.

THE BRADBURY TATTOOS, based on the late Ray Bradbury’s short story anthology “The Illustrated Man,” will premiere at Memorial Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 13 and 22. The opera is a presentation of concert:nova, a contemporary-classical ensemble founded by musicians from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Partial funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The opera is about how people react to unusual situations,” Greenberg said.

Greenberg has composed music for Cincinnati Ballet, Blink! Cincinnati, modern dance companies throughout the United States, award-winning feature-length and short films, as well as multimedia and virtual reality programs.

“After David Bowie died, I was talking with Ted Nelson, co-artistic director of concert:nova, about how so much of his music was character-driven,” Greenberg said. “We wanted to do something similar, and then I started thinking about Ray Bradbury’s stories. We approached Michael Burnham to write the libretto.”

Burnham is a retired theatre professor, who formerly taught at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He has narrated symphony concerts for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Salt Lake Symphony Opera and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, among others. His adaptation of Stravinsky’s “l’Histoire du Soldat”premiered at the Salt Lake Symphony Opera.

“Bradbury is not giving us cautionary tales here, so much as he is pointing out all the little things we want to and ought to hang onto and cherish as we struggle in our move toward a more just and loving world,” Burnham said.

Though the stories are different, they share a common theme of humans coping with a frightening future:

  • “Kaleidoscope” – The crew of a disabled spacecraft reflects on their liveswhile drifting toward death.
  • “Zero Hour” – Children play a game called “Invasion,” which turns out to be more than a game.
  • “The Highway” – A husband and wife who live near a highway help refugees fleeing a nuclear war.
  • “The Last Night of the World” – A married couple goes about their normal routines, despite realizing that the world is about to end.

As in Bradbury’s original book, the operatic stories are woven together by an enigmatic character called “the Illustrated Man,” whose body is covered by animated tattoos.

“I feel that these are four really beautiful stories; probably some of the best from ‘The Illustrated Man,’” said Kelvin Chan, director. “Whether we are talking about the end of the world, or the atom bomb, or what it means to fall out of space after a rocket explodes, or Martians invading the earth through another dimension, these four stories really deal with how to be human.”

THE BRADBURY TATTOOS stars Ben Flanders, Thom Mariner, Pedro Willis-Barbosa, Melisa Bonetti, Jenna Schroer, Peggy Ann, Alex Schoeny, Kathryn Zajac Albertson, Dana Pundt, Thom Dreeze, Kelcey Steele, Naomi Lewin, Keisha Kemper and Michael Burnham.

The world premiere of “The Bradbury Tattoos” will take place at Memorial Hall, 1225 Elm Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, on Friday, July 13, at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 22, at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 general admission/$20 students and are available at www.memorialhallotr.com or by calling (513) 977-8838. Information about “The Bradbury Tattoos” and concert:nova is available at http://concertnova.com/bradbury-tattoos/.

The Drama Workshop Celebrates a Record-Setting Season

TDW_The Girls of Millers Court promo

TDW’s world premiere of THE GIRLS OF MILLER’S COURT received 17 awards for excellence from the Association of Community Theatres of Greater Cincinnati. Tickets for the 2018-2019 season are on sale now. (Left to Right: Susan Unes, Jeanette Tacon, Stephanie Klein, Heather Pfeiffer & Elizabeth Beatty. Photo by Tammy Cassesa.

(Cheviot, Ohio) The Drama Workshop has concluded another great year of theatre in its home in the Cheviot business district, setting new records for attendance and critical recognition, and is excited to build on last year’s success as it prepares for its 2018-2019 season.

For the 2017-2018 season, over 4,000 people attended shows at The Drama Workshop, and the theatre company has now welcomed over 20,000 patrons since opening its facility in October 2012.

The group also received a record number of annual awards from the Association of Community Theatres of Greater Cincinnati, with 80 citations for excellence in acting, direction, and other performance and technical areas ranging from scenic design to properties to costuming. This makes the Cheviot-based company among the most widely acclaimed theatre groups in greater Cincinnati.

Among the highlights of the past season was the world premiere of local author Jack Williams’ play, “The Girls of Miller’s Court,” which chronicles the 1888 battle of wits between Jack the Ripper and his intended victims. The show sold out all 9 performances, and brought home 17 awards for theatrical excellence, including for producer Valeria Amburgey, director Jef Brown, and a host of other technicians and actors. The show was named the Cincinnati-region alternate to the Ohio Community Theatre Association state festival to be held in September.

Sold-out performances were not unique to this one show – in the last six years, TDW has seen its attendance increase 300%. Next season, the all-volunteer group is increasing the number of performances for each play to accommodate the increased demand for seats.

Tobie Braverman, TDW’s president, attributes the success of the group to its many volunteers. “TDW can produce quality theatre at an affordable price thanks to all the actors and production crew who commit countless hours simply for the love of live theatre,” she said. “It’s because of them that TDW gets these accolades, and it’s because of them our audiences see consistently great shows. We are extremely proud that the 2017-18 season has continued that trend, and we are excited to move on to the 2018-19 season.”

TDW’s new five-show season kicks off on August 10th, with the hysterical old-style melodrama, “Egad! The Woman in White,” followed by four more shows between October 2018 and May 2019: the American classic, “The Philadelphia Story”; a Christmas-themed musical review, “A Taffeta Christmas”; the thought-provoking “Love, Loss, and What I Wore”; and the inspirational musical, “Working.”

Season tickets are $70 each and may be ordered by phoning the TDW box office at 513.598.8303. In addition to a discount over the regular ticket prices, season ticket holders also receive reserved, preferred seating in what is normally a general seating venue.

In addition to season tickets, single show tickets for “Egad! The Woman in White” are also on sale and can be ordered through the TDW box office. Seating is limited, and reservations are strongly recommended.

THE DRAMA WORKSHOP was founded in 1954. TDW is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to advancing education and promotion of the theatrical arts. The Drama Workshop is widely recognized as one of greater Cincinnati’s most accomplished community theater organizations, garnering dozens of awards annually from the Association of Community Theatres of Greater Cincinnati. TDW productions are frequently selected to represent the Southwest Ohio region at the Ohio Community Theatre Association annual conference, with this past season’s production of “The Girls of Miller’s Court” being named alternate from the region. TDW was also honored to represent the state of Ohio at the 2013 and 2017 American Association of Community Theatre regional conferences. The Drama Workshop has been recognized by the Cincinnati Preservation Association for their efforts to rehabilitate the former Glenmore Bowl into The Glenmore Playhouse. Prospective members, and individuals or businesses interested in becoming involved or in helping advance TDW’s mission are encouraged to contact the group through our website at www.thedramaworkshop.org, or by phone at 513-598-8303.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (Attempts to) Tackle Shakespeare’s Whole Canon … In One Evening with the Hilarious THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED)!

CSC_Complete Works promo1

Miranda McGee, Justin McCombs & Geoffrey Barnes. By Mikki Schaffner.

38 Plays. 90 Minutes. 3 Actors. All the best bits of the Bard.

Cincinnati, June 27, 2018 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company opens its 25th Anniversary Season with the comical Shakespeare send-up The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)by Jess Wingfield, Adam Long, and Daniel Singer, playing July 20 – August 11, 2018. The production is directed by CSC Associate Artistic Director, Sara Clark, and features Resident Ensemble Members Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, Justin McCombs, and Miranda McGee. This production reunites the cast from two previous comedy hit productions from CSC summers past: The Complete History of America (abridged) and All the Great Books (abridged). This production is generously sponsored by Beam Suntory.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) features three actors on a mission: to bring the entirety of Shakespeare’s works to life on the stage in one fell swoop. Gallop along with them as they careen wildly through all the comedies, histories and tragedies using a trunkful of props, wigs, and outrageous costumes – it’s a joyous Shakespeare jambalaya you definitely don’t want to miss. “If you like Shakespeare, you’ll like this show. If you hate Shakespeare you’ll love this show!” said The Today Show and The New York Times said this play is “Pithier than Python. Irresistible.”

Associate Artistic Director Sara Clark says of directing the production, “Directing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is always one of those ‘I can’t believe they’re paying me to do this’ sort of experiences. The script is wonderful…filled with actual jokes (not just references), so that even if you’ve never seen a Shakespeare play in your life, you still get to come along for the ride. Like all the best comedies, it’s fast, it’s deeply committed to the novelty of the conceit, and it offers three actors the opportunity to flex the full range of their comedic chops–verbal dexterity,  rapid-fire delivery, physical shtick, puns, goofy props, silly hats, boys in dresses…the list goes on.”

The cast features Miranda McGee, Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, and Justin McCombs all long-time members and fan favorites of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Resident Company of actors. This comedic trio returns to the CSC stage after hit performances of The Complete History of America (abridged) and All the Great Books (abridged) at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in 2015 and 2016 and Ms. McGee and Mr. McCombs have been splitting audience sides for over a decade in Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!).  CityBeat said of the trio that “all three are strong and versatile actors on Cincy Shakes’ stage and beyond, which makes it a delight to see them off of their leashes and yukking it up in a bawdy and lower-brow way.” And “together they seem to have a great deal of fun onstage, and their energy is infectious…the actors’ unflagging and inventive energy is more than enough to keep you entertained.”  The Cincinnati Enquirer agreed, “with a cast like this…All of them are inveterate laugh-chasers. If there is a laugh to be extracted from the material, they are very likely to find it.”

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) runs July 20 – August 11 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM, as well as Saturday August 11 at 2:00 PM.  Preview performances are July 18 and 19 at 7:30.

On Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5, bring your younger kids (4+) for artist-led childcare DURING the performance! The “Playdate” program is only $15 and free for subscribers. The option to add this program will be available as you are buying tickets for either of these show dates. Activities will range from Storytime to theatre games and crafts. Share the great benefits of CSC’s programming with your children: Playdate will style activities to correspond with each production, so even your youngest can join in the discussion on the ride home!

Single ticket prices range from $14-$54.  Previews on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19 are $30.  Advance student tickets are only $28 and day-of Student Rush tickets are $14 and may be purchased thirty minutes before a show with a valid student ID if available. This production is not part of this season’s subscription package but subscribers receive 15% off tickets and pay no fees. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the CSC Box Office at 513.381.BARD (2273) ext. 1, or go online at http://www.cincyshakes.com.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions Welcomes Madcap Education Center Director

MCP_Blaire Bartish

Blaire M. H. Bartish.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions announced today the appointment of Blaire M. H. Bartish to its management team. Bartish will serve as Director of the forthcoming Madcap Education Center, a new $4 million arts education facility in Westwood for one of the region’s fastest growing arts organizations.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions is the production and management company for the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts, the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater, Madcap Puppets and the Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre teen summer program.

For CLP, Bartish will oversee the opening and operation of the Madcap Education Center, including developing class and camp programs and special events, recruiting and hiring teaching artists, coordinating the performance schedule in the center’s performance hall and managing financial affairs and revenue development for the center.

Bartish has worked in arts/culture education throughout her career. Before coming to CLP, she worked as Manager of School and Public Programs for the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton. She’s also worked at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and as a public school teacher in Illinois.

She’s also well acquainted with the arts. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education with a Minor in Dance and Theater from Ohio Wesleyan University. She has also completed coursework (and is writing her final capstone paper) for her Masters in Education in Educational Policy Studies and Research from DePaul University.

“I am thrilled to join the CLP family and be able to share my love of performing arts with the Cincinnati community in general and Westwood specifically,” Bartish said. “I started movement classes as a 5-year old in the Chicago Park District and it totally changed the course of my life. I am hoping to do the same with the youth and adults in Greater Cincinnati.”

The Madcap Education Center will be home to exciting life-size puppet performances, a jumping off point for show tours but also a hub for classes, camps and performing arts education opportunities – in the heart of Westwood’s revitalized business district.

The Madcap Education Center will host:

  • children’s programming in its 124-seat theater
  • one-on-one vocal and instrument training in its small studio spaces
  • dance classes for a variety of skill levels in its two dance studios
  • acting and improv classes
  • puppet making and other arts/crafts classes in its art studio space
  • distance learning programming in its technology center
  • birthday parties
  • senior arts classes opportunities
  • neighborhood meetings and special events
  • the new home base for Madcap Puppets touring operations

The Education Center will be located across the street from Westwood Town Hall where CLP was born as Cincinnati Young People’s Theater in 1982.

Bartish and her husband Dave reside in White Oak with their son Louie.
