Imagined Pride and Prejudice sequel lets middle sister Mary take center stage in romantic comedy beginning Oct. 13

CINCINNATI – What happens to the Bennet sisters after the events in Pride and Prejudice? Jane Austen fans can find out for themselves in the romantic comedy MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY, beginning at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Oct. 13. The Marx Theatre production runs through Nov. 10 (Opening night is Oct. 18.)

An imagined sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the play returns to the beloved world of the Bennet family in a production that will please Austen fans and newcomers alike.

“Fans will delight in the new situation of the characters that they have so come to love; Austen newbies will find a world brimming with froth and wit and characters filled with life,” says Blake Robison, artistic director of the Playhouse.

At the end of Pride and Prejudice, Austen has her heroine Lizzie Bennet (the new Mrs. Darcy) write her family and invite them to Pemberley for Christmas. Playwrights Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon used this invitation as a springboard to imagine a rich story filled with the wit, humor and heart of the original. Their love for the material is immediately evident, as the characters encounter each other again and strive to find love, acceptance and happiness.

While comforted by the company of books and her piano, middle sister Mary has grown tired of her role as the dutiful daughter and dreams of her own independence. When the Bennets gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy for the holidays, an unexpected encounter brings about the possibility of an intellectual match and maybe even love for Mary.

In the hands of Gunderson and Melcon, Miss Bennet sparkles with lively wit that’s true to Austen’s style, as well as a contemporary sense of female empowerment. Co-author Melcon has described Mary as, “smart, capable, awkward — maybe a little bit nerdy — and she is rejecting the traditional values of the society that she is living in and forging her own path.”

Director Eleanor Holdridge explains, “Austen fans will be able to enjoy the more adult stories of their favorite heroines, as Jane comes to terms with impending parenthood and Lizzie strives to turn the august and somewhat stodgy shades of Pemberley into a home brimming with life and love.”

Playhouse audiences will be familiar with co-playwright Gunderson’s female-centric The Revolutionists, a comedy about four bold women set during the French Revolution, which made its world premiere in the Shelterhouse in 2016, and was directed by Holdridge. The play has gone on to receive numerous, successful productions around the country.

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ohio’s only two-time Tony Award-winning theatre, boasts productions that are both nationally recognized and locally crafted. The 2018-2019 season includes productions featuring actors, directors and designers who regularly work on and off Broadway and at other leading professional theatres across the country. Music Hall – Springer Auditorium

“Black Violin upends cultural and musical stereotypes…an unexpected blend of classically trained musicianship and hip-hop beats and inventiveness.” – The Miami Herald

“Their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” – NPR

CINCINNATI, OH – This January, Black Violin hit the stage with their new 2019 Impossible Tour with over forty high-energy shows scheduled into the summer. The band makes its much-anticipated return to Cincinnati at Music Hall’s Springer Auditorium on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 7:30 PM as part of the Cincinnati Arts Association’s 2018-19 Season.

Tickets are on sale now at www.CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center and Music Hall Ticket Offices. A student ticket price of $15 is available in select seating locations. Group discount tickets for 10 or more are available by calling (513) 977-4157.

Black Violin spent the latter half of 2018 touring, writing, and recording new music. The Impossible Tour began shortly after wrapping up their successful 2018 Classical Boom Tourwhich consisted of more than ninety concerts and included back-to-back sold out performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

Black Violin is currently writing and recording their next studio album, expected to be released late this summer. The band recently released their track “Dreamer,” and shortly after, released an accompanying video. Black Violin’s last record, Stereotypes, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart. NPR praised the album and band, saying “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.”

Black Violin is composed of both classically-trained violist Wil Baptiste and violinist Kev Marcus. The duo, from South Florida, began playing together in their high school orchestra class. After attending separate colleges, Kev and Wil reunited and decided to combine their classical training and love for hip-hop music, establishing a distinguished, genre-bending sound that has often been described as “classical boom.”

Creative collaborations include Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, Lil Wayne, and Alicia Keys.  In 2016, Black Violin composed music for FOX’s hit TV series Pitch and the group has made appearances on HBO’s Ballers, The Tonight Show, The Wendy Williams Show, The Ellen Show, and the 2016 Heisman Trophy Presentation on ESPN.

Black Violin are advocates for educational outreach and were announced as Turnaround Artists for Mary B. Bethune Elementary School in their hometown of Broward County, FL. Turnaround Arts, a national education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, infuses arts into struggling schools to support overall reform efforts. Founded by President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2012, the program partners schools with music instrument grants, arts supplies, professional development, and musicals, and pairs each school with an artist to provide mentorship, inspiration, and support for the school’s journey in the program. Turnaround Artists include Elton John, Edward Norton, and Yo-Yo Ma, among other highly acclaimed members of the arts community. Additionally, Black Violin continues to perform for more than 100,000 students annually throughout North America and Europe.

Black Violin’s Impossible Tour will spread the message that anything is possible and there are no limits to what one can achieve, regardless of circumstance. The focus is positivity and encouragement. As Wil Baptiste puts it, “When you come to a Black Violin concert, there are so many people in the audience experiencing something together. To me, that’s what our show does, it brings people together. Not only that, you’re being inspired, you’re being uplifted, you’re able to see something you probably have never seen before.”

Satirical Comedy THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR Opens CCM Mainstage Series

CCM_logo

CCM Acting presents Nikolai Gogol’s THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR on Oct. 3 (preview)-7, 2018 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now.

CINCINNATI, OH — A good satire bites when it is written, says director Richard Hess, but a great satire withstands the test of time and continues to bite for future generations. He is referring to political comedy THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, which opens the 2018-19 Mainstage Series at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music on Oct. 3, 2018.

Written by Russian dramatist Nikolai Gogol in 1834 and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher in 2008, THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR is a hilarious reminder of the terrifying timelessness of bureaucracy and buffoonery. When the locals of a small town learn that an undercover government inspector is coming for a surprise visit, a case of mistaken identity sends the whole village spiraling into a world of panic and greed.

The play was originally presented with the consent of Russian Emperor Nicholas I, but it is said that “he later regretted his tolerance,” says Hess, Chair of CCM Acting. “THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR is a classic because it was funny then and it is funny now.” Hess adds. “Our production is set in an 1836 that feels uncannily like 2018.”

Hatcher’s adaptation premiered off-Broadway in 2017 to great acclaim. The New York Times called it a “buoyant” production that “generates the kind of collective enthusiasm in its audience that you associate with home-team football games.”

After choosing serious dramas for CCM Acting’s Mainstage Series for the past few years, Hess wanted to produce a show that makes audiences laugh long and laugh hard. He says he laughed during every rehearsal with CCM Acting students, and he hopes audiences will fill the theater with laughter at every performance.
