The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Presents CASPER THE FRIENDLY MUSICAL

A world-premiere production at the Taft Theatre this October!

CINCINNATI:  The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s world-premiere of CASPER THE FRIENDLY MUSICAL flies into the Taft Theatre October 12-October 21, 2019 and kicks off TCT’s 100th birthday celebration season!

In TCT’s world-premiere musical adaptation, everyone’s favorite friendly ghost and his three uncles live in the family mansion. Fifty years after their lives were cut short in a lightning storm, Magdalena, their former maid, re-enters their (after)lives! Now a famous Reality TV Host, she’s looking for the mansion’s deed and believes it will lead her to a “great treasure.” She hosts a live million-dollar treasure hunt in the mansion. It’s up to Casper and his new friends, the contestants, to save the mansion and discover the greatest treasure of all!

Ideal for ages 4 and up.

School performances of CASPER THE FRIENDLY MUSICAL will be held October 15-18 and October 21, 2019 during the daytime hours.

The sensory-friendly performance of CASPER THE FRIENDLY MUSICAL on October 16 is intended for individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as children (and adults) with other special needs who may benefit.  To create a sensory-friendly performance, the show is performed in a welcoming, supportive environment for those with sensory challenges.  Slight adjustments to lighting and sound are made and effects such as fog, strobes, and lights that extend into the audience are minimalized.  A downloadable Social Narrative (in Word format) is made available on the TCT website one week before the performance.  At the theater, TCT provides an area staffed by specialists in the field where patrons can take a break from the performance if necessary, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has trained staff on hand.

Exciting 2020 ‘Summer Classics Season’ Announced for Warsaw Federal Incline Theater

Cincinnati Landmark Productions announced this week its four-show 2020 Summer Classics Season at the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater

The 2020 Summer Classics Season, presented by TriHealth, includes:

  • NEWSIES – April 22 – May 17, 2020
  • A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM – June 3 – 28, 2020
  • JERRY’S GIRLS – July 8 – August 2, 2020
  • CAROUSEL – August 19 – September 13, 2020

“We broke our own attendance records with our Summer Classics Season in 2018, but wouldnt you know it – we did it again in 2019,” said Tim Perrino, Executive Artistic Director for Cincinnati Landmark Productions. “We can’t wait to present these four great titles in 2020 and keep this amazing momentum going for years to come!”

The Warsaw Federal Incline Theater is the purpose-built, 229-seat performing arts center and parking garage in the Incline District in East Price Hill. Located at the corner of Matson Place and West 8th Street, the $6 million project opened on June 3, 2015.

Subscriptions for the 2020 Summer Classics Season – only $104 – are now on sale.

Subscribers to the 2019 Summer Classics Season will have their seats held for renewal until March 2, 2020. All seats not renewed by that time will be released. Tickets to individual shows go on sale on March 23, 2020.

The Warsaw Federal Incline Theater is programmed year-round by Cincinnati Landmark Productions, culminating in over 120 show nights. In addition to the Summer Classics Season, the venue hosts the three-show District Series season (September to May), an edgier slate of productions designed as an alternative to the concurrent Marquee season at the Covedale Center.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions has been serving the West Side for over 35 years – first through its Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre program and then through its ownership and management of the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts in West Price Hill.

NEWSIES

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right! Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a nonstop laughfest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful, but slow-witted, courtesan named Philia for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors and a showgirl or two.

JERRY’S GIRLS

A beautiful musical revue! Jerry Herman has always put the “larger-than-life” female characters in his shows center stage. There’s Dolly Gallagher Levi of Hello, Dolly!, Auntie Mame Dennis of Mame, Countess Aurelia of Dear World, Mabel Normand of Mack and Mabel. And female impersonator ZaZa of La Cage Aux Folles. So it is fitting that in Jerry’s Girls, the powerhouse women are center stage again. The all-women cast affectionately celebrate Jerry’s special gift for writing songs that capture the true spirit of the American musical theatre. A gorgeous, moving two-hour musical entertainment of glamour, optimism, love, melody, and women.

In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow captivates and marries a naïve millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent “up there.” Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day, 15 years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager. Her father’s reputation as a thief and bully has haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. A powerhouse musical and one of theatre’s all-time classics.

Nomadic Performance Initiative Inaugural Production of THE CHILDREN’S HOUR Opens Sept. 5

NPI_logoNomadic Performance Initiative Invites Audiences to “Wonder With Purpose” During THE CHILDREN’S HOUR

Set in a fictional New England town in the 1930s, THE CHILDREN’S HOUR tells the story of two women who are unjustly accused of homosexual activity by one of their students. The outraged community quickly withdraws all of their students, causing a witch hunt that ultimately forces the school to close. A relevant and haunting reminder of the power of words, lies and intolerance.

Past productions of THE CHILDREN’S HOUR featured artists such as Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, James Garner, Elisabeth Moss and Keira Knightley.

The cast includes: Blair Godshall as Martha Dobie, Katrina Reynolds as Lily Mortar, Tony Newton as Joseph Cardin, Jennifer Trier as Amelia Tilford, Lexi Rigsby as Mary Tilford, Kayla Vogel as Karen Wright, Katie Keller as Rosalie Wells, Erin East as Peggy Rogers, Brooke Singleton as Agatha, Emily Keller as Evelyn Munn, Emma Wolfe as Lois Fisher, TBA as Helen Burton, TBA as Catherine & Ethan Glahn as Grocery Boy.

Cincinnati Opera and CCM Opera’s Opera Fusion: New Works Presents CASTOR AND PATIENCE

Funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the workshop offers the combined resources of Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music to further the development of new American opera 

CINCINNATI, OH—Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) are pleased to announce that their groundbreaking joint program, Opera Fusion: New Works, will host a residency for the new opera Castor and Patience from August 26 through September 4, 2019, in Cincinnati.

Castor and Patience, with music by composer Gregory Spears and libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and former U.S. poet laureate Tracy K. Smith, has been commissioned by Cincinnati Opera in honor of its 100th anniversary season and will receive its world premiere as part of the company’s 2020 Summer Festival. It will be Spears’s second work for the company, following the extraordinary critical and popular success of Fellow Travelers, with librettist Greg Pierce, in 2016.

During the Opera Fusion: New Works residency, the work’s creative team will collaborate with singers and musicians for a 10-day workshop, culminating in a public performance of excerpts on September 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Music Hall’s Wilks Studio.

Smith, tells the story of African American cousins who find themselves at odds over the fate of a historic parcel of land they have inherited in the American South. According to Smith, “It’s 2008, and Patience is fighting to stave off overzealous developers. Castor has a ballooning mortgage to contend with and is hoping to sell his share of the land. But if they’re going to get anywhere as a family, they must first learn to see past their differing allegiances and trust one another. Castor and Patience is the story not just of a single family or even a particular geography, but of America’s warring tensions between reckoning with the hard facts of history and racing blindly forward toward the dream of progress.”

ABOUT OPERA FUSION: NEW WORKS
Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW) is a partnership between Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) dedicated to fostering the development of new American operas. This collaboration is jointly led by Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera, and Robin Guarino, Professor of Opera at CCM. OF:NW offers composers or composer/librettist teams the opportunity to workshop an opera during a residency in Cincinnati. Tony award Winning Musical Fun Home, August 31 — September 28, 2019

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati opens its 2019-2020 arts season with the regional premiere of Fun Home – a memoir musical based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, with lyrics and book by Lisa Kron and music by Jeanine Tesori. In this highly anticipated musical, Alison Bechdel’s coming-of-age memoir depicts the evolution of her young life, her identity, and the secrets that defined her family and her upbringing. Playing August 31-September 28, 2019. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers.

Hailed as one of Broadway’s most original musicals and the winner of 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this is the groundbreaking story inspired by the best-selling graphic memoir. Alison’s father, Bruce, was an enigmatic, brilliant man whose secrets defined her family and her life. Bruce taught high school English, ran the family’s funeral home business, and was obsessed with restoring their old house. When he dies unexpectedly, Alison digs deeply into her childhood memories to explore and unravel the mysteries of her childhood and the surprising secrets that shaped her life.

“I believe that this show is an essential piece of theatre – it addresses universal values in terms of family, forgiveness, and understanding, as well as our ability to love and accept ourselves as the individuals that we are,” said director D. Lynn Meyers. “Jeanine Tesori’s music has been an enormous influence on my work, having directed Violet here twice. Once I heard she was doing a new musical I had to do it, and I’ve waited four years for the rights to Fun Home. I believe Cincinnati needs to share Alison’s story, and with the remarkable cast we have to do that it will certainly be something everyone needs to see.”

About the Cast

Charlie Clark (Bruce Bechdel) was last seen at Ensemble Theatre in Violet in 2016, where his credits include Next to Normal, Rapture, Blister, Burn, Hands on a Hardbody, Luna Gale, and Next Fall, among others. Some of his other local credits include Church Girls, Take Me Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, On Golden Pond, Carousel, Love’s Labour’s Lost, See What I Wanna See, The Full Monty, and Sunday in the Park with George. His Chicago credits include Company, Merrily We Roll Along, Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Sweeney Todd. His Twin Cities credits include Guys and Dolls and Mary Poppins.

Sara Mackie (Helen Bechdel) is an alumna of the Wright State Acting BFA Program. She has performed with ETC in many productions since 1999 including Hands on a Hardbody, all three Wonderette iterations, Rabbit Hole, and Mauritius, among others. Some of her favorite credits include An Act of God, Twelfth Night, and Family Ties, Human Race Theatre; Pump Boys and Dinettes, The Carnegie; and Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune, Falcon Theatre. Ms. Mackie appears briefly in the feature films The Public and the soon-to-be-released Dark Waters.

Natalie Bird (Alison) makes her Ensemble Theatre debut with this production. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Wright State University where she appeared in States of Independence, directed by Tina Land. Some of her New York theatre credits include The Top Job, off-Broadway with Vital Theatre Company; The Cherry Orchard, Columbia Stages; Edward II, Isle of Shoals; Hee-Haw: It’s a Wonderful Lie, Levin Productions; and Variety Show on a Weekday, Nuyorican Poets Café. Some of her regional credits include Lizzie with Human Race Theatre Company and The Christians and In the Next Room: The Vibrator Play with AthensWest Theatre Company. Her film, television, and web credits include The Bourne Legacy, Unforgettable, and Dominatrix Breakroom.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati also welcomes the following performers in their ETC debuts: McKenna James Farmer (Young Alison), Emily Fink (Medium Alison), Max Meyers (Roy/Mark/Pete/Bobby Jeremy), Jude Walker (Joan), Henry Weghorst (John Bechdel), and Espen Wells-Jordan (Christian Bechdel).
