Know Theatre’s 22nd Season Continues with US Premiere of IN THE NIGHT TIME (before the sun rises) by Nina Segal

KTC_NightTimePosterJanuary 17th- February 8th

When the world comes crashing down around you,
how do you make it through the night?

Following its London premiere in 2016, Nina Segal’s riveting new drama In the Night Time (before the sun rises) makes it U.S. debut on the Know Theatre Mainstage this January:

Somewhere – not here, but somewhere – it is night time.

A baby cries. A bottle breaks. A window smashes. And deep into the night, a couple we meet as simply “Man” and “Woman” try to soothe their screaming newborn back to sleep.

As the hours grow longer, the world becomes elastic around them, and the horrors that scar our planet threatens to crash into the baby’s room.

In the longest, darkest hours of the night, when sleep deprivation robs you of your mooring, you begin to wonder – how could we have brought a child into such a wounded world?

And how can we find the hope, together, to carry on?

A finalist for the 2016 Yale Drama Prize, In the Night Time (before the sun rises)  was first staged at London’s Gate Theatre, and makes its US premiere right here at the Know.

Called “raw and restlessand “visceral from start to finish by critics, Nina Segal’s unflinching script echoes the styles of Sarah Kane or Caryl Churchill, but with a contemporary feel all her own. And though Segal is unafraid to take us into the darker stretches of the human imagination, this story’s ultimate message of hope at the end of a long night will resonate with anyone seeking the light in these dark times.

To take on this intense experimental drama, Know Theatre is proud to bring back University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s Brant Russell to direct.

We asked him what about In the Night Time (before the sun rises) resonates with him, as both an artist and a parent – and this is what he had to say:

So, I’m a dad and I also like to think that I’m a conscientious person that strives to be ethical.

This play not only asks the question of why would we bring newborn life into such a broken place, but also: does bringing new lives into this broken place make it more broken?

In what ways are we culpable as parents? Are we condemning the next generation by creating them?

The Know is delighted to showcase two of Cincinnati’s most versatile performers to bring In The Night Time’s struggling young couple and the big ideas with which they’ll wrestle into vivid focus.

Straight from their hilarious performances in Know’s record-breaking run of Puffs, we welcome back Elizabth Chinn Molloy and Brandon Burton to show you a whole new side to their dramatic talents.

Before Puffs, Elizabeth Chinn Molloy’s work had previously appeared on the Know MainStage in 2019’s Mercury and 2017’s SuperTrue. You may also have caught her work in Serials!,the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and various play readings in the Know Underground. This time, she takes on the challenging role of “Woman,” a new mother whose fears and doubts begin to metastasize under the pressure of a sleepless child. Is it ethical or right to bring a child into our modern world?

Joining Elizabeth once again is Brandon Burton as “Man.” Currently onstage as math magician Oliver Rivers in Puffs, you might remember him as the hilarious Castle Guard in Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood and Islington & Lord Rat Speaker in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. This time, he tackles the gritty and emotional role of a new father grown delirious as he and his wife desperately attempt to get their newborn to sleep.

In our bleakest moments, we turn to each other to reconnect and rediscover the hope we’ve lost – because, sometimes, the only way to make it through the night is together.

If you’re seeking a new dawn, too, don’t miss In the Night Time (Before the Sun Rises), running January 17th- February 8th, only at Your Theatrical Playground.

CINCINNATI STORYTELLING FESTIVAL Brings Nationally-Acclaimed Storytelling Talent to Queen City

CSF_ 2020 logo(CINCINNATI, OHIO)  Paul Strickland has been a Cincinnati favorite for years, and has traveled with his beloved Trailer Park Trilogy and other storytelling shows to fringe festivals all over North America. He’s also a nationally acclaimed storyteller, and will be taking his stories to festivals like the Paris Storytelling Festival, Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, and more. But why is Paul travelling to tell his stories? Why not bring his favorite storytellers here?

Madcap Education Center and other local arts organizations have asked Paul Strickland to help them do just that–bring more nationally recognized storytellers right here to Cincinnati, while championing local Cincinnati favorites at the same time! February 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2020 will see Cincinnati’s first Storytelling Festival.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

A nationally renowned storyteller and five time champion of the West Virginia Liars’ Contest, Bil’s outrageous, humorous tall-tales and witty stories have earned the appreciation of listeners of all ages and from all walks of life.

Though a champion liar, his stories often contain morsels of truth which shed light on universal themes. Be it a hunting trip, a funeral, or a visit to the dentist, Bil can find the humor in any situation. Lepp explains that while his stories may not be completely true, they are always honest.

Bil is the author of six books and sixteen audio collections. His first children’s book, The King of Little Things, won the PEN Steven Kroll Award for Picture Book Writing, received a Kirkus Starred review, and favorable reviews from The Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, The School Library Journal and other publications. His hilarious and heart-felt tall tales have won “Best of Fest” seven times at Fringe Festivals in the U.S. and Canada. BUDDY HOLLY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY Plans to Rock Cincinnati Playhouse

Jukebox Musical Memoir Coming to Cincinnati on Jan. 18

CINCINNATI – Everyday, it’s a getting; closer to Jan. 18, when BUDDY HOLLY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY begins previews at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. The original jukebox musical featuring 20 of Holly’s timeless hits runs through Feb. 16. The official opening night is Jan. 23.

Written by Alan Janes, BUDDY HOLLY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY chronicles Holly’s meteoric 18-month journey to fame as one of the pioneers of rock and roll, who influenced The Beatles, Brice Springsteen, Elton John and countless others. The energetic cast portrays Holly in all of his stages: from his country roots in Texas to his songwriting in the 1950s, and his final concert before the plane ride that took his life, “the day the music died.”

Seven musician-actors will perform Holly’s own hits to help tell the story, with live performances of familiar tunes like “It’s So Easy to Fall in Love,” “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Not Fade Away,” “Oh Boy!” and “Everyday,” as well as Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” The result is an experience that’s half-theatre, half-electrifying rock concert. In the words of the Chicago Tribune, the show “sends people out of the theatre on an unstoppable high.”

Tony Award-nominated director Marcia Milgrom Dodge will bring her prior direction of BUDDY HOLLY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY and will build on that experience in the Playhouse production.

“We are referencing the original recordings as much as possible,” says Dodge. “Andy Christopher, who plays Buddy and also serves as our Music Director, and I are devoted to making the show sound as authentic as possible.”

Dodge plans to keep the focus of the musical on Holly’s incredible story and legendary songs. She explains, “I wanted to get to the music quickly, so we are always living in Buddy’s artistry.”

CAST
Andy Christopher (Buddy Holly/Guitar); Joe Cosmo Cogen (Jerry Allison/Drums); Jayson Elliott (Hipockets Duncan/The Big Bopper and others/Guitar/Harmonica/Bass); Ryan Jagru (Tommy Allsop/Ritchie Valens and others/Guitar); Shayna Nicole Small (Apollo Headliner/Maria Elena Santiago and others/Keyboard): Byron St. Cyr (Apollo Headliner and others/Saxaphone and Guiro); Spiff Wiegand (Joe B. BUDDY HOLLY: THE BUDDY HOLLY story is recommended for ages 12 and up. Buddy’s thick-framed glasses may seem nerdy and innocent today, but his songs about teenage romance, lust and heartbreak were edgy for their time period. Lyrics contain mild sexual innuendo, and there are other mature themes.
