Of Mice and Men to Open at Footlighters, Inc. February 13, 2020

FLI_Of Mice and Men logoFootlighters, Inc. proudly presents the third show of its 2019-2020 season, the classic Of Mice and Men.

John Steinbeck’s classic tale features two migrant workers, drifter George and his mentally challenged friend Lennie, arriving at a ranch to work for enough money to pursue their dream of owning their own farm. Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. It’s Lennie’s obsession with things soft and cuddly that have made George cautious about who the gentle giant, with his brute strength, associates with. But when the unexpected happens, their dreams take a drastic and tragic turn.

Of Mice and Men features the return of award-winning veteran actor Bill Hartnett to the Footlighters stage. Bill was last seen onstage at the Stained Glass Theatre in 2013’s Tuesdays with Morrie, but Bill’s career spans over 40 years in the Cincinnati area. Together with his late wife Ellie Shepherd, he has won over 60 Association of Community Theatre/Ohio Community Theatre Association awards, and in 2008, they were both inducted into the CEA Theater Hall of Fame.

In 1987, the group bought the Salem United Methodist Church in Newport and transformed it into The Stained Glass Theatre. The theater is on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a Kentucky landmark. In September of 2018, Footlighters added an ADA ramp to the front of their building to complement the elevator installed in September of 2017, allowing access for all patrons with limited mobility.

Premier of LILY BLOSSOMS, OR MODERN SUBDIVISION ZONING IN THE PRESENT DAY, at the Aronoff Center, January 14

CPI_Ghost Girl and Lily Blossoms logoThe Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative New Voices series presents the premier of LILY BLOSSOMS, OR MODERN SUBDIVISION ZONING IN THE PRESENT DAY by Greg Hatfield, in a staged reading, on Tuesday, January 14th, 2020, at 7:30 p.m., at the Fifth Third Bank Theater in the Aronoff Center for the Arts, 650 Walnut Street, in Downtown Cincinnati.

This sophisticated comedy is set in New York City in 1954.  Lily Palmer and Theodore Barkley, the star writers for Manhattan magazine, are the very best of friends.  Hating their present assignments, they decide to mix things up a bit to the consternation of their editor.  Barkley has also been moonlighting as an actor and gets an offer from a movie studio in Hollywood.  This could break up the team and his marriage.

Cincinnati community theater lovers will recognize this cast:  Cathy Jo Judge, Darren Lee, Peggy Allen and Chris Bishop, as all are very familiar faces throughout the city, working consistently on plays and musicals with every theater company.

The playwright and director, Greg Hatfield, is no slouch, either.  For years, he was a writer, actor and director in Dr. Browndog’s Monkeytime, a theatrical comedy troupe in Cincinnati.  His other plays have been performed by companies in Cincinnati, Kansas City, Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Tickets are now on sale at https://www.cincinnatiarts.org/events/detail/cpi-ghost-girl or the Aronoff Box Office.  Tickets are $10.00.  Another play, THE GHOST GIRL by Ariel Rodgers, is included in the ticket price.

Springboro Community Theatre Present CHARLOTTE’S WEB

SCT_Charlottes WebSpringboro, OH – The Children’s Literature Association named this “the best American children’s book of the past two hundred years,” and Joseph Robinette, working with the advice of E.B. White, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling and utterly practical theatrical presentation.

All the enchanting characters are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.”

Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes, “Some pig.” It’s the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte. BLUES FOR AN ALABAMA SKY to Ring In 2020 at Falcon Theatre

Falcon Theatre’s third production of its 30th anniversary season is Pearl Cleage’s BLUES FOR AN ALABAMA SKY. The play is a brutally honest and candid examination of an array of issues–including race, gender, sexuality, and cultural intolerance–in the historical context of the Harlem Renaissance and the early years of the Great Depression. The production, directed by Torie Wiggins, opens January 24, 2020.

The story is set in Harlem, New York in 1930. The euphoria and nonstop party of the Roaring Twenties have given way to the harsh realities of rampant joblessness and Jim Crow laws. The tale takes on the theme of hopeful dreams in hopeless times; it chronicles the aspirations and adversity of five characters whose lives tragically converge during an eight-week period. The names and spirit of Harlem Renaissance artists such as Langston Hughes and Josephine Baker hover throughout the play, but the story focuses on struggling artists whose dreams must be put on hold to face economic survival.

Director Wiggins says Blues has been on her bucket list of plays to direct ever since she played the lead role of Angel in a production at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in the 1990s. “This is a story that needs to be told,” says Ms. Wiggins. “It’s a story that resonates with themes that are as relevant as they have ever been. Culture. Relationships. Sexism. Racism. And features some of the most memorable characters that audiences will ever encounter.”

Ms. Wiggins also says that she is excited about working in Falcon’s intimate space for the first time. The stage and its proximity to the audience will be a real challenge for her actors. “This is a theater that was made for actors and for this play,” she says. “When I first walked into the theater, I thought, ‘Wow. The actors will really need to be camera-ready from the opening curtain.”

The Chicago Tribune calls Blues for an Alabama Sky “ebullient, musical, (and) highly enjoyable.” The Guardian says the play “…offers a riveting picture of Harlem at a moment of historic transition.” The Washington Post calls it “…lively and heartfelt.”

Falcon’s production features Bryana Bentley as Angel, Keith Holland as Sam, R. DeAndre Smith as Guy, Elizabeth Taylor as Delia, and Elliot Young as Leland. Performances are at 8 PM on January 24, 25, 30, and 31 and on February 1, 6, 7 and 8.  Tickets prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances. Visit falcontheater.net for tickets.

CINCINNATI, OH (December 18, 2019)—Liz Kathman Grubow, president of Cincinnati Opera’s board of trustees, today announced that Christopher Milligan has been named the next Harry Fath General Director & CEO of the company. Milligan’s tenure begins March 2, 2020.

A respected arts administrator with more than 25 years of industry experience, Milligan is currently Managing Director of Cincinnati Opera. Having joined the company in 1997, Milligan brings to the role a successful track record of creative and collaborative leadership, a passion for the art form, and a deep respect for Cincinnati Opera, its stakeholders, and its community. As General Director & CEO, he will lead all aspects of the company’s operations, including: artistic and production management, financial management, fundraising, marketing, education, community engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Milligan’s appointment comes at a historic moment for Cincinnati Opera, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020. The company has earned a reputation as a leader in the industry for its exceptional artistic achievements, its commitment to inclusion and public engagement, and its robust fiscal health.

Milligan will succeed Patricia K. Beggs, who previously announced her retirement after 35 years with the company. Upon Milligan’s appointment in March 2020, Beggs will transition to the role of General Director Emerita and will continue with the company through the finale of its 2020 season (June 18-August 1, 2020). Today’s announcement concludes a nine-month international search, chaired by Grubow with participation from the Opera’s board, staff, the Cincinnati Opera Guild, Center Stage Board Associates, and community members, and conducted in partnership with the management consulting firm Arts Consulting Group.

Said Milligan, “I have spent much of my career with Cincinnati Opera, committed to advancing an art form I believe makes our community more humane, connected, and creative. Even today, I am just as excited about this storied cultural institution’s potential as when I started with the company in 1997. I am grateful to Liz Grubow, the search committee, and the entire Cincinnati Opera board, to my colleagues on the staff, and especially to Patty Beggs, my boss and mentor for the past twenty-two years. It’s an honor and privilege to succeed her. I will strive to be a champion for opera that is soul-stirring, adventurous, ennobling, and accessible. Our company and our community deserve nothing less.”

“We are thrilled to name Chris Milligan as the new General Director & CEO of Cincinnati Opera,” said Grubow. “He has the institutional knowledge of the company and its ethos, and his collaborative leadership style will harness the incredible depth and breadth of talent we have on our staff, in our community and in the opera world. He possesses an unwavering belief that opera can transform lives and touch souls, and he will be relentless in championing the company’s efforts toward producing great work and enhancing its accessibility for all audiences.”

She added, “This search was exhaustive and comprehensive in scope. I can’t thank enough the stellar search committee, staff, board, the Opera Guild, and Center Stage Board Associates, as well as Arts Consulting Group, for their dedication and engagement throughout the search process.”

Said Beggs, “Chris is an integral part of the fabric of Cincinnati Opera, and over our years of working together, he has proven time and again his capability for both visionary leadership and thoughtful guidance through everyday challenges. Chris is a true believer when it comes to the transformational power of art and opera, and I am confident he will brilliantly lead this remarkable cultural treasure into its bright future.”

Marc A. Scorca, President and CEO of OPERA America, praised the company’s selection. “I’ve had the good fortune of working with Chris directly on several industry-wide initiatives,” said Scorca, “and his imprint is on many of the company’s most innovative endeavors. Not only is Chris passionate about opera, but he also believes in pushing the boundaries of what opera can be, and in striving toward authentic connections with all audiences. I look forward to our continued partnership.”

Milligan will work closely with Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director, to advance the company’s artistic vision. Said Mirageas, “I am thrilled at the prospect of working with Chris as General Director & CEO. From my first visit to Cincinnati in 2004 while I was still a consultant to the company, Chris impressed me with his deep knowledge of the art form. He combines this with a keen sense of what it takes to make opera a financial success. In Chris, I believe we have the ideal balance of passion and savvy to take Cincinnati Opera well into its second century.”
