Cincinnati Ballet Announces Updates to the 2020-2021 Season

CB_2020-2021 Season logoReimagined season includes new choreography and classic favorites

CINCINNATI, OH (August 10, 2020) – Cincinnati Ballet is excited to announce our modified 2020-2021 Season. While this unexpected schedule looks different than first envisioned, it is a season of surprises sure to delight dance lovers in the region. When the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the remainder of the 2019-2020 Season in March and April, Cincinnati Ballet did not anticipate programming changes well into our upcoming season. However, Cincinnati Ballet’s dedicated staff pivoted quickly to reimagine the 2020-2021 season with varied performance options. “The health and safety of our dancers, staff, patrons, and community remain our top priority,” said Scott Altman, Cincinnati Ballet CEO. “As we continue to navigate the unique challenges of social distancing, our commitment to health and safety has guided us as we created a season that delivers the world-class dance you expect from Cincinnati Ballet. We have had to make some difficult decisions, but we know, thanks to our community’s deep commitment to the arts and Cincinnati Ballet, we are safeguarding the future of our organization.” Cincinnati Ballet has adapted the 2020-2021 Season based on recommendations from government and health officials and in line with sister organizations both regionally and nationally.

Cincinnati Ballet invites you to come celebrate dance and our vibrant community next month as we kick off the season with a free, socially distanced production in partnership with Cincinnati Parks at the P & G Pavilion September 25-27. This program will feature the return of our dancers with outdoor performances showcasing selections of favorite solos and pas de deux from our rich repertoire. In November, Cincinnati Ballet will present an intimate workshop performance. “Right now, our artists are busy creating thoughtful pieces for this performance,” said Artistic Director Victoria Morgan. “Our dancers and artistic staff are developing a celebratory program. The return of this art form to an indoor stage with audiences and dancers socially distanced will proudly highlight the talents of your Cincinnati Ballet artists, as dancers, as choreographers, and innovators of our time. While the world is an unsettled place, we are focused and moving forward in our mission to share the love and healing power of dance with our community.”  As we move into December, keeping in mind appropriate social distancing, we will offer a re-imagined Nutcracker presented by Frisch’s Big Boy in an hour-long program in the Music Hall Ballroom, December 17-23.

Our second half of the season begins in a NEW and surprising way. For the first time in our history, The Kaplan New Works Series moves from the Jarson-Kaplan Theater at Aronoff Center to Springer Auditorium at Music Hall. This audience favorite will replace Jewels previously scheduled in February. To highlight the intimate setting for these contemporary world premieres, Cincinnati Ballet will perform New Works like never seen before in front of the proscenium, performing in the space you would typically see Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra musicians perform. New Works as always continues to highlight the raw, powerful athleticism of dance. In this series we reflect on these unique times, addressing today’s challenges with gravity, humor, and hope.  To celebrate springtime, we have shifted our Family Series regional premiere of Snow White from February to April. This treasured fairytale will showcase Cincinnati Ballet Second Company and Otto M. Budig Academy students and for the first time, will feature live actors narrating the story, April 8-18. April will also feature a mixed-repertoire program, Bold Moves Plus. The anchor will be the return of Ohad Naharin’s wildly popular, Minus 16. Artistically, Bold Moves Plus will serve as a precursor to our inaugural festival which will debut in the 2021-2022 Season and will celebrate legendary contemporary choreography. Artistic Director Victoria Morgan’s whimsical Cinderella is now slated to close the 2020-2021 Season with a two-week engagement June 10-20 at Aronoff Center. As audiences enjoy the magical Cinderella, Cincinnati Ballet will also be celebrating the opening of the new Cincinnati Ballet Margaret & Michael Valentine Center for Dance in Walnut Hills. Cincinnati Ballet’s new home is slated to open in Summer 2021.

Casting Call for Al in THE SUNSHINE BOYS at Fairfield Footlighters

fflFairfield Footlighters announces the auditions for the role of Al in THE SUNSHINE BOYS written by Neil Simon and directed by Richard Zenk. THE SUNSHINE BOYS is the story of Al and Willie, two old vaudevillians who were the top-billed comedy duo of “Lewis and Clark” for over forty years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries, and laughs.

Al Lewis ( 60+ lead) – The former vaudeville partner of Willie, who abruptly decided to retire after 43 years of performing. Al is the more timid straight man to Willie’s explosive temperament, yet he can dish it out on an equal level; he accepts the limitations of old age and has learned to enjoy his golden years; however, it’s obvious he misses his old partner and the good times they shared.

Auditions will be held by Zoom or in-person arranged with the director. Email your theater resume and headshot to richardjoseph@gmail.com.

Rehearsals begin as soon as possible for five-six weeks. Masks are worn during rehearsals. All stage blocking keeps the cast members at least six feet away. The cast is asked to get a COVID test in August and again in September. Masks will not be worn the final week of rehearsals that will be held outside nor during the outdoor performances in Fairfield on 9/18 and 9/19.

Roles

  • Kylie Carson (Lead): Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
Leader of The Cupcake Club. A quirky, slightly awkward, nervous new girl–described as having “weird taste in clothes and freckles on her nose.” The butt of everyone’s jokes, she struggles with self-doubt and finding a place she fits in amidst the school social scene. Kylie goes on an emotional journey to unapologetically own who she is. Role requires strong acting skills and vocals.
  • Lexi Poole (Lead): 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
One of The Cupcake Club members. A shy, demure girl, who “tends to disappear” around her peers until she finds her voice and her power as a member of PLC. She is sensitive and artistic; the person responsible for turning the club’s cupcakes into mini works of art. In the end, she has no trouble asserting herself if it means sticking up for her friends. Lexi should have strong acting skills and vocals.
  • Jenna Medina (Lead): Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
One of The Cupcake Club members. “Do I talk a little loud?” Jenna is vivacious, loquacious, and the “golden tastebuds” of PLC–she knows everything about flavors and ingredients. She loves Oreos, a metaphor for her own personality: hard on the outside, soft on the inside. She tries to be tough and pretends like things don’t hurt her…but they do. Her family doesn’t have a lot of money or live in a fancy house (she’s always wearing her sisters’ hand-me-downs), which is why the popular girls look down on her. Yet she won’t back down when a bully challenges her–and tries to show Kylie how to do the same.
  • Sadie Harris (Lead): Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
One of The Cupcake Club members. Captain of the Blakely Bears Basketball team, she yearns to be looked upon as something other than a “dumb jock.” When she finds PLC, she discovers talents she never knew she had–i.e. the ability to crack an egg with one hand. She is physically tall and athletic; skilled with dribbling a basketball or twirling it on her finger.
  • Meredith Mitchell (Lead): Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
Leader of The Blah Girls (popular girls). Think Regina George from “Mean Girls.” Snide, snarky and self-absorbed, Meredith is Blakely’s Queen Bee who rules by fear, intimidation and a massive Instagram following. She preys on Kylie, appearing in her nightmares as the Wicked Witch. But Meredith isn’t just a bully; at her core, there is insecurity, vulnerability and the need–as much as anyone else–to feel loved. Her “minions” a.k.a. The Blah Girls (Blakely Ladies for the Advancement of Hip Hop) follow every command that she barks. Physically, she is stylish and a dancer, capable of both highly-charged emotional scenes and evoking a mean girl that is not a cliché.
  • Juliette/Kylie’s Mom (Supporting): 18+ WORK FROM HOME
A teacher at Blakely School and fierce advocate for her students. Loves her job and is in complete and total support of Kylie’s pursuit to branch out and find her path within the social constructs of Blakely.
  • The Blah Girls (Ensemble/Supporting): Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
Meredith’s “minions” very popular girls and they know it. Think Gretchen and Karen from “Mean Girls.” bullies but always with an innocent smile, all 3 girls are very proud to be a part of Meredith’s exclusive clique. They follow every command that she barks. Physically, they are stylish and dancers, capable of both highly-charged emotional scenes and evoking a mean girl that is not a cliché.
  • Ensemble: Male/Female, 9-17 WORK FROM HOME
    Strong singers and movers.

Auditions Announced for OTHER DESERT CITIES at Equality Productions

EP_logoEquality Productions’ virtual production of OTHER DESERT CITIES by Jon Robin Baitz. Directed by Brian Westerley.

It’s December 2004 and Brooke Wyeth returns home to Palm Springs after a six-year absence to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother and her aunt. Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history – a wound they don’t want to be reopened. In effect, she draws a line in the sand and dares them all to cross it.

Auditions for this show will be Wednesday, August 26th & Thursday, August 27th beginning at 7P. Auditions will consist of readings from the script, which will be emailed to you prior to your audition. Please sign up for your time slot & identify the character for your auditionhttps://tinyurl.com/yyayh595

If you need a timeslot other than what is showing as available, email the producer, Richard Zenk, at equalityproductionscincy@gmail.com

Characters:

  • Lyman Wyeth: (Late 50’s to late 60’s): Kind and gentle patriarch. A Hollywood B actor with some celebrity and charm who turned that into political influence. He is conservative but with a sense of humor about himself and a deep love for his family.
  • Polly Wyeth: (Late 50’s to late 60’s): Lyman’s wife. Graceful and acerbic matriarch. She has been active for decades in the Republican Party. She is deeply devoted to the preservation of her social standing, her family, and the health of her husband.
  • Brooke Wyeth: (Mid 30’s to 40’s): Lyman and Polly’s daughter. She is a professional writer who has been living in New York after a mental breakdown.
  • Trip Wyeth: (Late 20’s to mid 30’s): Brooke’s brother. Witty and self-effacing. He is a TV producer for reality TV – in a family obsessed with his intellectual, older sister’s mental health.
  • Silda Grauman: (late 50’s to early 70’s): Polly’s sister. Creative, fragile, and funny. A former B movie writer, and the Bohemian, polar opposite of her sister. She is fresh out of rehab and repays the support of the conservative Wyeths by joining Brooke in some liberal needling of her parents.

Zoom rehearsals will be TBD based on actor availability. This show is a benefit & all roles are unpaid. The show will be recorded via Zoom & uploaded to YouTube.
