Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music’s production of the classic movie musical SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Panelists praised the production as “Joyful, happy, shining and memorable…An uplifting story and a treat for the eyes.” Diane Lala was commended both for her direction (“a standout production all-around with many delightful and excellent elements that really lived up to the silver screen standard of the film”) and for her contribution to the choreography, along with co-choreographer Patty James: “Covering multiple styles and always challenging the students, the choreography was truly the star of this show, and it was executed brilliantly by the talented performers.” Ryan Sigurdson’s music direction was also recognized as “solid and impressive”. Scenic Designer Mark Halpin delivered a wonderful set—“layered in a complex, but very functional way that delivered the many silver-screen settings”–and technical director Steve Miller was also given a nod for his contribution to the “fantastic and well-executed” rain effects in the iconic title number. Reba’s Senske’s costume design was described as “numerous, timely, lush, complimentary to character, and a delight to look at.” Finally, from a technical aspect, CCM Electronic Media students were recognized for the “hilarious” and “seamlessly executed” videos they created for many of the scenes.

From a performance standpoint, the entire ensemble was applauded for outstanding dancing and singing.” Matt Hill, as Cosmo Brown, and Sarah Bishop, as Lina Lamont, were particularly singled out as “dead-on portraying their characters and handling the timing and humor effectively.”

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

CCM’s Mainstage Series Continues With a Joyous Stage Adaptation of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, Oct. 31 – Nov. 3

CCM brings one of Hollywood’s most-loved musicals to life with a graceful stage adaptation of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, running Oct. 31 through Nov. 3 in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

[Visit the BTC production page.]

Based on the 1952 American musical comedy film of the same name, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood during the transition from silent films to “talkies.” The story centers on popular silent film star Don Lockwood (originally portrayed by Gene Kelly, who also choreographed and co-directed the classic film), his shallow leading lady Lina Lamont, his sidekick Cosmo Brown and aspiring actress Kathy Selden.

CCM Professor of Musical Theatre and resident choreographer Diane Lala directs this production, which she describes as a “wonderful revisiting of a true classic.” The recipient of the 2012 Big Easy Theater Award for Best Choreography and the 2011 Big Easy Theatre Award for Best Director, Lala also collaborates with Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre/Dance Patti James on the choreography of this dance-filled production, which she promises will showcase a wide variety of different dance forms, from ballet to tap and beyond.

Graduate student Ryan Sigurdson provides musical direction under the supervision of Associate Professor of Musical Theatre Roger Grodsky. With a glorious score by Nacio Herb Brown and lyrics by Arthur Freed, standards such as “Good Morning,” “Make ‘em Laugh,” “You Are My Lucky Star” and the legendary “Singin’ in the Rain” will have audience members leaving the theater humming.

Of course it wouldn’t be SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN without buckets of rain, silent films and “talkies” from the original movie. Before proposing this production, Lala approached CCM’s Department of Theatre Design and Production and Division of Electronic Media to ensure that her vision for the show was possible. “For a show like this to be able to happen, it takes a village,” Lala explains. With scenic design by Mark Halpin, technical direction by Steve Miller, multimedia expertise of Electronic Media Professors Kevin Burke and Lakshmi Tirumala and student video director Sam Pennybacker, this production has provided ample opportunities for interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration. This production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN even involved Professor of Drama and resident Fight Master k. Jenny Jones, who choreographed the fighting and stage combat for one of the silent movies featured in the show. The result is a live performance that will be filled with films, flashbacks and falling rain.

Seniors Max Clayton and Katie Wesler inhabit the iconic roles of Don and Kathy, first made famous by Hollywood legends Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. “When I got the role, my stomach dropped from both excitement and terror,” says Clayton, who took his first dance class at CCM and now inhabits the iconic role that Kelly made legendary. “This is physically the most demanding role I’ve ever played. I’m on stage for most of the show, so this rehearsal process has been a real test of stamina for me.”

“Our challenge is to find the same dynamic relationship Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly had on the screen and to recreate it for the stage,” says Wesler of her portrayal of Kathy Selden. “It’s exciting that CCM has undertaken such a large dance show that includes so many different elements – from film, to water, to tap – it has a little bit of everything! There’s as much going on back stage as there is on stage, so this will be an exciting show for all of us to experience.”

The musical, based on a Stephen King horror novel, was presented last weekend, featuring students majoring in the nationally acclaimed Musical Theatre program at UC. LCT Panelists commended Lead Actress Hannah Freeman as Carrie White. “Her vocal clarity and pitch were great and the honesty with which she played the range of emotions was grounded,” stated one panelist. Another said Freeman “drew the audience in from the outset and delivered a vocally beautiful performance with seeming ease. Her acting communicated Carrie’s pain and grace. Even as audiences prepared for the inevitable, Freeman’s authenticity as Carrie made us care so much about her we hoped for a happier ending.”

Also singled out, Jenny Hickman as the mother, Margaret White, who was “an outstanding singer and presence on the stage.”

Scenic designer by Sarabeth Hall also won over the panelists. A panelist noted “she created a visceral environment that thrust audiences into the piece and created palpable excitement well before the first entrance.”

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music Drama Department’s THE CRUCIBLE with a 4 Star Rating.

Written in 1953 as a parable for McCarthyism by American playwright Arthur Miller, The Crucible tells a story of hysteria and witchcraft in colonial Salem.

Panelists praised The Crucible as “a skillful, intense, heartfelt, and nearly perfect production of The Crucible. I truly watched in wonder as the story unfolded.” “The ensemble acting was terrific…this cast was admirable in its portrayal of a wide range of ages, young to middle-age to elderly.” As one panelist noted: “I would recommend the production because it is a classic play that still resonates today.”

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.
