Jan. 21-Feb. 14 | Streaming begins Jan. 28
Red Bank Road Theatre [Oakley]

In this musical adaptation of everyone’s favorite sarcastic tubby tabby, Garfield awakens to find his birthday – the most important day of the year – has fallen on a Monday. The horror! To make matters worse, all his friends – Jon, Odie, Arlene, and even his nemesis, Nermal – have completely forgotten it’s his big day. Only his beloved teddy bear, Pookie, understands his disappointment. Feeling rejected, Garfield leaves the comforts of home but soon realizes in the outside there’s no T.V., the food is garbage (literally), and animal control is always just around the corner.  In the end, Garfield learns little things like, you know, the value of friendship and that “home is where the heart – and the food – is.

Cincinnati – Mondays aren’t everyone’s favorite, but at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT), there’s one cool cat that dislikes Mondays the most – Garfield. He’ll be center stage, featured in his own show, GARFIELD, THE MUSICAL WITH CATTITUDE as part of the company’s 101st season. The show can be seen in-person, via socially distanced, LIVE performances on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road starting on January 21, 2021. The show will also be streaming to watch at home or at school through the online service, Broadway On Demand, beginning January 28.

The show’s director, Eric Byrd, who also serves as TCT’s Associate Artistic Director and Company Manager said, “My guess is Garfield would’ve thrived in quarantine. He’d be able to sleep through Mondays, gorge on lasagna, and watch TV morning, noon, and night. But in this story, our unlikely hero embarks on an epic journey outside the comfort of his own home and to a world unknown and unexplored and discovers that ‘perspective is everything.’ The year 2020 challenged all of us and put many things into perspective.”

Mr. Byrd adds, “Sometimes the little things in life, the things we aren’t always able to make time for, like the friends and family we celebrate with, mean the most to us. Garfield’s dream of the perfect birthday celebration surrounded by the people in his life, is a dream we all share right about now.”

In-person seating will be limited to 30% (or just 44 seats) per performance.

The TCT Team has continued to work diligently to create and debut new safety protocols to protect the audience, staff, and the actors on stage.

As with TCT’s most recent production, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, special nose and mouth coverings will again be integrated into the costumes by Resident Costume Designer, Jeff Shearer, and pre-recorded vocal amplification will be used to reduce the amount of respiration created by actors in the theater during a performance.

“The health and well-being of our audience, students, and staff have been and always will be our top priority, said Kim Kern, TCT’s Managing Director and CEO. “In April, we assembled a committee of advisors, health professionals, and community leaders to guide our safety protocols. Through their constant guidance, we continue to receive the most up-to-date information, implement strategies early, and continue to go above and beyond CDC, state, and local guidelines to keep everyone safe, happy, healthy, and creative.”

At all in-person shows, mandatory masks for the audience, as well as social distancing, will be required. For complete health and safely protocols, visit https://thechildrenstheatre.com/2020/08/safety-protocols/.

Live performances on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett’s Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road will take place Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 11am, 2pm, and 5pm, and Sundays at 2pm and 5pm, January 21 through February 14, 2021.

Tickets and digital passes are on sale now. For details visit www.thechildrenstheatre.com. Ticket prices for live performances are $25 per ticket.

Digital performances begin January 28 on Broadway on Demand. The presale price for a digital pass is $15.95. This presale price is only available until the production debuts online. After that time, digital passes are $18.95. Digital passes provide unlimited viewing over three days, which begin after the first view.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s production of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT

Velveteen Rabbit Costume Rendering.

Featuring IN PERSON and online performances starting next week

CincinnatiWhen The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati kicks off its 101st season next week, it may look and feel a bit different. But the company is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue creating life-long memories through its award-winning MainStage productions with both in-person, socially-distanced, LIVE performances, as well as digitally streaming shows to watch at home or at school through the online service, Broadway On Demand.

Starting November 12, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, Margery Williams’ award-winning classic tale of a stuffed toy rabbit made real by a child’s enduring love will be retold in a modern and delightfully electric holiday musical staged live for audiences on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road. The show will begin streaming for home and school audiences on Broadway On Demand the following weekon November 19.

In an era of virtual reality and Minecraft, this musical captures the joy and magic of the book children and adults know and love, with a 16-bit digital twist designed to get the entire family into the spirit of the season.

TCT’s version of The Velveteen Rabbit is set within the high-tech concept of virtual reality. We live in a world of computers, smart phones, Zoom meetings, and gaming systems. Through these digital experiences, a child’s imagination can be exercised in ways we never imagined before, said Roderick Justice, Producing Artistic Director and director of the stage production. “Virtual reality unlocks potential and draw parallels to what is real and what had the potential to be real.”

Mr. Justice adds, “The Velveteen Rabbit is a poetic lesson in a child’s ability to love. Children are often thrust into the same situations in which our Velveteen Rabbit finds himself. They can be made to feel insecure and inadequate, or not quite “real” when bullied or teased by others. Children are often left alone with their thoughts, worries, and vivid imaginations to fill in the blanks.”

In-person seating will be limited to 30% (or 44 seats) per performance. Demand is high and performances are expected to sell out quickly — some are already filled.

The TCT Team has been working diligently to create and debut new safety protocols to protect the audience, staff, and the actors on stage. Most exciting are specially designed nose and mouth coverings integrated into the costumes by Resident Costume Designer, Jeff Shearer, and pre-recorded vocal amplification used to reduce the amount of respiration created by actors in the theater during a performance.

“The health and well-being of our audience, students, and staff have been and always will be our top priority, said Kim Kern, TCT’s Managing Director and CEO. “In April, we assembled a committee of advisors, health professionals, and community leaders to guide our safety protocols. Through their constant guidance, we receive the most up-to-date information, implement strategies early, and continue to go above and beyond CDC, state, and local guidelines to keep everyone safe, happy, healthy, and creative.”

At all in-person shows, mandatory masks for the audience, as well as social distancing, will be required. For complete health and safely protocols, visit https://thechildrenstheatre.com/2020/08/safety-protocols/.

Live performances on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett’s Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road will take place Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 11am, 2pm, and 5pm, and Sundays at 2pm and 5pm November 12 through December 13. (Please note: shows will not take place the week of November 23 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.)

Tickets and digital passes are on sale now. For details visit www.thechildrenstheatre.com. Ticket prices for live performances range from $25 to $30 per ticket.

With the help of Macy’s as Virtual Production Sponsor, digital performances begin on Broadway on Demand on November 19. The presale price for a digital pass is $15.95. This presale price is only available until the production debuts online. After that time, digital passes are $18.95. KeyBank’s Lead Gift Unlocks the Door for Change at TCT

TCTC_exterior of building with masks (1)The Change Fund to Bring Diverse Voices to The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

CINCINNATI:  The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) is proud to announce the lead gift in a new company initiative focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access initiatives. With funds of $5,000 from KeyBank, TCT plans to launch The Change Fund. KeyBank’s investment will be used for the very first Change Fund activity, likely a 2- or 3-month arts administration fellowship, beginning Fall 2021.

“Our goal at TCT is to embrace and emulate inclusivity and to ensure that ALL members of our community see themselves represented across all facets of our organization,” said Kim Kern, Managing Director and CEO of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati. “We commit to identifying, addressing and removing misconceptions, barriers and biases in our organization, including those pertaining to productions, process, practices, and programs. The Change Fund is designed to focus on this access across our staff, Board of Trustees, audiences, programs and artists regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, national origin, or educational background.

TCT hopes that the generosity of KeyBank will inspire others to follow their lead and support this much needed fund. The Change Fund will bring diverse voices to The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s stage and operations, providing artists, choreographers, administrators, playwrights, crew, and others with increased opportunities by eliminating systemic barriers and inequalities that have prohibited such opportunity in the past.

“KeyBank’s culture is built on a foundation of diversity, equity and inclusion for all,” said Cincinnati Market President Michael McCuen. “As a leader in the business community, we recognize the role we play and are committed to adding our voice and actions to drive progress toward ensuring equity, inclusion and justice for every individual in the communities we serve.  We are proud to help TCT launch The Change Fund and encourage other corporations to join us.”

As a company recognized for its commitment to and advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, KeyBank reaffirmed its strong stand for social justice and racial equity earlier this year with a $1 million commitment to provide social change grants in all its 26 markets, and has committed to a comprehensive community response plan to accelerate outcomes and create meaningful and lasting advancement toward racial equity and social justice across its footprint.

To learn more about how you or your organization can support The Change Fund please contact Tera Pierce, TCT’s Development Manager, Corporate Partnerships, at tera.pierce@tctcincinnati.com or call 513-569-8080 x32.
