The Passing of Tom Story

Thomas Joseph Storey passed away on January 28, 2023 after a long illness.  He leaves behind his dear wife of 65 years, Nancy Ann (nee Moore) and many loving nieces, nephews, friends and family members.

Tom was born on September 6, 1935 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from Elder High School in 1952.  He earned a degree in Broadcasting from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and went on to a 47 year career as Program Administrator for WLW-T Television in downtown Cincinnati.

At the same time, Tom became well-known as a director and actor in both community and professional theatre in the area.  He and Nancy Ann met through The Bellarmine Players and together they worked in such theatres as The Drama Workshop, Edgecliff Theater, Mariemont Players, The Village Players of Ft. Thomas, Knox Drama Workshop, Stagecrafters, Cincinnati Music Theater, Footlighters, The IF Theater Collective, Sunset Players and Wyoming Players.  His acting roles ranged from John Proctor in ‘The Crucible’ to Clarence Darrow in ‘Never the Sinner’ to Al Lewis in ‘The Sunshine Boys’.

Tom won multiple awards for acting and directing through his career and he and Nancy Ann in 2020 were honored as recipients of The Art Rouse Award from ACT-Cincinnati, given annually in recognition for ongoing contributions to area theatre.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cecilia Church, 3105 Madison Road, Cincinnati, OH  45209 on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:30 am.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice in Tom’s honor.

Casting Call for Role of Jervis Pendleton in DADDY LONG LEGS at Sunset Players

SSP_logoThe Sunset Players community theater group and director Allen Lindsey will hold open auditions for the role of Jervis Pendelton for their spring show DADDY LONG LEGS, a musical by Paul Gordon and John Caird. The role of Jerusha Abbott has already been cast.

Synopsis:
Jerusha Abbott is the “Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home” until a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer. Required to write him a letter once a month, she is never to know the benefactor’s identity – so she invents one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows that he will never respond to her letters, she grows more and more fond of this elusive and kindly “old” gentleman. But another relationship soon begins to develop in Jerusha’s life. Jervis Pendleton is the well-do-do, “youngish” uncle of one of Jerusha’s roommates, and he introduces her to a world of literature, travel and adventure. Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.” Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a fact that will change her life forever.

Auditions will consist of a song appropriate to the style of the show that can be submitted via video/audio clip or in person. Callbacks will consist of readings from the script in person opposite the actress playing Jerusha

  • Jervis Pendleton
    Jerusha’s anonymous benefactor. A shy, highly educated East Cost aristocrat.
    Age – mid-20’s to early 30’s
    Vocal range: Bari-Tenor, top G#4, bottom G3
  • Jerusha Abbot
    The oldest orphan in the John Greer Home.
    Stage age 18-22 (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST)

Rehearsals:
A table read in early February followed by a rehearsal schedule TBD based on availability. Tech week will be from April 30 to May 4. We will try to be dark on Wednesday but no promises.

Show Dates:
May 5-6, 12-14, and 18-20 at the Arts Center At Dunham.

Cast Announced for BE MY BABY at Sunset Players

Directors Sought for 2023-24 Season at Sunset Players

SSP_logoSunset Players is seeking proposals from directors interested in directing a show in our 2023/2024 season.

The Sunset Players welcomes the submission of plays for performance consideration. A standard season consists of three plays to be performed in September/October, February/March, April/May, and a Children’s Workshop show in December. One musical per season will also be considered.

Potential directors should have directed or assistant-directed shows in the past.

Potential directors must be open to using experienced Sunset Players Producers and Lighting and Sound Designers.

A successful proposal would contain:

  • A short summary of the action of the play or musical.
  • A description of the candidate’s background in theater, including their unique qualifications for directing their proposed show.
  • A list of the show’s characters with a brief description of their age and type.
  • A description of the director’s concept/vision for staging the play.
  • A description of the play’s scenic and costume requirements.
  • A list of needed production staff.
  • A proposed budget for the production.
  • Any exceptional costs associated with this production? (orchestra, musicians, etc.)
  • A proposed rehearsal schedule.
  • Any scheduling concerns.

Proposals for the 23/24 season must be received by December 16, 2022, to be considered. Please include a digital copy of the play or musical if possible.

Three Male Actors Sought for BE MY BABY at Sunset Players

SSP_logoThe Sunset Players seeks three male actors for their winter show, BE MY BABY, a comedy by Ken Ludwig.

The remaining characters to be cast are:

  • John Campbell – An irascible Scotsman (late 50s, Scottish accent)
  • Christy McCall – John’s ward (male, 20s-30s, Scottish accent)
  • Man – All other male parts (any age, Scottish, general European, and general American accent)

Synopsis:
The play tells the story of John, an irascible Scotsman, and an uptight English woman, Maude, both in their late 50s, who take on the journey of a lifetime. They are brought together when his ward marries her niece. Then, when the young couple decides to adopt a newborn baby, the older couple has to travel 6,000 miles to California to pick up the child and bring her safely home to Scotland. The problem is John and Maude despise each other. To make matters worse, they get stranded in San Francisco for several weeks and are expected to jointly care for the helpless newborn. There they form a new partnership and learn some startling lessons about life and love.
