Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center’s CAMELOT IN CONCERT with 3 LCT nominations, for lead actors (Mark Hardy and Doug Carpenter), lead actress (Danielle Knox), as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

In the magical age of Merlin and the Round Table, Arthur and Guenevere preside over tranquil Camelot in enlightened bliss, until bold Sir Lancelot and the queen succumb to a romance that betrays Arthur and threatens to tear his kingdom and his ideals asunder. With cherished songs including “If Ever I Would Leave You” and “How To Handle a Woman,” Lerner & Loewe’s lyrical score enchants under the baton of Mischa Santora and members of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

Panelists praised Mark Hardy’s portrayal of King Arthur as “convincing”: “he completely filled his role as Arthur, performing with absolute assurance.” Doug Carpenter as Lancelot was “a powerhouse both in voice and acting sensibilities”; “he acted with grace and simplicity which only increased his strength and stature as Lance”. Danielle Knox “was a nearly perfect Guenevere: pretty, flighty then maturing”; her voice was “divine”. Panelists thought this concert version of Camelot was “a wonderful concept, making for an up-close, intimate experience for the audience.”

CAMELOT IN CONCERT continues through February 3rd. Tickets can be purchased at www.thecarnegie .com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Untethered Theatre‘s Red Light Winter with 4 LCT nominations as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production: Direction (Paul Morris), Lead Actor (Carter Bratton and Jon Kovach) and Lead Actress (Mindy Heithaus).

One of the most provocative plays of the past decade, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Red Light Winter reminds us that the past – no matter how much you’d like to forget, or what you choose to remember – is never far behind. Matt can talk about the world at length even if he’s too emotionally muddled to participate in it. Davis is the eternal life of the party. These college pals take one last stab at their 20s with a trip to Amsterdam, where a night with the beguiling prostitute Christina changes everything.

Panelists praised Paul Morris for his attention to detail and using the theatre space to its best advantage: “the small, intimate space…heightens the experience, as you are THERE in the middle of this seething, sexy, manic, off-the-wall interplay.” Panelists raved about Mindy Heithaus’ “unflinching” portrayal of Christine: “She was, at turns, sexy, vulnerable, and sophisticated”; “this is a brave actress, and she uses her body as a force that blasts this play to another level.” Jon Kovach played “the sensitive, over-intellectual, and befuddled Matt with perfection”, while Carter Bratton was “outstanding” as Davis: “a difficult, almost impossible role to pull off—he did a fine job of it.” Overall, the panelists called Red Light Winter “a special production”: “captivating entertainment, perfectly played by three extraordinary actors.”

Red Light Winter continues through February 2nd. Tickets can be purchased at www.untetheredtheatreco.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s RICHARD II with an LCT nomination for lead actor (Brent Vimtrup) and lighting design (Andrew Hungerford), as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

RICHARD II is an epic tale of fading power that sheds a light on the deterioration of a kingdom and the isolation of power. King Richard exiles his noblemen while seizing their land to carry on his own wars. As dissent continues to grow, a fight for the true heart of England begins and one man’s celestial right to rule is called into question creating the genesis of the “War of the Roses.”

Panelists praised Brent Vimtrup’s portrayal of Richard II as “original, specific, and fascinating”; he “articulated the words and feelings so well as he held Shakespeare’s jewels up to the light and they sparkled.” Andrew Hungerford’s lighting created “very ominous and haunting images”; the lighting was “powerful and nuanced”. Of the play as a whole, one panelist commented, “Credit the CSC for making a complex story with multiple characters accessible to the general audience and creating a coherent vision of a world torn between the ideal of divine rule and the reality of an incompetent monarch.”

RICHARD II continues through February 3rd. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincyshakes.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s production of SANTA’S TOY FACTORY with 4 LCT nominations for featured actor (Leo Northart III), Scenic Design (David Centers), Stage Management (Jennifer Picone) and Costumes (Kathie Brookfield) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

In the new holiday musical, SANTA’S TOY FACTORY, as the elves prepare for Santa’s Christmas Eve toy deliveries, they are faced with a huge dilemma. The Holiday ‘Spirit Meter’ is precariously low! Wendell, the kindest elf, knows that if the Christmas Spirit fails to reach the meter’s top level, Santa’s sleigh won’t be able to lift off the ground. Through the wonder of song and dance Wendell discovers the real meaning of Christmas: the joy of a happy heart and the magic of a holiday wish fulfilled.

Panelists nominated Leo Northart III, as Santa, whose “beautiful rich vocal abilities give this Santa more than the pre requisite ‘ho-ho-ho’, and he manages to create a focused and three dimensional character.” David Center’s colorful set was “eye-popping” with “lots of cool toys on the shelves”. Stage manager Jennifer Picone “had this complicated show running smoothly,” while Kathie Brookfield’s costumes were “lovely” and showed impressive attention to detail. The show as a whole was “bursting with energy and Christmas spirit”; the kids in the audience were “alternately mesmerized by the magic and laughing with excitement”.

Santa’s Toy Factory continues through December 15th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.thechildrenstheatre.com/onstage.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.
