Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Announce Reset 2020-2021 Seasons Due to Covid-19 Challenges

Seasons to start later with a smaller slate of shows

PIP_logoCINCINNATI – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati today issued a joint announcement that they will delay the start of their 2020-21 seasons due to the complex challenges around continuing live performances. All three theatres plan to kick off their revised seasons this winter with a smaller slate of rearranged, rescheduled or new shows.

In addition to the current ban on mass gatherings in Ohio, the nonprofit theatres must finalize viable plans to play to lower audience capacities for social distancing, communicate with theatre’s professional unions (such as Actors Equity) about performing safely and put numerous, new safety protocols in place.

With so many of the same challenges and the cross-over between audiences, the artistic leaders of the three organizations – Blake Robison (Playhouse), Brian Isaac Phillips (CSC) and D. Lynn Meyers (ETC) – indicated that they are working together to present consistent opening plans and safety guidelines.

The three leaders also announced that COVID-19 safety measures – including intense cleaning, longer runs to accommodate social distancing and other protocols – will be in place when the theatres open, but specifics will be announced closer to opening dates since the overall situation and guidelines from the state of Ohio and the CDC could change. They noted that further adjustments to their schedules could become necessary to ensure the safety of patrons, artists and staff, which is of the utmost importance.

All three organizations will reach out directly to their own patrons regarding procedures and options for 2020-21 tickets already purchased.  Additional tickets will go on sale later in the fall.

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park brings a new, smaller version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL to celebrate the holidays, followed by seven productions in 2021.

The Playhouse will open its revised season on December 1 with a new, one-person adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Two actors will share the role and alternate performances on the existing set, which audiences will recognize, with new lighting and costuming. This would have been the 30th anniversary of the Playhouse’s annual holiday favorite. Artistic Director Blake Robison directs the one-person show.

“This is the most viable way for us to provide cheer and hope this holiday season,” said Mr. Robison. “For safety, we are starting off with the smallest cast shows and building up from there through the spring. The acting, sets, costumes and overall artistry will be at the same level that Playhouse audiences always enjoy.”

The beloved version of the Playhouse’s annual holiday production will return in 2021 if it is safe to do a large-cast show by that time.

A seven-show season will follow A CHRISTMAS CAROL, beginning in January. The Marx Theatre season features four productions: the previously announced world premiere of THE WEST END by Keith Josef Adkins, STEEL MAGNOLIAS and Agatha Christie’s MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Newly added to the season is SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY by Jocelyn Bioh, a biting comedy that explores the universal challenges of teenage girlhood and all the drama that comes with it. The Rosenthal Shelterhouse Season consists of BECOMING DR. RUTH, LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR AND GRILL and INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP.

A detailed line-up of the 2020-21 season is included below and available at cincyplay.com. In addition, the Playhouse is planning both virtual and outdoor interactive theatrical experiences for late summer/early fall as part of its Off the Grid series and is working on virtual education and outreach programs for schools. Details on these programs will be announced later.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will return in late November with the much-loved holiday tradition EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD (AND THEN SOME!). “This show, which has run at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for over a decade, will be a wonderful way to welcome back our patrons, who we have greatly missed during this time,” said Brian Isaac Phillips, CSC Producing Artistic Director.

Then, beginning in 2021, CSC will present a rearranged slate of Shakespeare titles back to back to return the company to its roots.  First up in January will be the much-awaited production of HAMLET featuring Sara Clark portraying a reverse gendered Hamlet. This will be followed by a romantic and traditional production of ROMEO AND JULIET opening in March and a slapstick production of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS inspired by vintage Las Vegas opening in April.

And then, to close the season, CSC will reprise the production that was halted only weeks into the performance of Kate Hamill’s adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.  “This show had already become the most popular production in Cincinnati Shakespeare Company history before the unfortunate closure. We think it will be very fitting for us to close this triumphant new season with the return of this much loved and very jubilant production” said Mr. Phillips.

In addition, the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will continue to present its robust Education and Outreach programs in person and online in the schools and communities of the tri-state including FREE Shakespeare in the Park this summer.

ETC_new_logo_bannerEnsemble Theatre Cincinnati will continue annual community partnerships this winter and plans to open its 2020-21 Season in January with four productions.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati will start a four-show season in January, reprising its production of the 2018 Obie Award-winning play PIPELINE by Dominique Morisseau, acclaimed MacArthur “Genius” Grant playwright. Having played a few performances to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, the show was abruptly suspended the day after it opened this past March as a result of the ban on mass gatherings.

Due to safety precautions for audiences and performers alike, ETC’s previously announced holiday production, SLEEPING BEAUTY, will no longer be included in the upcoming season given its large cast size and singing format. ETC plans to return to its non-traditional fairy tale musicals in 2021 provided large-cast shows are possible by that time.

ETC had been preparing to share the remainder of its 2020-2021 Season this past spring, an announcement which was also delayed in the wake of the pandemic. In the coming weeks, ETC hopes to share the other three productions that will comprise its rearranged upcoming season and which will embrace the spirit of social consciousness that is the organization’s hallmark.

In addition, ETC will continue to adapt its programming wherever possible to be available online, including offering digital versions of its celebrated annual special event Expectations of Christmas along with its general audition call, Meals 4 Monologues, both in December.

All three organizations are supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund them with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

(July 8, 2020) – Dayton Live is pleased to announce it will welcome the first Dayton engagement of HAMILTON to the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center in the 2021-2022 Season. In addition, Dayton Live announces a new lineup for the upcoming 2020-2021 Premier Health Broadway in Dayton Season. Due to closures and restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-2021 season will be delayed, launching in January 2021 with slightly revised programming.

In fact, the question I get more often than any other is when will HAMILTON be here? Now we can officially confirm: HAMILTON is coming to Dayton.”

“The shutdown of Broadway in New York City has had a wide-reaching effect on performing arts centers and Broadway presenters around the country,” Sutton said. “In addition to not having a clear picture when our venues will be open again, nearly all Broadway tours have closed at least temporarily and are not going to be playing in the fall. The Human Race Theatre Company Announces Changes to 34th Season Schedule

HRTC_new logoThe Human Race Theatre Company would like to thank our artists, audiences and community for their support and commitment to our work during this troublesome time. We could not continue to do what we do without that support.

Since March, when the pandemic forced us to close our season, we have worked with state and local officials, union representatives and other producers around the country to strategize reopening our theatre. We have listened to our audiences’ concerns about group gatherings and desires for a safe and celebratory return to LIVE theatre on our stage. After much thoughtful contemplation, we have decided to move forward with a new time frame for our full “Dayton Premieres” season.

In order to provide the safest experience for our audience and our artists, we are moving the entire season into the 2021 calendar year and will reopen The Loft in February, 2021. Below is the new schedule. Additional information on each production can be found at www.humanracetheatre.org.

2020-2021 Season Update from Troy Civic Theatre

TROY_logoThe Troy Civic Theatre board of directors has been closely following the Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) situation affecting our communities since the initial shut-down announcements in March. After recent conversations with the Ohio Department of Health, several meetings with board members, and gathering feedback and input from our members, season ticket holders, sponsors, and patrons, the board has made decisions regarding the 2020-2021 theatre season.

The postponed production of the Jones, Hope, Wooten comedy THE HALLELUJAH GIRLS (previously planned for May 2020) will be going forward in August. The show will be presented August 7-9, 14-16, 2020, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, and with added Saturday matinee performances, also at 2 pm. All 2019-20 season ticket holders will be able to use their tickets. However, due to social distancing, you may not be able to retain your usual seats or performances. We will be asking that season ticket holders please confirm the dates they wish to attend and number in their party by late July, in order for proper seating to be provided. More information will be coming to season ticket holders from our box office personnel regarding requirements and recommendations.

The TCT board also plans to continue with the previously announced 2020-2021 season, starting with DADDY’S DYIN’, WHO’S GOT THE WILL in September, directed by Michael Schumacher. The Del Shores comedy will be followed in November by the touching Sean Grennan drama, THE TIN WOMAN, directed by Niccole SueAnn Wallace. March 2021 will offer the uproarious Jones, Hope, Wooten farce, FARCE OF HABIT, directed by Steve Dietrich. The 2020-21 season will conclude with the hit musical BONNIE AND CLYDE, directed by Derek Dunavent. Season ticket flyers will be going out to all current season ticket holders soon, and season tickets will be available for purchase during THE HALLELUJAH GIRLS performances. As the extent of social distancing and gathering limits for the future is still now known, previously preferred seating may not be available.

The board of directors is as committed to keeping our audiences and members safe as we are to providing quality entertainment. To this end, we are continuing to talk to the Ohio and Miami County Departments of Health for their guidance regarding requirements and recommendations for live theatre, and setting our policies and procedures for these upcoming productions accordingly. We ask for your continued patience as we work towards making these important decisions, and set up a fluid seating plan that will also meet the needs and preferences of our audience members.

While we do not have everything set yet, the board is creating a plan for chair placement that can be altered depending on the size of the audiences (currently anticipated to be 25-30 audience members per performance). Protocols regarding intermission, entrance into the theatre, seating, and dismissing the audience at the end of the performance are still being discussed, and will be announced as decisions are being made. Use of masks or face coverings by audience members will be strongly encouraged, hand sanitizer will be available for everyone entering the theatre, and a cleaning protocol for before and after performances will include frequent disinfecting of all hard surfaces, as well as a plan to spray down the entire theatre with hypochlorous acid (HOCL), commonly used as a disinfectant spray in dental offices and hospitals.

The Carnegie Announces Changes to the 2020-2021 Season

TC_logo_newNew concert series, free films set for 2020 with revamped schedule of theatre productions set for 2021

COVINGTON, KY – The Carnegie’s usual fare of upbeat musicals and stunning intimate dramas will have to wait until next season. In order to ensure patrons’ safety and proper social distancing, The Carnegie is moving its previously announced 2020-21 productions of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF to the 2021-22 calendar. Work is also being done to bring back The Carnegie’s canceled production of END OF THE RAINBOW in the 2021-22 season. But just because the Theatre Series is on hold, doesn’t mean The Carnegie won’t be serving up enticing and exciting entertainment in the coming year.

“While postponing so many great shows is disappointing, I’m really excited to spend this time on new creative endeavors, original works, and collaborating closely with the amazing artists who call our region home,” said Theatre Director, Maggie Perrino.

Current season subscribers will have their subscriptions automatically rolled over to the 2021-22 season on Aug. 15. Those who do not wish to have their subscription rolled over may choose from one of the following options:

  • Donate the value of their ticket to The Carnegie as a tax-deductible expense;
  • Exchange the value of their tickets for one of the shows in the 2021 mini-season (see below);
  • Convert their tickets to a gift certificate that can be used for a future event of their choosing; or
  • Request a refund for the value of their tickets with the box office. 

ALL-NEW TINY CONCERT SERIES
Local singers and Carnegie favorites will be the featured performers for the new tiny concert series, which will begin in September and run through March 2021. Performers will play to a limited, 50-member maximum audience in The Carnegie’s 447 seat theatre for each of these events.

Additionally, those unable to attend the one-hour concerts in person will be able to view them online via ticketed livestreaming in the comfort of their own home. Details regarding line-up of performers, times and dates of the performances will be released at a later date.

FREE MOVIES FOR THE PUBLIC
To continue The Carnegie’s mission to provide arts experiences in an historic space for the public, free viewings of movie musicals will be held for audiences of just 50 people in the theatre throughout the fall. Titles and dates to be announced soon. Tickets will be free, but patrons must reserve seats ahead of time. 

ALL-NEW 2021 MINI SEASON
The spring of 2021 will bring three artistic endeavors to The Carnegie, the first of which features a first-of-its-kind regional collaboration with Northern Kentucky University’s (NKU) School of the Arts (SOTA).

THE CARNEGIE PRESENTS, in collaboration with the NKU School of the Arts, A New Play by D. Lynn Meyers | Playing April 9–25, 2021

The collaboration with NKU will see Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s Producing Artistic Director, D. Lynn Meyers, bring a new play to The Carnegie’s performance space. This bold pairing of educational and creative goals will allow students to work intimately with Meyers to workshop and refine the new playscript through the 2020-21 school year. The Carnegie will then debut this world premier script as the kick-off to its 2021 Mini Season and in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the YES Festival, NKU’s new-play festival, the oldest collegiate festival of its type in the country.

GEORGE REMUS: BOOTLEGGING & BROADWAY | Playing April 30–May 1, 2021

A penniless German Immigrant who grew up in Chicago, George Remus spent much of his life in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region. He was first a pharmacist, then a lawyer, and eventually the most famous bootlegger of them all. He had government politicians in his pocket, the Chicago mob at his feet, and the perfect scheme for selling barrels and barrels of whiskey during the era of prohibition and speakeasies. With a lavish mansion on a hill and over-the-top parties, Remus was a millionaire playboy in 1922 – some even say he was the real Jay Gatsby. His legendary rise and fall is the subject of this new musical.

I GOT RHYTHM | Playing May 21–30,2021

I GOT RHYTHM celebrates the exuberant dance style of tap while singing and swinging to some of the greatest songs in the American songbook. Featuring music from Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and more, you’ll leave buzzing with excitement from this high-spirited show.
