Footlighters present Raison D’Etre Holiday Concert

Described by one critic as “divinely stirring,” their singing defines Raison D’Etre. According to Mike Breen of Cincinnati CityBeat, this folk trio offers “some of the finest three-part harmony singing you’ll likely ever hear.” In a typical performance, the women invite you around the hearth of heart and home through their songs about life’s journey, love, and loss. Even their carefully selected covers from Mark Weierman, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Jesse Winchester echo a sense of place and rebirth. Traditional folk songs, a capella swing tunes, and Shaker hymns round out their versatile repertoire, all delivered in their pure Kentucky blend.

A simple folk melody with lush, complex harmony is this Kentucky trio’s trademark. Violet Rae, Vickie and Roberta each bring something valuable to the creative process; each is an award-winning songwriter, accomplished instrumentalist, and talented singer. The women profess that singing together is thier reason for being, which is why they chose the name Raison D’Etre (meaning “reason for being” in French). Although they are best known for charming folk tunes with down-to-earth lyrics, they throw in the occasional swing tune like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” or “In the Mood” which lend themselves splendidly to the trio’s tight three-part harmonies.

New Edgecliff Brings Sedaris and True Theatre together This Christmas

THE SANTALAND DIARIES meets trueCHRISTMAS

New Edgecliff Theatre has revamped its annual antidote to the holidays, pairing David Sedaris’ THE SANTALAND DIARIES with an offering from True Theatre called trueCHRISTMAS.

The Carnegie’s Joshua Steele returns to THE SANTALAND DIARIES, chronicling the real-life observations of renowned NPR commentator and memoirist Sedaris as he encounters crazed Santas, obnoxious parents and queasy children, while working his first New York job – as one of Santa’s Elves – in the very nexus of commercial Christmas and Holiday Cheer, Macy’s Santaland.

After intermission, the very dark companion piece to THE SANTALAND DIARIES (SEASON’S GREETINGS) will be replaced by the highly regarded True Theatre, bringing its own brand of storytelling to the stage, as people from all walks of life share their own real-life stories of the holidays in TrueCHRISTMAS. Each weekend, three new storytellers will be featured.

True Theatre has developed a loyal following in its two-year existence, presenting several evenings of storytelling in the Know Theatre’s underground, often with a theme tied to various holidays, (“True Independence”, “True Foolishness”, etc.), most recently with “True Hunger” (on the eve of our most gluttonous time of the year).

NET Artistic Director Jim Stump says, “As much as we hate to see SEASON’S GREETINGS go – it was, for many in our audience, their favorite of the two acts – we just couldn’t resist the idea of pairing Sedaris’ own true story with other true holiday stories.”

New Edgecliff Executive Director and founder Michael Shooner adds, “We keep working to keep the Christmas slot fresh for returning audiences as well as new ones. With that in mind, the pairing of THE SANTALAND DIARIES and trueCHRISTMAS is an absolute no-brainer. We can’t wait to see how it plays!”

Intended for mature audiences only.

Know Theatre Previews BIG GAY DANCE PARTY for GLSEN Greater Cincinnati

Know Theatre of Cincinnati is happy to partner with GLSEN Greater Cincinnati for a Pay-What-You-Can preview performance benefit of ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S BIG GAY DANCE PARTY, Friday, November 25 at 8:00pm. This special Pay-What-You-Can preview is first-come, first served, with tickets available beginning at 7:00pm at the Know’s 1120 Jackson Street performance space. Proceeds benefit the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network of Greater Cincinnati, dedicated to assuring that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S BIG GAY DANCE PARTY by Aaron Loeb follows Ms. Harmony Green’s fourth-grade class as it presents a new take on the traditional Christmas pageant in a rural Illinois town. The production sets off a firestorm of controversy when it calls into question Honest Abe’s sexual orientation — based on historical facts. The thought-provoking, laugh-out-loud funny, and uniquely American story unfolds, offering surprises at every turn. Each of the three acts lets the audience see the story from a different character’s viewpoint. Oh, and of course, there’s plenty of big gay dancing!

The production contains adult language and situations and is appropriate for PG-13 audiences.

GLSEN Greater Cincinnati works to provide safe spaces for all students through events like its annual LGBTQ Youth Summit (in September) and Prom (May 5, 2012), as well as the newly launched weekly Youth Group designed for all high school youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, questioning or allied to build friendships and explore identity while promoting a community founded upon equality, acceptance and diversity. CCM Continues A Must-See Mainstage Season with OKLAHOMA!

Renowned alumna Pamela Myers returns to CCM
for this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, running Nov. 17 -20.

CINCINNATI, OH — The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) presents an All-American classic as it continues its Mainstage Series with the production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!. Presented Nov. 17 through Nov. 20 at Corbett Auditorium, the musical features celebrated guest artist Pamela Myers, an original alumna of CCM’s Musical Theatre program.

Based on the play Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs, Oklahoma! was the first collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, and the musical first premiered on Broadway in 1943. Set in Oklahoma Territory in 1906, it tells the story of the romance between cowboy Curly McLain and farm girl Laurey Williams, as both Curly and the sinister Jud Fry vie for her heart.

Director and Choreographer Diane Lala is thrilled to take on this timeless classic, and she feels it will serve as an invaluable learning experience for all of the students involved. One of the most popular musicals of all time, Lala asserts that, “the reason Oklahoma! gets done so many times is because it’s just so good.” Her choreography stays basically true to that of the original by Agnes De Mille, but with a distinctly CCM flair. Lala’s goal is to highlight the revolutionary choreography that made Oklahoma! so unique, stating that “the dancing came out of the characters – the dances weren’t just numbers that interrupted the show, they actually let you know more about the characters and the dream ballet really advanced the plot.”

CCM is excited to welcome Tony Award-nominated alumna Pamela Myers back to CCM for this production. Myers will be playing the role of Aunt Eller in all five performances. For senior Julia Johanos, who is playing the role of Laurey Williams, the opportunity to collaborate with an accomplished professional has been both fulfilling and fun-filled. “It’s been really inspirational for all of us,” says Johanos. “She’s never afraid to just jump into something.”

For senior John Riddle, this production’s Curly McLain, the learning experience has had additional significance due to the fact that Myers was the first graduate of CCM’s acclaimed Musical Theatre program. “It’s been really special to have that person with us who paved the way for what the program has become,” says Riddle.

Johanos is also very appreciative of the opportunity to perform a classic musical as well-known as Oklahoma!, which she feels has something to offer all generations. “Oklahoma! is a classic, but Diane has taken it in a really exciting direction.”

“In the first 20 minutes you’ve got big hit songs and it’s so wonderful to hear them in their context. There’s a lot of history that goes with it,” says Lala. CCM’s production of Oklahoma! promises to delight audiences with its classic tunes and show-stopping dance numbers.

About Pamela Myers*
Myers was the first graduate of the CCM Musical Theatre Program developed by her voice teacher Helen Laird and Dean Jack Watson. After graduating she went to New York and was cast in Company, the Stephen Sondheim musical, for which he wrote her a song. She was then nominated for a Tony award for her performance in that production.

Myers has starred in regional theaters around the country in such shows as Harold and Maude, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Sunday In The Park With George, I Do I Do, Annie Get Your Gun, Steel Magnolias and back to Broadway for the revival of Into The Woods. She additionally had the pleasure of working with Charles Schulz creating the role of Peppermint Patty in Snoopy. She appeared with Marvin Hamlisch and Jerry Herman on In Performance At The White House on PBS and guest starred on numerous TV shows such as Happy Days, Alice, Starsky and Hutch, Major Dad and Sha Na Na. Myers has also guest starred with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, and the Carnegie Hall Tribute to Judy Garland.
