Know’s 18th Season Launches into 2016 with Timely Drama BLACKTOP SKY

Directed by Kimberly Faith Hickman

“You may not be fully aware of the times we’re living in.”

After witnessing police harass a fellow resident of the housing projects, 18-year-old Ida befriends Klass, an unpredictable young homeless man she finds sleeping on a bench between the institutional high-rises. As their unlikely friendship grows, Ida must choose whether to embrace the struggle for justice within her neighborhood, or to chase a new life elsewhere with her upwardly mobile boyfriend, Wynn.

Know Theatre is proud to present BLACKTOP SKY, an intense, personal look at the intersection of love, violence, community, and justice on the line between poverty and true homelessness.

Playwright Christina Anderson makes her Cincinnati debut with BLACKTOP SKY. A Resident Playwright of New York’s New Dramatists, her work has previously appeared at The Contemporary American Theater Festival, Penumbra, Yale Rep, A.C.T., The Public Theater, Crowded Fire, and other theaters throughout the country. American Theater Magazine selected Anderson as one of the fifteen up-and-coming artists “whose work will be transforming America’s stages for decades to come.”

Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford was moved to bring Christina Anderson’s work to Cincinnati audiences because, “when I read BLACKTOP SKY, I was struck by the poetry of the language, the visual poetry of the stage directions, and the gut wrenching timeliness of the story. Christina is a young playwright with a voice that needs to be heard, and this play is a compelling snapshot of early 21st century America. It flips from humor to heaviness at the speed of life. It’s a kind of play we need more of.”

To bring BLACKTOP SKY to life, Know Theatre is proud to announce the return of director Kimberly Faith Hickman, whose work was last seen at the Know in 2014’s The Twentieth-Century Way, which CityBeat’s Stacy Sims called “an impeccable production… precisely the reason why Know Theatre is worth supporting long into the future.”

About returning to Cincinnati, Kimberley says “The Know offers unique stories in the most interesting ways.  It’s a theatrical playground for artists and audiences alike, so I am thrilled to return and direct this play! BLACKTOP SKY examines one of the most important issues in our society right now.  I can’t imagine this story being told anywhere else.”

BLACKTOP SKY gives Know Theatre the opportunity to showcase three stellar young talents in their Know Theatre debuts. Aziza Macklin joins the cast as Ida, after spending last season as part of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s Acting Internship program. Joining her is Kameron Richardson (Klass), a senior Musical Theatre major at University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music whose work has previously been seen in both Pittsburgh and St. Louis. Making his professional theatre debut is Landon Horton (Wynn), a senior playwriting major at Northern Kentucky University.

Know Theatre’s resident design team will transform our MainStage space into the courtyard of an urban housing project, with the audience surrounding the space on three sides, creating an immersive space for Ida’s story to unfold.

BLACKTOP SKY opens January 29 at 8 PM. Join us for this unforgettable story about the choices we make to survive and the collateral damage that can come from those choices.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents a Gripping Drama with the Regional Premiere of GROUNDED, January 26-Feb. 14, 2016

ETC_Grounded logo(Cincinnati, OH) The second half of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s 30th Anniversary Season soars to new heights with the regional premiere of the captivating drama GROUNDED by George Brant. This gripping and powerful story is experienced through the fierce eyes of a female fighter pilot whose unexpected pregnancy changes the course of her career in the sky. Brace yourself for this award-winning, one-woman thriller, playing January 26-February 14, 2016. Directed by Michael Evan Haney. Premiere Sponsor is LPK.

An unexpected pregnancy ends an ace fighter pilot’s career in the sky. Reassigned to operate remote-controlled military drones in the Middle East from a windowless trailer outside Las Vegas, she hunts terrorists by day and returns to her family each night. As the pressure to track a high-profile target mounts, the boundaries between the desert in which she lives and the one she patrols half a world away begin to blur. The struggle to navigate her dual identities may be her toughest mission yet.

“The story of GROUNDED is intensely human,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “George Brant has created an extremely beautiful template for a very unsettling story. We’re battling with drones and intelligence more than with boots on the ground. Michael Haney demonstrates his amazing talent directing this kind of dramatic, one-person material. The relationship ETC has had with him over the years has been nothing but terrific.”

CCM Appoints Rebecca Bromels to Arts Administration Faculty

Bromels currently serves as director of engagement for ArtsWave,
following a 12-year tenure at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
Her appointment at CCM becomes effective in August of 2016.

Rebecca Bromels.

CINCINNATI, OH—A familiar face within Cincinnati’s arts community will be joining the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s (CCM) highly regarded Department of Arts Administration this fall.

CCM Dean Peter Landgren has announced the appointment of Rebecca Bromels to the position of Assistant Professor of Arts Administration. Her appointment becomes effective in August of 2016.

Bromels currently serves as director of engagement of ArtsWave, the Greater Cincinnati region’s local arts agency and the nation’s largest community campaign for the arts. With the help of tens of thousands of donors, ArtsWave supports more than 100 arts and community organizations. These beneficiaries include CCM, which has been able to enhance its community engagement efforts through ArtsWave’s Community Partnership grants. In her position at ArtsWave, Bromels oversees volunteer programs and signature events including Macy’s Arts Sampler.

Having moved to Cincinnati in 1999 to pursue a directing career, Bromels discovered her love for arts administration during her 12-year tenure at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. As managing director for eight seasons, she worked to broaden the company’s base of support and provide resources for its innovative productions of Shakespeare and the classics.

Bromels joined ArtsWave shortly after its evolutionary change to impact-based funding and was instrumental in developing the organization’s new messaging and brand identity as director of communications.

She has also directed plays for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, the SERIALS project at Know Theatre of Cincinnati, New Edgecliff Theatre and St. Croix Festival Theatre in Wisconsin. In addition, she served as a guest lecturer in arts administration at Miami University and for the United Way BOLD board training program. In 2016, she will co-author a Corporate Arts Challenges Tool-Kit for Americans for the Arts.

Bromels holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance from Texas Christian University. She was recognized in the “Forty Under 40” class of 2005 by the Cincinnati Business Courier. She lives with her husband and two children in St. Bernard.

In his announcement of the hire, Landgren commented, “In my initial discussions with Rebecca, it became clear that she was committed to partnering with our faculty to advance CCM’s already remarkable Arts Administration program to even greater prestige. I am confident that her extensive theatre background and strong interpersonal skills will be a boon to CCM students and faculty alike.”

Utilizing the combined resources of CCM and UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business, the Department of Arts Administration offers one of the few joint MA/MBA arts administration programs in the United States. The highly selective program boasts a 100% job placement rate for its past seven years of graduates.

Who’s NOT Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

CSP_Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf logo2CenterStage Players – That’s Who!

Come see this award winning play which is seldom produced because of its difficulties.

A biting dark comedy and gut-wrenching psychological portrait of the breakdown of a marriage, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has been a mainstay of American theater since winning the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1962–63 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Its stars won the 1963 Tony Awards for Best Actor and Actress as well. It was also selected for the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Drama by that award’s drama jury. However, the award’s advisory board – the trustees of Columbia University – objected to the play’s then-controversial use of profanity and sexual themes, and overruled the award’s advisory committee, awarding no Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1963. It was later immortalized in a film adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Written by the acclaimed Edward Albee, the story follows George and Martha, a middle-aged couple who invite a younger husband and wife over for drinks and, over the course of the evening, use their guests as pawns in increasingly cruel mind games, leading to a devastating revelation. Razor-sharp dialogue and incisive character portraits make Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? one for your theatrical bucket list.  Now Lynne Aronson directs a brilliant new production for CenterStage Players.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for Seniors/Students/Military and are available at www.centerstageplayersinc.com.

Show dates:  February 5, 6, 11, 12 & 13 at 8PM and February 7 at 3PM.

The Cast:

  • George – Bill Keeton
  • Martha – Julie Poux
  • Nick – Michael Gettinger
  • Honey – Kiya Fix

Don’t miss this production!  You may not be able to ever see it anywhere else!
