Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Announces the 2017 PROJECT38 Festival Featuring 38+ Student Shakespeare Events, Workshops, and Performances – now with Shakespeare’s Globe!

CSC_PROJECT38 Best 5Join Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and thousands of students for a week of 38+ free arts events in downtown Cincinnati!

CINCINNATI, OH, March 30, 2017 –  Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is pleased to continue their groundbreaking arts education initiative titled PROJECT38 with the public FREE PROJECT38 Festival!  CSC teaching artists have spent over 250 hours this school year working with over 1,600 students at more than 45 different schools to bring each of Shakespeare’s 38 plays to life in creative ways.  On April 20-23, 2017 all of the Cincinnati community will get to experience these amazing performances at a weekend-long free festival in downtown Cincinnati!  Running from Thursday, April 20 and concluding on Sunday April 23 (Shakespeare’s birthday), Memorial Hall will be full of 45 hours of free arts events for the entire community! Additional free Performances and Workshops will occur in Washington Park on Sunday April 23, in celebration of the Bard’s birthday. Last year, the PROJECT38 Festival drew over 5,000 people to OTR.

Student Performances will run in blocks from 9:00am-5:30pm and present Shakespeare through every medium imaginable: dance, computer animation, snap chats, dramatic adaptations, visual art, puppet shows, and much more! These performances will give students the chance to perform in Memorial Hall’s newly renovated theater. Director of Creative Education and PROJECT38 Artistic Director, Jeremy Dubin said “This year we are working with more schools than ever before, well beyond the 38 we originally envisioned (we’d change the name of the project, but, you know, we already had the t-shirts). We are seeing a wider variety of mediums than ever before, from traditional performance, to music, to dance, to visual art and make-up design (on display in the PROJECT38 Gallery), to a feature-length Shakespeare film!”.  All performance are free and opens to the public.

GLOBE Workshops and Performances: Mr. Dubin continues to say “most exciting of all, PROJECT38 has gone international. While we unhesitatingly aver that our Teaching Artists are the best in the city, we would never be so presumptuous as to claim they’re the best in the world. So we’ve brought in the best in the world. CSC has partnered with none other than Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The Globe was incredibly excited when they learned about PROJECT38, and this past fall sent out two of their practitioners to run a series of workshops for our P38 Teachers and Teaching Artists, equipping them with knowledge, insight and exercises to take with them into the classroom throughout the year.  The experience was simply too amazing not to share, and so during this year’s festival we will have two more Globe practitioners in residence, running workshops for students, teachers, and even interested members of the public. Exciting, right? But wait, there’s more! One of the practitioners is also an official Globe Storyteller, and throughout the festival will be giving Storytelling performances of some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.”

Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

The cast features Joey Schnell in the title role of Shrek, with Katelyn Reid as Princess Fiona, Matt Santeler as Donkey, Brett Parr as Lord Farquaad, and Brad Baldwin as Pinocchio. Matthew 25: Ministries Presents MALCHUS, AN EASTER STORY by Reverend Wendell Mettey

A Reader’s Theater Rendition of the Easter Story as Told by Malchus, the High Priest’s Servant

MISC_Matthew 25 Ministries logo

April 3, 2017  CINCINNATI, OH – Matthew 25: Ministries, an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization located at 11060 Kenwood Road in Blue Ash, presents Malchus, an Easter Story by Reverend Wendell Mettey at 7:00 PM on April 13th.  Who was Malchus, the high priest’s servant whose ear was cut off by Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane?  Why did John feel compelled to mentioned him by name in his Gospel and what part in the larger story of Easter could he have played?  Join us at Matthew 25: Ministries on Maundy Thursday, April 13 to experience the Easter story in an entirely new way, as seen through the eyes of a real person who witnessed the story first hand.  Malchus, an Easter Story adheres closely to the Gospel story and portrays the events as they actually took place, while exploring possible relationships and interactions between the characters that help the audience to see the characters as human and to appreciate the struggles these people went through, better identifying with them and understanding the motives that may have caused them to act in the way they did.

Malchus, an Easter Story is based on the short story Malchus originally written by Matthew 25’s Founder and President Reverend Wendell Mettey as part of a collection of stories (Meet Those Who Met the Master pub. 2012) about people in the New Testament who met and were affected by Jesus.  Malchus, an Easter Story is performed in reader’s theater style, on stage and set against a backdrop of beautifully rendered scenic sketches by local set and encounter designer Joe Leonard, who also designed and created Matthew 25’s Global Village Experience.

Malchus, an Easter Story will be performed Thursday, April 13 at 7:00 at Matthew 25: Ministries – 11060 Kenwood Road Cincinnati, OH 45242.  The performance is free and open to the public.  More details available at http://m25m.org/event/maundythursday/.

M A I N S T A G E

MARIAN: THE TRUE STORY OF ROBIN HOOD by Adam Szymkowicz
Regional Premiere: Second Production Ever!
Directed by Alice Flanders
July 29-August 19, 2017

Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (very few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of troubles? Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle. A play about selfishness and selflessness and love deferred and the fight. Always the fight.

A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing, hilarious new take on the classic tale, from the author of 2015’s Hearts Like Fists.

10 words or less: Smash the patriarchy in this genderbending reimagining of a classic.
Rated: PG-13.

THE ARSONISTS by Jacqueline Goldfinger
directed by Tamara Winters
National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere
September 22-October 14, 2017

Set deep in a Florida swamp, THE ARSONISTS is a father-daughter tale of grief, loss and redemption. Inspired by the Greek tragedy Electra, this play with music is a contemporary American myth that explores the relationship between parent and child in that small space between death and life, the last breath before the awakening.

10 words or less: When arson’s your job, things get lost in the fire.
Rated: PG-13.

Neil Gaiman’s NEVERWHERE adapted for the stage by Robert Kauzlaric

Richard Mayhew, is a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life. That life is changed forever when he discovers Door, a young woman bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her—and that act of kindness plunges him into another world.

Richard slips through the cracks in reality and lands in London Below—a world of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels that exists in a labyrinth beneath our feet. If Richard is to ever return to his normal life, he must join the journey to save Door’s world—and find a way to survive.

Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel is translated to the stage with signature Know Theatre style.

10 words or less: A dark urban fantasy adventure from a modern literary master.
Rated: PG-13.

SUPERTRUE by Karen Hartman
World Premiere
January 19-February 10, 2018

On the porch of an almost-charming cabin in the Catskills, two New Yorkers reckon with the moment when Plan A fades away but Plan B has not emerged. In other words, they’re turning forty.

Janelle’s a teacher in crisis. Martin’s a computer programmer who’s aged out of being a wunderkind.

This funny and earnest play explores the meaning of family, and the things we do for the people and things we love.

The world premiere of a magical, heart-filled comedy which was featured on the 2015 KILROYS LIST of most recommended new plays by women and transgender authors.

10 words or less: Funny things happen in the woods.
Rated: PG-13.

KILL MOVE PARADISE by James Ijames
directed by Piper Davis
Regional Premiere!
March 2-24, 2018

KILL MOVE PARADISE takes the Elysium of Greek antiquity and flips the script. Set in a netherworld prepared for its newly deceased inhabitants, we follow Isa, Daz, Grif and Tiny as they try to make sense of the world they have been “untimely ripped” from and this new paradise they find themselves in. Inspired by recent events, Kill Move Paradise is a expressionistic buzz saw through the contemporary myth that “all lives matter” and a portrait of the slain, not as degenerates who deserved death but as heroes who demand that we see them for who they are.

Know Theatre brings this incisive new play to the stage in one of the first productions to follow its world premiere at Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre this spring.

10 words or less: Black Lives Matter.
Rated: R.

ADA AND THE ENGINE by Lauren Gunderson
directed by Tamara Winters
Regional Premiere: Second Production Ever!
April 13-May 12, 2018

As the British Industrial Revolution dawns, young Ada Byron Lovelace (daughter of the flamboyant and notorious Lord Byron) sees the boundless creative potential in the “analytic engines” of her friend and soul-mate, Charles Babbage, inventor of the first mechanical computer. Ada envisions a whole new world where art and information converge – a world she might not live to see. A music-laced story of love, friendship, and the edgiest dreams of the future. Jane Austen meets Steve Jobs in this poignant pre-tech romance heralding the computer age.

Know Theatre reunites the creative team behind Lauren Gunderson’s 2016 hit Silent Sky for a companion piece about another little-remembered woman of science who changed the way we all see the world.

10 words or less: In the 19th Century, Ada Lovelace dreams our modern world.
Rated: PG.

The Ohio Arts Council helps fund Know Theatre with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

Know Theatre is also supported by The Carol Ann & Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, helping to change our communities for the better through collaboration and innovation, and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, which provides a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving.

Know Theatre is a member of Theatre Communications Group and an Associate member of the National New Play Network.
