Aronoff Center – Procter & Gamble Hall

CINCINNATI, OH – The spellbinding artistry and amazing athletics of the Golden Dragon Acrobats will thrill audiences and children alike at the Aronoff Center’s Procter & Gamble Hall on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 PM as part of Cincinnati Arts Association’s 2017-18 Presenting Season.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than twenty-five centuries ago. The company’s reputation is solidly rooted in a commitment to the highest of production values and an attention to artistic details that is unparalleled in the art form. World-renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music, and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and beauty.

Performing feats on chairs stacked ten-stories high, the troupe has traveled to all fifty states and to more than sixty-five countries on five continents. The Golden Dragon Acrobats have received two prestigious New York Drama Desk Award nominations for its Broadway performances. A five-week run at Broadway’s New Victory Theater in 2014 marked the only time an acrobatic troupe from China was chosen to perform twice at this prestigious venue.

The ancient art of acrobatics has developed into one of China’s most popular art forms. As well as evolving into many forms of performance – dance, opera, martial arts, and sports – acrobatics has served an important role in the cultural exchange between China and Western nations. The citizens of China continue to present their acrobatic art for the world today, in order to portray their hard-working nature and set forth an example of the rich traditions of Chinese culture.

The group’s founder, producer and director Danny Chang, is one of the world’s leading promoters of Chinese acrobatics. He began his training at the age of eight with his family’s acrobatic school in Taipei and began performing with its touring wing, the Golden Dragon Acrobats, at age ten. He is the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Medal for International Faith and Goodwill by the Republic of China’s Coordination Council for North American Affairs.

“When the Golden Dragon Acrobats come to town, the wonders stack up,” reviewed The New York Times. “Cathedrals of contortionists in backbend rise before your eyes, body by body. Human obstacles, which tumblers flip over, widen in person-size increments. The thrill is escalation. These touring acrobats from China know how to keep topping themselves.”

SWING!
Original Concept by Paul Kelly
Original Direction and Choreography by Lynn Taylor-Corbett
Playing March 30 – April 15, 2019

High energy beats and fast paced dance moves are hallmarks of swing music, which exploded out of pre-war Harlem’s hotbed of youth culture and became a worldwide phenomenon. The genre crossed racial and cultural barriers to bring us popular dances like the Lindy Hop, the Jive and more. SWING! celebrates this remarkable diversity to the beat of the most exhilarating songs of the period. But as this enthralling song-and-dance show makes abundantly clear, swing was never a time or place – it has always been a state of mind.

Eight Performances:
Saturday, March 30, 7:30pm ● Sunday, March 31, 3pm
Friday, April 5, 7:30pm ● Saturday, April 6, 7:30pm ● Sunday, April 7, 3pm

“The theatrical supply business is one where a huge opportunity exists to turn technology and data science into an operational advantage,” says Boyer. “We can move this business forward in all aspects including purchasing, marketing, and inventory. I’m excited to see the kind of impact we can make as we re-launch the business.”

Since acquiring the Theatre House this past November, he has already overhauled the company’s website – www.theatrehouse.com, developed new branding, and reopened the Theatre House’s retail store. He’s also spent a great amount of time getting to know TheatreHouse customers and meeting with vendors.

“Above all we want to help people share their stories. There are amazing people out there who every day are bringing creative stories to life,” said Boyer. “Prop masters, costume designers, make-up artists, lighting supervisors and more – and we’re here to play a supporting role in helping them, any way we can.”

The Theatre House is located at 400 West 3rd Street, Covington, KY 41011.  Retail store hours are 1:00 to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays.  For more information, or to place an order, call (859) 293-2277 or visit www.theatrehouse.com.

The Lines of Lust, Love and Trust in the Digital Age Blur in SEX WITH STRANGERS

HRTC_Sex with Strangers2

Jennifer Johansen & Ben Palacios. Photo by Heather N. Powell.

The Human Race continues its 31st Season with Laura Eason’s SEX WITH STRANGERS, February 1 – 18, 2018 at the Loft Theatre

“Who are you?” These are the first words spoken in Sex with Strangers, and pretty much summarize the play. In this digitally-dominated age, knowing a person’s true identity can be tricky. When I first saw this show in New York, I was intrigued by the cat-and-mouse, sexually charged relationship, and believed it would speak to our modern audience. Warning: it will get a bit steamy on stage, but what a way to warm up in the cold Miami Valley winter!” Kevin Moore, President & Artistic Director

(Dayton, OH) —This February, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) is heating up the Loft Theatre with the hottest play in the country, Sex with Strangers. Failed novelist Olivia meets Ethan, a celebrated (and much younger) writer made famous by his sexcapade tell-all blog, at a snowbound bed and breakfast, and their mutual attraction quickly gets hot and heavy. As a weekend tryst develops into a long-term romance, their personal and professional lives collide. Ethan seeks legitimacy, dismissing his bad boy reputation as nothing more than an invented character. Olivia has her doubts, but craves the literary fame Ethan can offer her. Ambition, identity and trust are in play when online personals clash with real world expectations in this smart, steamy take on modern love.

WARNING: Sex with Strangers contains partial nudity, strong language and adult themes.

The roles of Olivia and Ethan are being portrayed by Jennifer Johansen and Ben Palacios.  They were last seen in The Human Race production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike – performed at the Victoria Theatre.  “Besides both being exceptional actors,” said Kevin Moore, “they already had experienced a degree of intimacy on stage, since their characters, the self-absorbed Masha and her hunky boy-toy Spike, were continually pawing at each other.”

Greg Hellems (HRTC’s The Glass Menagerie, Band Geeks!, and Best of Broadway), returns to The Race to direct Sex with Strangers.

Laura Eason (Playwright) is the author of 20 plays, original works and adaptations, a musical-book writer and screenwriter. Selected productions include Sex with Strangers (Second Stage, NYC; Signature Theatre, DC; Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago; Sydney Theatre, AU; published by Overlook Press), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Hartford Stage, CT; New Victory, NYC) and many more. As a screenwriter, Laura wrote on seasons two and three of the Emmy-winning Netflix show House of Cards.

The preview performance of Sex with Strangers is Thursday, February 1. Opening night is Friday, February 2.

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM

Our cast of two are veteran Human Race Theatre actors.

Jennifer Johansen (HRTC’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, A Christmas Carol and God of Carnage.) is “Olivia.” This will be Jennifer’s fourth show with The Human Race Theatre. Ben Palacios (HRTC’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, National tour of Fifty Shades of Grey parody, Spank!, starring as America’s favorite BDSM billionaire. TV credits include Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party and Tosh.0.) is “Ethan.” This is Ben’s second production at The Human Race Theatre.

Eric Moore (scenic designer), Head Carpenter, designs his fourth show at The Human Race. Costume designer Stormie Mac is delighted to be joining HRTC for the first time. Resident Artists John Rensel (lighting designer) and Jay Brunner (sound designer) round out the design team. Lexi Muller is the production stage manager.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Sex with Strangers is sponsored by Barbara N. O’Hara, Dr. Robert L. Brandt, Jr., MD, Rob and Lessa Comparin, and John and Tamara Clough.
