Broadway’s Tony Award-Winning Hit Comedy Prepares to Wreak Havoc in Cincinnati, November 27 – December 2

BIC_The Play That Goes Wrong promo1

On Sale Now!

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, the hilarious Tony Award-winning hit Broadway comedy, will make its Cincinnati debut at the Aronoff Center, November 27 – December 2 as a part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati 18/19 Season presented by TriHealth. Tickets are on sale now at the Aronoff Center box office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS.

Co-written by Mischief Theatre company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is a riotous comedy about the theatre. The play introduces The ‘Cornley University Drama Society’ who are attempting to put on a 1920s’ murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong…does, as the accident-prone thespians battle on against all odds to get to their final curtain call.

Entertainment Weekly calls THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG “Hilarious! Non-stop pandemonium.” The Huffington Post calls it “The funniest play Broadway has ever seen!” And the New York Post says it’s “Broadway’s funniest and longest-running play! Nothing is as fall down funny. GO.”

The Broadway production of THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG opened at the Lyceum Theatre on April 2, 2017. The show, which was slated to close on Broadway in August of this year, will extend its run due to popular demand through January 6, 2019. By then, the Broadway production will have played 27 previews and 745 performances, making it the 2nd longest running show in the history of the Lyceum Theatre. THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG received a Tony Award for Best Set Design, Broadway.com’s Audience Choice Award for Best Play, and the Theater Fans Choice Award for Best Play.

Awarded the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, 2014 WhatsOnStage Best New Comedy and 2015 UK BroadwayWorld Best New Play Awards, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG  is now in its fourth year in the West End, is currently on a 30 week UK tour and playing on six continents. The producers have avoided Antarctica for fear of a frosty reception.

It is a remarkable rags-to-riches story for a play which started its life at a London fringe venue with only four paying members of the public at the first performance, and has gone on to play to an audience of over 2 million people around the world.

Mischief Theatre, the Olivier Award-winning theatre company led by Artistic Director Henry Lewis and Company Director Jonathan Sayer, was founded in 2008 by a group of graduates of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and began as an improvised comedy group. Mischief Theatre performs across the UK and internationally with improvised and original scripted work.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is directed by Mark Bell, featuring set design by Nigel Hook, lighting design by Ric Mountjoy, sound design by Andy Johnson and costume design by Roberto Surace.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG  is produced on Broadway by Kevin McCollum, J.J. Abrams, Kenny Wax, Stage Presence Ltd., Catherine Schreiber, Ken Davenport, Double Gemini Productions / deRoy-Brunish, Damian Arnold / TC Beech, Greenleaf Productions / Bard-Roth, Martian Entertainment / Jack Lane / John Yonover, and Lucas McMahon.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG will play the Aronoff Center from November 27 – December 2, 2018: Tuesday – Thursday at 7:30PM, Friday at 8:00PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM, Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM. Tickets start at $31 and are available at the Aronoff Center Box Office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS. Know Theatre continues our 21st Season FEAR ITSELF with a SecondStage World Premiere: MARY’S MONSTER

KTC_Marys Monster logoMARY’S MONSTER
Written and performed by Maggie Lou Rader
September 14-23, 2018

The dead can come back to us.
But they don’t always come back nice.

On a dark night near the end of her life, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley wrestles with ghosts: her dead children, her family, her famous husband Percy, her mother, and Frankenstein, her most famous creation. Death has loomed over her entire life, and now, shovel in hand, she will make peace with it, one way or another.

Exploring the complicated biography of the woman who redefined horror, this new play written by and starring Maggie Lou Rader (Marian, Pulp, Silent Sky, Hearts Like Fists, and Know’s Education Director) takes the stage for 8 performances only from September 14-23, 2018.

Taking the helm as director is acclaimed local actor and director Jen Joplin. Know’s Producing Artistic Director, Andrew Hungerford, takes on scenic, lighting, and sound design duties, with costumes by Know’s Resident Costume Designer, Noelle Wedig Johnston.

Says Andrew,

One of my favorite things is shepherding new work from page to stage. At the Know we’re a pretty nimble organization and can get the ball rolling quickly. It’s thrilling to be able to take a work from conception to audiences in just a few short months, and it’s our fantastic group of artistic collaborators that make it possible.

Why a play about Mary Shelley, and why now?  Here’s what writer and performer Maggie Lou Rader has to say,

This is a woman who wrote the first Science Fiction novel, and, for me, epitomizes the Gothic Horror genre. Without Mary Shelley, how many of our favorite stories and fandoms simply wouldn’t exist? And yet, she was forced to fight for authorship of her most famous work her entire life, not for the fame, but simply for the funds to provide for her son. It would be fabulous to say we’ve grown, changed, learned from the sexism of our past. We haven’t. We refuse to be allocated to the romance section, because there’s more to our narrative than serving as a love interest, and our stories don’t end at marriage.

A woman invented contemporary Science Fiction. A woman epitomized the genre of Gothic Horror. History and pop culture bastardized her creation. This is me giving them back to her, because, it’s Mary Shelley’s turn.

So grab a shovel, and let’s see what we can dig up this September in Mary’s Monster.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents Regional Premiere Musical FLY BY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 1-29, 2018

ETC_Fly By Night logo

(Cincinnati, OH) Grab your guitars and look to the stars! Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati begins its 2018-2019 Season with the charming regional premiere of Fly By Night written by Kim Rosenstock, Will Connolly, and Michael Mitnick. This enchanting musical sparkles with humor and heart as two sisters follow their stars to New York City’s stage and food service industry where the light of love leads to unexpected discoveries about fate and fortune. Playing September 1-29. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers. Production Sponsor is The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

In this darkly comic rock-fable, a gypsy prophecy propels melancholy sandwich-maker Harold and two bewitching sisters through a star-crossed journey of love and connection. Featuring a catchy score and inventive story-telling, this sweeping ode to young love culminates during the Northeast blackout of 1965 and is a tale about finding light in a world beset by darkness.

Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers says: “Having ended last season with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I wanted to start this season with a musical celebrating the universal language of music. Fly By Night is a beautiful parable about fate—about accepting the good in our lives as well as the bad. Somewhere mixed up between the earth and the sky is our destiny. A lot of it is up to us, but a lot of it is about making sure we’re looking up to the stars for guidance.”

JALZ – Just When You Forgot Why You Stay Out of the Water

QCF_Jalz logo(CINCINNATI) – Queen City Flash, presents the quintessential Summer Blockbuster, JALZ, told by the man who lived it, from the Alzheimer’s wing of his nursing home.

Dylan grew up hearing the story from her grandfather: the summer of the attacks, his adventure at sea, that final, deadly confrontation. But his memory is failing, and his tales don’t match the town’s memory of their alcoholic Chief of Police who disappeared one summer to hunt “sea monsters.”

Family legacy takes on new life as Dylan recreates her grandfather’s tales in a final attempt to jolt his memory in this  deep-sea thriller where the only thing scarier than a monster is losing your mind.

The show features local actors Daniel Britt, Hannah Sheppard, and Jordan Trovillion, with script and original music by Trey Tatum, directed by Bridget Leak.  Queen City Flash (Ken Ham’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Complete Tom) invites you to enjoy the final weeks of summer with them, out on open water, in this new & final chapter of a Classic Summer Flick.
