The 5th Annual Cincinnati ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL Runs Aug. 4-6

CINCINNATI, OH– The CINCINNATI ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL (#1MPF) returns to for its fifth year, in partnership with Know Theatre of Cincinnati. The 5th Annual Cincinnati #1MPF runs three performances only; August 4th, 5th, and 6th at 8pm. All performances are at Know Theatre of Cincinnati (1120 Jackson St) Tickets, priced at $20, are available at knowtheatre.com.

About THE ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL
THE ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL (#1MPF) is America’s largest and longest running grass roots theatre company, founded by Producing Artistic Director, Dominic D’Andrea . #1MPF is a social barometer project, which investigates the zeitgeist of different communities through dialogue, consensus building and a performance of 50-100 short moments generated by each community. #1MPF works in partnership with theatres and/or social organizations sharing playwright, educational or community-specific missions across the country. The aim is to create locally sourced playwright-focused community events, with the goal of promoting the spirit of radical inclusion. #1MPF represents playwrights of different age, gender, race, cultures, and points of career. The work attempts to reflect the theatrical landscape of local artistic communities by creating a dialogue between the collective conscious and the individual voice. 

In each city, #1MPF works with partnering organizations to identify programs or initiatives in each community to support with the proceeds from ticket sales. The goal is to find ways give directly back to the artists in each community. Supported programs have ranged from educational programming, youth poetry projects, theatre program in prisons, playwright residencies and memberships, playwrights salaried commissions, community access projects, arts workshops and other social and artistic initiatives.

Cincinnati Lab Theatre Announces 2019 NEW WORKS FESTIVAL July 19-28

CLT_logoCINCINNATI, JULY 1, 2019 — Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s New Works Festival will present two fully staged workshop productions and two original play readings in a rotating festival repertoire over two weekends, July 19 – July 28, 2019. All performances will be presented in Cincinnati at the Liberty Exhibition Hall, 3938 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, OH.

Cincinnati LAB Theatre is now in its sixth producing season. Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s past productions include Buckeye and Judas by Elizabeth a. Harris, Led Thespian by Jason Podplesky, The Hired Man by Heather Meyer, An Evening with Stephen Crane by Phil Paradis, Medusa in You by Valetta Anderson, and Identity: An Evening of Three Twenty-Minute Plays by Elizabeth a. Harris, Brian Griffin, and Leah Strasser. Cincinnati LAB Theatre also produced Led Thespian at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Part of Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s mission is to provide playwrights with opportunities to develop their work through a traditional workshop process, while utilizing some of the area’s finest professional actors. Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s New Works Festival is comprised of two different series that will present new and innovative works in various stages of development, encourage open and honest discussions, and allow audiences an inside look into the creative process.

WORKSHOP SERIES: The New Works Festival Workshop Series will present two brand-new fully staged workshop productions:

LAB_The Color of the Leaves logoTHE COLOR OF THE LEAVES by Isaiah Reaves. Directed by Carolyn Guido Clifford.
Set in the 1940’s, THE COLOR OF THE LEAVES, is a dark examination of family dynamics, personal freedom, and what it means to be a woman, fighting for her very existence, in a male dominated world.
Performances: July 19 and 27 at 8:00pm; and July 21, at 7:00pm.

We can reach someone on the other side of the world with just a tap of a button; then why do we feel ever more alone? Through satire and allegory A FUNNY PLAY FOR TROUBLED TIMES explores commerce, media marketing, and the disconnected of the connected. You’re sure to find yourself in these funny troubled times.
Performances: July 20 and 26 at 8:00pm; and July 28 at 7:00pm.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Isaiah Reaves (Playwright, THE COLOR OF THE LEAVES) BFA playwriting major at Northern Kentucky University, is Cincinnati’s most produced young playwright. His 2018 Cincy Fringe hit The Blackface Project was a Citybeat Critic’s Pick. Also, Reaves’ original plays The Black Boy in Pink, The Color of the Leaves, and Pickaninny are being fully staged in 2019.

Carolyn Guido Clifford (Director, THE COLOR OF THE LEAVES) is a multi-disciplinary theatre artist in Cincinnati, OH. She currently serves as the Community Engagement Manager at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. She directed My Geriatric Uterus and Kill You with my Love at Cincy Fringe 2019. Her play The A-List received a workshop reading at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

Charlie Schulman (Playwright, A FUNNY PLAY FOR TROUBLED TIMES) is a playwright, television-writer, musical-theater writer and Off-Broadway producer. He is the Co-Writer/Producer of the Off-Broadway musicals “The Fartiste” (Outstanding Musical NYC/Fringe International, Off-Broadway) and “Goldstein” (Nominated Best Off-Broadway Musical 2018 by The Off-Broadway Alliance Awards) now available from Stage Rights and BroadwayRecords.com. Charlie teaches at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is on the MFA faculty at Spalding University.

Elizabeth a. Harris (Director, A Funny Play for Troubled Times) is co-founder and coartistic director of Cincinnati LAB Theatre. She possesses a BA in acting, a MA in Theatre with an emphasis in directing, and a MFA in playwriting. She has been a practicing professional theatre artist for 28 years. Elizabeth has worked for such theatre companies as Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, and Flat Rock Playhouse and has had several original works produced in Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. Elizabeth served as Artistic Director of New Edgecliff Theatre from 2003 to 2006. Her play Daughter of War was Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s first workshop staged production.

Dale Odegard makes money running ‘You Too Can Break Into Show Business’
workshops. Dale’s son, Brian, is a Saturday Morning TV star. What most people don’t
realize is that Dale had nothing to do with his son’s success. After not seeing each other for ten years, Brian appears. Too young to direct on his own movie, Brian seeks someone who will obey his every command, and figures his loser dad will do anything for a chance at success. Both Dale and Brian are stubborn and self-absorbed. Getting to know each other is not going to be easy. However, over time, Dale begins to realize this second chance at a dream pales in comparison to this second chance at being a dad.

A contemporary comedy, THE SECRET LIFE OF BROS begins with two gym buddies, Dude and Bro. As Dude prepares for his impending wedding, that upcoming weekend, Bro is trying to figure out how to dump the ‘f***boy’ he has been seeing. When Bro decides to follow Dude’s advice and attempts to dump the ‘f***boy,’ a myriad of secrets and feelings unravel, jeopardizing Dude and Bro’s friendship. THE SECRET LIFE OF BROS is an unfiltered examination at male relationships and how the perceptions of those closest to us affect how we see ourselves.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Stephen Jared (Playwright, THE APARTMENT ON YUCCA) is a Cincinnati native who grew up going to the cinema almost every weekend. He moved to Los Angeles at twenty-one, where he’s since worked in movies and television. He’s written six novels. His first play became a semi-finalist in the 2018 Garry Marshall Theatre’s New Works Festival. His latest, THE APARTMENT ON YUCCA, is receiving its first staging thanks to the LAB Theatre of Cincinnati.

Michael Shooner (Director, THE APARTMENT ON YUCCA) Cincinnati native and alumnus of Edgecliff College, Michael co-founded New Edgecliff Theatre in 1998, and performed in NET’s inaugural production – Eric Bogosian’s one-hander, Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll. He continued to perform in productions there, including David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre and Peter Shaffer’s Equus. He received critical recognition for his performances as Teach in David Mamet’s American Buffalo and as Ralph in Bryony Lavery’s Frozen. Other roles include Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross and Cliff in The Woolgatherer. An Actor’s Equity member since 1977, he has appeared locally with Cincinnati Playhouse and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and, while in Seattle, with One Reel Vaudeville and Tacoma Actor’s Guild. Look for him in the upcoming indie feature, The King of Bloody Fookin’ Britain. Working primarily as an actor, this is his first time in the chair since David Folie’s Naked by the River at NET.

Nathan Top (Playwright, THE SECRET LIFE OF BROS) is a Cincinnati-based playwright and musician. Nathan works as a freelance trumpeter and pianist, performing in big bands, pit orchestras, and pop groups throughout Cincinnati. He holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance from University of Idaho. Nathan has collaborated with several playwrights as composer/lyricist, as well as musically directed several shows and workshops. THE SECRET LIFE OF BROS is his first play.

Alexa Glaser (Director, THE SECRET LIFE OF BROS) holds a B.A. in Theatre from Butler University, graduated the Sanford Meisner Center’s Level One Intensive, and is a graduate of CCM Prep’s Certificate Acting Program. Previous Credits: Matty in Cincinnati LAB Theatre’s The Hired Man, Betta in New Edgecliff Theatre’s Soldier’s Christmas, and Samantha in EFO Films Marauders.

Step Into the Cage Alongside the GIRL IN THE RED CORNER at Know Theatre

A warrior woman finds her fire and fights for her future.

Unemployed, fresh off a dead-end marriage, and searching for a way to take control of her life, Halo walks into a gym and signs up for mixed martial arts lessons. As she prepares for her first match, Halo realizes that life inside the cage and outside the cage are disturbingly similar. And that the only way to survive either is to fight.

Heart-pounding action meets tense family drama in the Know’s Season 22 opener, GIRL IN THE RED CORNER, by Stephen Spotswood.

Directed by Know Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters, GIRL IN THE RED CORNER is an unflinching look at the grit and guts of female MMA fighters, as well as the collateral damage of life in working-class America.

Halo’s life is chaos. She’s lost her job, her marriage, and her sense of direction. With nothing left to lose, she walks into a mixed martial arts gym and asks for lessons.

Halo’s trainer thinks she’s a lightweight. Her mom and her sister think she’s lost her mind. But as she trains, Halo gets a glimpse of a way out of a dead-end life.

Yet as the date of her first big fight draws nearer, Halo discovers you can’t just walk away from where you come from. Sometimes, the world outside the ring bleeds through. And when that happens, you just have to stand and fight.

Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters returns to the director’s chair for this visceral and personal regional premiere. Stories about women who fight their way through to a better future are becoming Tamara’s stock-in-trade – from 2015’s Hearts Like Fists to 2016’s Silent Sky, as well as last season’s swashbuckling Susan Swayne & The Bewildered Bride and the upcoming Lasso of Truth in 2020, about the complicated creation and lasting legacy of Wonder Woman.

When asked what it was about this story that demands to be told, right now, she said:

This is a story for anyone who has had enough. Enough of people making them feel small. Enough being made to believe that they should settle for the hand they’ve been dealt. Enough believing that where you were has to determine where you’re headed.

But it’s also a story that lays bare the lie that everyone starts from an even playing field. This play exposes the forces that keep us down and keep us fighting each other instead of fighting against those who would hold us back: the forces of addiction, generational poverty, gender barriers, forgotten communities.

And it’s also a story about what it takes to become whole again. About what happens when you rekindle the fire inside, put order to the chaos, and discover not just what’s worth fighting for, but who you need in your corner to survive.

GIRL IN THE RED CORNER features a cast of actors every bit as fierce as the show’s characters.

Starring as Halo, local favorite Tess Talbot makes a triumphant return to the Know stage. Audiences who loved her as feisty occultist Alicia in last season’s Mercury, as the titular genius Ada Lovelace in Ada & the Engine, and as Joseph Smith’s rebellious child-bride Lula in Listen for the Light won’t want to miss what happens when she steps into the cage.

The spellbinding Jen Joplin appears as Terry, Halo’s embattled mother, following her memorable appearance as Virginie, the “witch in the woods,” in 2018’s The Man-Beast on the Know’s Mainstage and as herself in her own one-woman show, The MILF Also Rises, at the 2019 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

Know newcomer Abi Esmena comes out swinging as Halo’s tough-as-nails MMA trainer, Gina.

Longtime friend of Know Mindy Heithaus returns to the MainStage for the first time since 2016 as Brinn, Halo’s long-suffering big sister and mother to a 12-year-old whom she believes is becoming much too like her wildhearted aunt.

And rounding out the cast is Adam Tran as Brinn’s husband Warren and Gina’s trainer Kyle. Adam was last seen at the Know in our Season 21 opening Duncan Sheik/Kyle Jarrow musical Whisper House as the lovelorn-yet-stalwart Yasuhiro.

The incomparable k. Jenny Jones joins the fray as Fight Director to shape the physical world of this play, where the boundaries between the ring and the real world blur and the emotional arcs hit as hard and fast as the fists will fly. A Master Teacher of stage combat, k. Jenny Jones is internationally known for her contemporary unarmed fighting style, and is the only woman in the U.S. inducted into the College of Fight Masters by the Society of American Fight Directors.

Loveland Stage Company’s BUGSY MALONE JR

BugsyJr 24x36 posterThe Loveland Stage Company has begun production of its summer children’s musical BUGSY MALONE JR which opens on July 12 and continues for two weekends.   Director Pia Rider is using her experience to skillfully unify a young (ages 8 to 18 years) and talented cast which is delightfully frolicking through this hilarious musical. In addition to coaching the young performers, award-winning members of the Loveland Stage Company are teaching children hands on technical skills in producing and presenting a stage show. Bugsy Malone is a musical for kids by kids to be enjoyed by kids at heart!

BUGSY MALONE JR is based on the hit 1976 movie film, starring Scott Baio and Jodi Foster, and featuring a catchy, swinging score by Paul Williams, the composer of The Muppet Movie.  Our story, written by Alan Parker, is about the rivalry of two gangs in a fictitious New York borough in the 1920’s gangster era.

As the curtain raises, our hero, Bugsy Malone (played by Rowan Nelson) walks to center stage and comments on the scene in the voiceover style of the 1940’s noir films. The Hoods gang, who work for Dandy Dan (played by Seth Patterson), is hunting down members of rival mobster Fat Sam’s gang (Fat Sam is played by Brandon Ressler). The Hoods splurge Roxy the Weasel (played by Marco Cramer) who works for Fat Sam with a mysterious new device that fires a lethal dose of silly string! After Roxy is splurged and carted off stage, Bugsy tells the audience that “something fishy in going on” but assures the audience that “by the final curtain I’m thinking everything will turn out A-OK”.

The Chorus Girls introduce Bugsy to the audience with the tune “Bugsy Malone”, and he invites the audience into Fat Sam’s speakeasy, The Grand Slam. Bugsy is immediately smitten with Blousey Brown (played by Nicole Stocks), a new girl auditioning to be a singer at the club. The Hoods break into The Grand Slam and pandemonium resumes. Bugsy, hiding under a table, talks Blousey into a dinner date. Bugsy continues to woo her and to avoid the gangland wars in the fallowing scenes. In the following scenes, Blousey auditions at the Bijoux Theatre competing with headliner Lena Marelli (played by Grace Guthrie) and back at The Grand Slam competing with Fat Sam’s girlfriend, Tallulah (Carissa Palazzolo). Bugsy tells Blousey that she is a sensational singer and “New York is all washed up. Hollywood is where you should be.”

Fat Sam meets with his gang and explains that they need to get their hands on a splurge to defeat their rivals and leaves his gang to figure out how to get a splurger. Just then, Dandy Dan’s gang enters and wipes out the rival gang with silly string. In desperation Fat Sam hires Bugsy to find a new gang. Bugsy succeeds in recruiting men from the docks and arming them with highjacked splurgers.   The gangs face each other, and a standoff occurs but Bugsy convinces the two gangs that they’re more powerful as friends than enemies with the song “You Give a Little Love.” Bugsy presents Blousey with the tickets to Hollywood, the two embraces and everything turns out A-OK as the curtain falls.

The award-winning members of the Loveland Stage Company that are teaching and coaching the actors and technical crew include Producers Jonathan Eckman, Jill Gornet and Charlie Rader along with Musical Director Stephanie Mackris and Choreographers Marjory Clegg and Alex Rader.

Unemployed, fresh off a dead-end marriage, and searching for a way to take control of her life, Halo walks into a gym and signs up for mixed martial arts lessons. Her trainer thinks she’s a light-weight. Her mother and sister think it’s just plain weird. Very quickly the lessons she learns in the ring bleed into the rest of her life and Halo finds herself battling against everyone around her.

As she prepares for her first match, Halo realizes that life inside the cage and outside the cage are disturbingly similar. And that the only way to survive either is to fight.

Behind-the-Scenes in Season 22

Gender Parity
The Know is committed to gender parity in the playwrights we produce, as well as in the makeup of our creative teams. Season 22 is our fourth season in a row with at least 50% of the plays in the MainStage season written by women. Additionally, this season marks the third in a row where 60% or more onstage roles are specifically for female or non-binary actors.  

Nationally, only 30% of new plays produced in the 2018-19 season were written by women (up from 26% in 2017-18). We believe that it is part of our ongoing responsibility to change that statistic.

Accessibility
In our continuing efforts to make theatre accessible, regardless of economic circumstance, we are keeping our base ticket price for MainStage shows at just $25, with $15 rush tickets for anyone 10 minutes before curtain as long as seats are available. We’re also continuing our Welcome Experiment for Wednesday night performances, with $10 tickets available for advance reservation, and half of the seats available as walk up tickets, free of charge. The cost of a ticket inherently limits who is able to attend live theatre, and we believe that theatre should be for everyone.

Living Wage
Know Theatre is committed to efforts to pay all artists in our MainStage season a living wage. In order to help make that possible, we also offer a $35 living wage ticket for those patrons of higher economic means. Artist pay defines who gets to make theatre, and by continually pushing to increase wages, we help empower voices that would otherwise be silenced.

And here’s what Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford has to say about Season 22:

“When we settled on the theme Fear Itself for our 21st season, we knew that we’d need to follow it up with something equally compelling, and equally drawn from the zeitgeist.

To me, The Fight is not just about the themes that we’re putting on stage, it’s about what we’re doing behind the scenes.

How do we combat economic inequality through the art we make? How do we ensure that everyone gets paid a fair wage? How do we fight for more underrepresented voices? How do we get a better quality of life for all? As a small theatre company that’s continually challenged with doing more with ever fewer resources, how do we change the world?

And how, while doing all that, do we make the best work possible for our community?

I think the plays we have in this season encompass all those thoughts in a beautiful way. So maybe we won’t change the whole world, but in this collection, I think we’ve got at least one show this season that can change your world.  And that’s the first step.
