BLEACHERS On Sept. 11

CPI_Bleachers logoBLEACHERS
Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative
Sept. 11
Aronoff Center Fifth Third Bank Theatre [Downtown]

Written by Leo Bradley

Bleachers is a romp back into some local and national history of “America’s Pastime,” enhanced by some very sing-able tunes—as if Roger Miller had had season tickets to Crosley Field. Baseball’s uniqueness has given it a special place in the life of our nation. Just about every other major sport—football, basketball, soccer, tennis—is played “horizontally,” from side to side. Baseball alone features circular patterns that keep it interesting despite its more leisurely pace than the aforementioned. That’s why a visit to the ballpark is as much social occasion as a spectators’ event.

Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative (CPI) is a grassroots, non-profit arts organization of Tri-State playwrights, directors, actors, and theater supporters dedicated to developing new plays written by local playwrights. CPI strives to provide a forum for playwrights to explore the possibilities contained within their work by providing a community of playwrights within which individual initiative can seek its fullest expression.

Human Race Theatre Company
Sept. 6-23
The Loft Theatre [Dayton]

Directed by Margarett Perry

It’s 1989 and a battle for the soul of Major League Baseball is brewing between Commissioner Bart Giamatti and Pete Rose, the reigning Hit King and manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Rose is accused of betting on baseball–even on his own team–an allegation he denies despite the mounting evidence. The intellectual Giamatti wants Rose’s confession, while the larger–than–life Rose wants the Commissioner to believe his denials. This collision of wills comes to a head as they meet face to face. If the charge proves to be true, “Charlie Hustle” could be banned from the game–for life–leaving a black mark on the sport both men love and forever tarnishing a living legend.
