The Classic CYRANO Noses its Way to the Arts Center of Dunham Free Family Fun Series

MISC_Arts Center At Dunham logoCINCINNATI, OH – January 25, 2019 — Courtesy of a grant from Price Hill Will Arts CAT, the Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham resumes with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Cyrano, part of its Off the Hill series on Saturday, February 2 at 2 pm.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a master of swordplay and wordplay, but a “magnificent Mount Everest of a nose” blocks his path to true love with the beautiful Roxane. When tongue-tied Christian, who’s also in love with Roxane, can’t find the words, he borrows Cyrano’s to woo her. But is she falling for Christian’s looks or Cyrano’s soul? This tricky love triangle untangles into a chaotic romance complete with duels, panache, sacrifice — and an enormous schnoz.

Cyrano is a youth-oriented adaptation based on the 1897 classic play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. The play has endured more than a century because of its beloved, noble hero and the tragicomedy of the story’s love triangle. Its themes of virtue, conviction and the conflict between inner and outer beauty make it ideal for younger audiences.

Off the Hill is sponsored by The John C. Griswold Foundation and KeyBank. Seasonal support of education and outreach by The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation. The Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company is supported by Jerry and Betsy Shroat. The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.

All Free Family Fun Series performances are on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. The remaining series includes:

  • March 2, 2019
    Cincinnati Ballet
Dancers from the prestigious Cincinnati Ballet will provide an exciting peek into the typical day in the life of professional dancers. Audience members will learn the fundamentals of the art of ballet and gain an understanding of the discipline and athleticism required for a professional career in ballet. A dance demonstration with audience participation and a question and answer discussion are included.
  • April 6, 2019
ROKCincy Opera for Children: “Little Red Riding Hood”
ROKCincy presents the fairy tale we all know and love, but with uniquely ROKCincy twists and humor. The performance is 40 minutes in length and includes a Q&A session with performers afterward. ROKCincy, Roundabout Opera for Kids: Cincinnati, is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.
  • May 18, 2019 Five Little Monkeys by Ernie Nolan, adapted from the series of books by Eileen Christelow and performed by the Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill Productions. Going shopping, baking cakes, sitting in trees and jumping on beds. Mayhem ensues in this zany plat told in cumulative verse as five silly simian siblings insist on doing things their own way. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Marquee Season Shows at Covedale Center for the Performing Arts:

DRIVING MISS DAISY By Alfred Uhry
September 5 – 29, 2019

The Deep South, 1948 – just prior to the civil rights movement… Having demolished another car, Daisy Werthan, a rich, sharp-tongued widow of seventy-two, is informed by her son that she must now rely on a chauffeur. The son hires a thoughtful black man, Hoke, whom Miss Daisy immediately regards with disdain. Over the next twenty-five years, the two grow close and more dependent on each other. Steadily the dignified Hoke breaks down the stern defenses of the old lady. She teaches him to read and write, and eventually invites him to join her at a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. At the end, Hoke has a final visit with Miss Daisy, now in a nursing home, where it is movingly clear that they have both have more in common than they ever believed possible—and that the times would ever allow them to publicly admit. Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize, this is a great American play with heart, humor and humanity. Greg Procaccino, Director; Angelica Ortiz, Stage Manager

THE ADDAMS FAMILY
Book: Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice; Music and Lyrics: Andrew Lippa
Oct. 17 – Nov. 10, 2019

It’s creepy and it’s kooky!! It’s a hilarious musical! It’s every father’s nightmare! Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And worse, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia! Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents. All the lovable characters (and the musical theme) from the classic TV show are here, along with great songs like, ““When You’re an Addams”, “Where Did We Go Wrong?”, “Just Around the Corner”, “Live Before We Die” and “Tango de Amor”!
Bob Brunner, Director; Ron Attreau, Music Director; Jeni Schwiers, Choreographer; Jenny Lutes, Stage Manager

District Series Shows at The Warsaw Federal Incline Theater

ROCK OF AGES
Book by Chris D’Arienzo; Music arranged by Ethan Popp; Music orchestrated by Ethan Popp; Original arrangements by David Gibbs; Musical Director, Henry Aronson.
September 26 – October 13, 2019

It’s the end of the big, bad 80’s and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace, and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last venues – a place where sexy Stacee Jaxx reigns and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage while he longs for small-town girl Sherri. But the decade’s rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end. Can Drew, Sherri, and the gang save the 80’s? With monster hits songs like, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Don’t Stop Believing”, ROCK of AGES lets the party go on forever! Nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Doug Berlon, Director; Greg Dastillung Music Director; Jules Shumate Choreographer; Steven Ducker, Stage Manager
