Potential for some Monday rehearsals later in the process.

Production Dates –
February 23rd & 24th @ 7:30pm
February 24th & 25th @ 2:00pm

Roles –
(There is potential for some doubling of roles)

Penelope Sycamore (F) (40+) – Usually goes by Penny, Penelope is the mother of Essie and Alice, wife of Paul and daughter of Martin. She writes plays and paints as hobbies because it makes her happy, but is terrible at both. Penny is a loving mother and wife who is constantly concerned with the welfare of her family. Her main goal is to make sure that everyone is happy, particularly her daughter Alice.

Essie Carmichael (F) (24-30) – Wife of Ed, daughter of Penny and Paul Sycamore, Granddaughter of Martin, sister of Alice. She is child-like. As a hobby she makes candy that Ed sells. Essie dreams of being a ballerina. She has spent 8 years studying with Boris Kohlenkhov, but is a terrible dancer.

Rheba (F) (24-40) – The maid and cook to the Sycamore family. She is treated like a part of the family. She is dating Donald.

Alice Sycamore (F) (18-28) – Fiance of Tony Kirby, daughter of Paul and Penny, Granddaughter of Martin, sister of Essie. She seems to be the only “normal” family member. She has an office job, and is rather embarrassed by the eccentricities of her family, yet she still loves them. She tends to be a pessimist.

Miriam Kirby (F) (45+) – Wife of Mr. Kirby, mother of Tony. She is an extremely prim and proper woman and is horrified by the goings-on in the Sycamore household. Her hobby is spiritualism.

The Grand Duchess Olga Katrina (F) (40+) – She was one of the Grand Duchesses of Russia before the Revolution, another being her sister, the Grand Duchess Natasha. Since then she has been forced to flee to America where she has found work as a waitress in Childs Restaurant. The rest of her family has had a similar fate, such as her Uncle Sergei, the Grand Duke, who is now an elevator man. She loves to cook as a hobby. This character will appear later in the play, and the actress needs to be able to be a bit over-the-top, but not overdo it.

Gay Wellington (F) (25+) – An actress whom Mrs. Sycamore meets on a bus and invites home to read one of her plays. She is an alcoholic, gets very drunk and passes out shortly after arriving at the Sycamore’s home.

Martin Vanderhof (M) (60+) – Referred to mostly as grandpa in the play. Father-in-law to Paul, father of Penny, grandfather of Alice and Essie. He is an eccentric happy old man who has never paid his income tax because he doesn’t believe in it, as he feels that the government wouldn’t know what to do with the money if he paid it. Once a very successful businessman, he left his job 35 years prior for no reason other than to just relax. He lives his life by the philosophy “don’t do anything that you’re not going to enjoy doing”. He goes to circuses, commencements, throws darts, and collects stamps.

Paul Sycamore (M) (40+) – Father of Essie and Alice, husband of Penny, son-in-law of Martin. He is a tinkerer who manufactures fireworks in the basement with the help of his assistant Mr. De Pinna. His hobby is playing with erector sets.

Tony Kirby (M) (18-28) – Fiancé of Alice, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby. He sees how, even though the Sycamores appear odd, they are really the perfect family because they love and care about each other. His own family is very proper and has many issues none of them will admit. He is vice president of Kirby and Co.

Ed Carmicheal (M) (24-30) – Husband of Essie, son-in-law of Paul and Penny. He is a xylophone player, and distributes Essie’s candies. Ed is an amatuer printer who prints anything that sounds “catchy” to him. He prints up dinner menus for his family and communist pamphlets that he places in the boxes of Essie’s candy. He also likes to make masks.

Mr. De Pinna (M) (30+) – The ice man who came inside to speak to Paul eight years before and never left. He helps Mr. Sycamore build fireworks, and moonlights as a model in Mrs. Sycamore’s paintings. **Could be Mrs. De Pinna

Anthony Kirby (M) (45+) – Husband of Mrs. Kirby, father of Tony. He is a very proper man who is president of Kirby and Co. and secretly despises his job. His hobby is raising expensive orchids. He is also a member of the Harvard Society, the Union Club, the National Geographic Society, and the Racquet Club.

Donald (M) (24-40) – The boyfriend of Rheba, who seems to serve as volunteer handyman for the Sycamores.

Boris Kohlenkhov (M) (30+) – A Russian who escaped to America shortly before the Russian Revolution. He is very concerned with world politics, and the deterioration of Russia. He is the ballet instructor of Essie, aware that she is untalented at dancing, but knows that she enjoys dancing so he keeps working with her. He likes the Greeks and the Romans, questions society, and is interested in world affairs. He is opinionated and often loudly declares that something “stinks”!

Wilbur Henderson (M) (25+) – An employee of the IRS. He comes to collect the tax money owed by Grandpa, and can’t understand why the latter won’t pay income tax.

G-Man 1 “The Man” (M) (18+) , G-Man 2 “Jim” (M/F) (18+), G-Man 3 “Mac” (M/F) (18+) – Three agents who come to investigate Ed because of the communist things he prints up, such as “God is the State – the State is God”.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER

July 10 – August 4, 2024
Book by: Rick Elice
Music by: Wayne Barker, Lyrics by: Rick Elice

Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair… and the bonds of friendship, duty and love. A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Stacy Searle, Director
Greg Dastillung, Music Director
Zac Holman, Choreographer

*Actors who are excited for a collaborative exploration of movement based character work are strongly encouraged to audition! Non-singing actors are also encouraged to audition.

Roles include:

THE ORPHANS:

Boy (Peter): Male Identifying, 16-25, A boy who doesn’t miss much. Nameless, homeless, and friendless at the beginning of the play and a hero by the end. A survivor. More than anything in the world, he wants a home and a family. British dialect.

Prentiss: Male Identifying, 16-25, Ambitious, hyper-articulate, logical; yearns to be a leader, even as he knows in his heart that he never shall be one. A bit of a blowhard with just the teeny-tiniest touch of cowardice. British dialect.

Ted: Male Identifying, 16-25, Obsessed with food: the eating of, the fighting over, the dreaming about. A natural actor, an easy wit, perhaps a future poet. Called “Tubby” by Prentiss, though not necessarily due to girth, of which orphans, given their meager diets, usually have very little indeed. British dialect.

THE BRITISH SUBJECTS:

Lord Leonard Aster: Male Identifying, 25-60, The very model of a Victorian English gentleman, loyal subject to the Queen, devoted father to Molly, faithful friend. Lord Aster is a Starcatcher – protecting the planet from unseen incredible forces about to encroach upon us. British dialect.

Molly Aster: Female Identifying, 16-25, A 13-year-old British girl who is hungry for adventure and out to prove that girls can do anything boys can do–and do it better; she is as passionate as she is fearless, a true leader. Sings a solo; Vocal range is mix/belt, A3-C#5. British dialect.

Mrs. Bumbrake: Female Identifying, 20-60, Molly’s nanny. Lovably brash and bold British nanny with a big heart; a character with character, hard-scrabble and charmingly no-nonsense, but still knows how to turn on the flirt when the time is right. Sings a solo; Vocal range: B2-F#4, or potential falsetto to E5 if possible. British & Scottish dialects.

Captain Robert Falcon Scott: Male Identifying, 20-60, The epitome of an adventurer, Captain of Britain’s fastest frigate, the Wasp. Years later, he will lead an expeditionary team to the South Pole, freeze to death, and become the iconic British hero, Scott of the Antarctic. British dialect.

Grempkin: Male Identifying, 20-65, The mean and malodorous schoolmaster of St. Norbert’s Orphanage for Lost Boys. Likes to keep his boys in the dark, as sunlight is known to feed rebellious notions.

THE SEAFARERS:

The Black Stache: Male Identifying, 20-55, Although well-spoken with the flair of a showman, the Black Stache is a dangerous villain to his very core; piracy is his personal mission, as is his eternal quest for a worthy nemesis–a hero who would be worthy of a challenge. Sings a solo; Vocal range up to F#4, British dialect.

Smee: Male Identifying, 20-65, Dedicated first-mate to Black Stache; single-mindedly dedicated to his captain’s every whim. His motto: “Tis good to be busy.” Sings a solo; Vocal range up to F4. Possibly plays the ukulele. British dialect.

Sanchez: Male Identifying, 20-65, A hard-working Spanish pirate with an identity crisis.

Bill Slank: Male Identifying, 20-65, The Neverland’s vicious captain, without the skill or quality to lead anyone but himself, and always into disaster. A greedy bastard who’d sell his own mother for a ship to command and send boys to their doom for the favor of those who would use starstuff for personal gain, global domination, or worse. An orphan, too. British and Tropical dialects.

Alf: Male Identifying, 20-60, An old seadog, far more proud of his rank as “Mister” than he should be. Although his physical appearance is oaf-ish and unkempt, he has an inner charm and a kind, romantic heart. Blue-collar English dialect.

Mack: Male Identifying, 20-65, A very bad sailor who wants to be anywhere but under the thumb of Bill Slank.

THE MOLLUSKS:

Fighting Prawn: Male Identifying, 20-65, King of the Mollusk natives and the son of Jumbo Prawn and Littleneck Clam, Fighting Prawn is kidnapped by British sailors and brought in chains to England where he served as sous-chef. Since returning to his island kingdom, he has vengefully murdered any English person who dared set food on his island. British and Tropical dialects.

Hawking Clam: Male Identifying, 20-65, Son of Fighting Prawn and Sweet ’n’ Sour Shrimp. One day, he will ascend the Clam throne as head of the Royal Clam Clan.

Teacher: Male Identifying, 20-65, Formerly a salmon, Teacher is now an ancient, knowledgeable mermaid.
