Casts Announced for THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) [REVISED] at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTTDW announces two casts for “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged)[revised]”

The Drama Workshop is happy to announce the casting for their summer production of “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” currently scheduled to run August 7 – 23 at the Glenmore Playhouse.

In a clever twist on the tradition approach for the play, Director Becky Collins has cast both an all-male and an all-female cast for the production.  The male cast will consist of Chris Bishop, Eric Thomas and Joshua Van Nort. The female cast features Peggy Allen, Patricia Mullins and Lindsey Pullum. The performers were cast via online auditions and call backs and will alternate performances throughout an expanded run of the play that will feature fourteen performances rather than the normal ten performances.

Dennis Murphy, TDW’s Production Vice President, applauds director Collins’ willingness to stage and rehearse two casts for this show. “Using two completely different casts will require more rehearsal time for Becky and assistant director Betsy Bossart, but it gives audiences the choice between two fresh and interesting ways to enjoy this modern and inventive comedy classic.”

Alternating casts is just one of the many changes TDW is adopting in order to keep production staff, cast members and audiences safe. The board of TDW has developed policies for both rehearsals and performances that allow TDW to meet all current standards for sanitizing and social distancing. The expanded performance schedule was adopted because the house size will be limited in order to allow six feet of space between audience parties. Additional measures will be taken in the house, lobby and ticketing operations to reduce the risk of infectious spread, and keep everyone safe, relaxed, and able to have a great time.

Jason Cox will design the show’s sound cues as well as produce the show. Dennis Murphy serves as assistant producer and lighting designer. CJ Bossart will design the set and serve as master carpenter.  Elaine Volker and David Karsner will provide props.

The Drama Workshop applauds Becky, Betsy, Jason, the production staff and the cast members for their courage to participate in TDW’s first pandemic-era production.

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC: Dorothy’s college friend Jean comes for a visit and Dorothy decides not to tell Blanche and Rose that Jean is a lesbian. Jean confides to Dorothy that she’s in love with Rose. Meanwhile, Sophia rents X-rated movies.

SISTERS OF THE BRIDE: Blanche’s brother Clayton arrives with a big surprise: his boyfriend, Doug. Blanche claims to have accepted Clay’s sexual orientation, but witnessing his relationship throws her for a curve. Meanwhile, Rose is determined to win the “Volunteer of the Year” award.

CHARACTERS:

  • BLANCHE is a vivacious, slightly promiscuous Southerner with a flair for younger men.
  • CLAYTON is Blanche’s younger brother. According to Blanche, he is just as “great looking, charming and irresistible to men” as his sister. Clayton, a divorcee, came into his own and proudly so as a gay man.
  • DOROTHY is a no-nonsense woman who worked as a teacher.. She often delivers stinging insults and sharp punchlines.
  • JEAN is intelligent and warm, but quiet compared to the lead quartet.
  • ROSE is a well-intentioned but very daffy woman who didn’t always understand the intricacies of speech.
  • SOPHIA is Dorothy’s mother and is as sharp-tongued as her daughter.

All the characters are in their 60’s, except for Clayton who is 45-55 and Sophia who is in her 80s. All gender identities are welcome to audition for any role.

The productions will benefit Ohio community theaters and therefore these roles are non-paid. The director, Richard Zenk, expects to begin rehearsals the week of June 29 with recordings the week of July 12th. Actors will be responsible for their costumes, hair, and makeup. Some assistance can be provided with wigs.

Email your theater resume and 1-minute video audition by June 24 to equalityproductionscincy.com.  State your name and the role for which you are auditioning at the start of the recording. Then record yourself in the character you chose. Do an internet search for inspiration.

“Let me tell you girls the three most important things I learned about life: number one, hold fast to your friends; number two, there’s no such thing as security; and number three, don’t go see Ishtar. Woof.” – Sophia

“Boy, I remember when I was a little girl we’d get depressed. Grandma could always cheer us up. She’d take out her dentures and she’d take a healthy swig from the aquarium, and then she’d put a flashlight under a chin, and we could watch the goldfish swim from cheek to cheek. We could have watched it all day… but visiting hours were only from ten to four.” – Rose

“My first was Billy. Oh, I’ll never forget it! That night under the dogwood tree, the air thick with perfume, and me with Billy. Or Bobby? Yes, that’s right, Bobby! Or was it Ben? Oh who knows, anyway, it started with a B.”  – Blanche

“Rose, he left me 38 years later for a stewardess that he met on a business trip to Hawaii. It was her first flight. They said, ‘On arrival, give the passengers a lei.’ She got confused, he got lucky, and they now live on Maui.” — Dorothy
