Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (Attempts to) Tackle Shakespeare’s Whole Canon … In One Evening with the Hilarious THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED)!

CSC_Complete Works promo1

Miranda McGee, Justin McCombs & Geoffrey Barnes. By Mikki Schaffner.

38 Plays. 90 Minutes. 3 Actors. All the best bits of the Bard.

Cincinnati, June 27, 2018 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company opens its 25th Anniversary Season with the comical Shakespeare send-up The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)by Jess Wingfield, Adam Long, and Daniel Singer, playing July 20 – August 11, 2018. The production is directed by CSC Associate Artistic Director, Sara Clark, and features Resident Ensemble Members Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, Justin McCombs, and Miranda McGee. This production reunites the cast from two previous comedy hit productions from CSC summers past: The Complete History of America (abridged) and All the Great Books (abridged). This production is generously sponsored by Beam Suntory.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) features three actors on a mission: to bring the entirety of Shakespeare’s works to life on the stage in one fell swoop. Gallop along with them as they careen wildly through all the comedies, histories and tragedies using a trunkful of props, wigs, and outrageous costumes – it’s a joyous Shakespeare jambalaya you definitely don’t want to miss. “If you like Shakespeare, you’ll like this show. If you hate Shakespeare you’ll love this show!” said The Today Show and The New York Times said this play is “Pithier than Python. Irresistible.”

Associate Artistic Director Sara Clark says of directing the production, “Directing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is always one of those ‘I can’t believe they’re paying me to do this’ sort of experiences. The script is wonderful…filled with actual jokes (not just references), so that even if you’ve never seen a Shakespeare play in your life, you still get to come along for the ride. Like all the best comedies, it’s fast, it’s deeply committed to the novelty of the conceit, and it offers three actors the opportunity to flex the full range of their comedic chops–verbal dexterity,  rapid-fire delivery, physical shtick, puns, goofy props, silly hats, boys in dresses…the list goes on.”

The cast features Miranda McGee, Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, and Justin McCombs all long-time members and fan favorites of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Resident Company of actors. This comedic trio returns to the CSC stage after hit performances of The Complete History of America (abridged) and All the Great Books (abridged) at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in 2015 and 2016 and Ms. McGee and Mr. McCombs have been splitting audience sides for over a decade in Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!).  CityBeat said of the trio that “all three are strong and versatile actors on Cincy Shakes’ stage and beyond, which makes it a delight to see them off of their leashes and yukking it up in a bawdy and lower-brow way.” And “together they seem to have a great deal of fun onstage, and their energy is infectious…the actors’ unflagging and inventive energy is more than enough to keep you entertained.”  The Cincinnati Enquirer agreed, “with a cast like this…All of them are inveterate laugh-chasers. If there is a laugh to be extracted from the material, they are very likely to find it.”

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) runs July 20 – August 11 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM, as well as Saturday August 11 at 2:00 PM.  Preview performances are July 18 and 19 at 7:30.

On Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5, bring your younger kids (4+) for artist-led childcare DURING the performance! The “Playdate” program is only $15 and free for subscribers. The option to add this program will be available as you are buying tickets for either of these show dates. Activities will range from Storytime to theatre games and crafts. Share the great benefits of CSC’s programming with your children: Playdate will style activities to correspond with each production, so even your youngest can join in the discussion on the ride home!

Single ticket prices range from $14-$54.  Previews on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19 are $30.  Advance student tickets are only $28 and day-of Student Rush tickets are $14 and may be purchased thirty minutes before a show with a valid student ID if available. This production is not part of this season’s subscription package but subscribers receive 15% off tickets and pay no fees. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the CSC Box Office at 513.381.BARD (2273) ext. 1, or go online at http://www.cincyshakes.com.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions Welcomes Madcap Education Center Director

MCP_Blaire Bartish

Blaire M. H. Bartish.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions announced today the appointment of Blaire M. H. Bartish to its management team. Bartish will serve as Director of the forthcoming Madcap Education Center, a new $4 million arts education facility in Westwood for one of the region’s fastest growing arts organizations.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions is the production and management company for the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts, the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater, Madcap Puppets and the Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre teen summer program.

For CLP, Bartish will oversee the opening and operation of the Madcap Education Center, including developing class and camp programs and special events, recruiting and hiring teaching artists, coordinating the performance schedule in the center’s performance hall and managing financial affairs and revenue development for the center.

Bartish has worked in arts/culture education throughout her career. Before coming to CLP, she worked as Manager of School and Public Programs for the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton. She’s also worked at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and as a public school teacher in Illinois.

She’s also well acquainted with the arts. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education with a Minor in Dance and Theater from Ohio Wesleyan University. She has also completed coursework (and is writing her final capstone paper) for her Masters in Education in Educational Policy Studies and Research from DePaul University.

“I am thrilled to join the CLP family and be able to share my love of performing arts with the Cincinnati community in general and Westwood specifically,” Bartish said. “I started movement classes as a 5-year old in the Chicago Park District and it totally changed the course of my life. I am hoping to do the same with the youth and adults in Greater Cincinnati.”

The Madcap Education Center will be home to exciting life-size puppet performances, a jumping off point for show tours but also a hub for classes, camps and performing arts education opportunities – in the heart of Westwood’s revitalized business district.

The Madcap Education Center will host:

  • children’s programming in its 124-seat theater
  • one-on-one vocal and instrument training in its small studio spaces
  • dance classes for a variety of skill levels in its two dance studios
  • acting and improv classes
  • puppet making and other arts/crafts classes in its art studio space
  • distance learning programming in its technology center
  • birthday parties
  • senior arts classes opportunities
  • neighborhood meetings and special events
  • the new home base for Madcap Puppets touring operations

The Education Center will be located across the street from Westwood Town Hall where CLP was born as Cincinnati Young People’s Theater in 1982.

Bartish and her husband Dave reside in White Oak with their son Louie.

Commonwealth Theatre at NKU Presents THE ODD COUPLE

CTC_The Odd Couple promo

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Back by popular demand, Neil Simon’s THE ODD COUPLE returns to Commonwealth Theatre Company (CTC), Northern Kentucky University’s own professional theatre, running July 6–22, 2018 at NKU’s Stauss Theatre.

This timeless comedy classic features Ken Jones as Felix Unger and George Alexander as Oscar Madison. When Felix moves in with recently divorced Oscar after his own marriage ends, it quickly becomes apparent that the roommates are complete opposites in their habits and lifestyles. Oscar is a sports writer who enjoys junk food and takes a certain pride in his sloppiness. Felix is a neat-freak photographer who cooks gourmet meals and is obsessed with removing each and every bit of dirt and disorder from Oscar’s apartment. Hilarity ensues as the two drive each other crazy – will their friendship survive in spite of their differences?

Mike King, director of THE ODD COUPLE, wanted a chance to work on a great script with a phenomenal cast. “Neil Simon is the greatest comic playwright of the last 50 years, and this is his greatest, most enduring play,” said King. “His craftsmanship with the structure of a comic line is unparalleled, but he is also capable of creating vivid characters that affect us.”

Ken Jones in his third time playing Felix at CTC believes he and the character share a lot in common. “I like order and structure,” said Jones. “I also like to cook and clean. And sadly, I don’t think I can relax. Oscar says that Felix ‘can’t relax and that he has clenched hair,’ so, in that moment, I feel like Oscar is talking to me as well.” Even with all his problems and issues, Jones thinks Felix is still a very lovable guy. “He carries a certain ‘charm’ within his misery.”

George Alexander, who has portrayed two other characters in past ODD COUPLE productions at CTC, finds Oscar to be relatable. “We’re both a bit messy, and we’re both a bit impatient [but] I’m much less confrontational.” While Alexander appreciates Oscar being upfront with people, he thinks the character can be a bit self-centered. “His world revolves mostly around him, although he clearly cares about his friends.”

The supporting cast of comedy standouts includes Kyle Gaskin (Vinnie), Mindy Heithaus (Gwendolyn), James Jones (Speed), Rachel Perin (Cecily), Charlie Roetting (Murray), and Spenser Smith (Roy). With professional training and experience in improvisation and comedy, each member brings their own special flare to the characters, providing unforgettable moments on stage.

THE ODD COUPLE is considered to be one of the classics of the American canon of theatre history. “Oscar and Felix have become a part of our culture through two stage plays, a movie, and two TV shows,” commented Mike King. “But they still have the ability to surprise us and make us laugh.”
