Those of us who braved the beginning of the sNOwSTORM were treated to a smartly-staged, epic tale.

Considering how dense the scripts are for Shakespeare’s History Plays, I was impressed with the clarity of the storytelling. There was a synergy to the production and a renewed, buoyant energy to the organization as a whole.

Andrew Hungerford’s experience with the space allows him to create a smart, minimalist set design combined with an excellent lighting design. Together they define such locations as the King’s Court and the bloody battlefields. The latter featuring well-staged and well-executed fight choreography by Bruce Cromer.

Brent Vimtrup gives a commanding performance as Lord Talbot. The scene with his son, John (played by late addition Patrick E. Phillips) before they return to battle was a highlight for me. Clearly enjoying their roles were Catilin McWethy as battle-loving Joan and the plotting pair of Suffok and Queen Margaret (Billy Chace & Kelly Mengelkoch.) Also well-done was the rivalry between Richard, Duke of York (the impeccable Giles Davies) and Somerset, smartly played by Justin McComs. In the title role, Darnell Pierre Benjamin does very well in portraying the too young King as he ages over the course of the play. I look forward to seeing him return to the role next season.

With the minimal set, the costumes, designed by Amanda McGee, popped on stage and did much to define the characters. Smart work by Wig Master James Geier as well.

A high-energy and clearly-staged epic, deftly helmed by director Brian Issac Phillips.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.

FYI, if you are interested to learn more about Joan of Arc, you may want to see Diogenes Theatre Company’s upcoming production of SAINT JOAN. The cast includes many names familiar to CSC audiences.

Mad Anthony Goes CAMPING WITH HENRY AND TOM

MATC_Camping with Henry and Tom logoHamilton, Ohio – Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Warren G. Harding crash their Model T into a tree – it’s not the set-up to a punchline, but rather the opening scene of Mad Anthony Theatre’s latest production. The Fitton Center’s resident theatre company stages CAMPING WITH HENRY AND TOM Feb. 18 to 21.

Inspired by a much-publicized 1921 trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, playwright Mark St. Germain ponders what might have happened if the three famous figures got lost in the woods, free to drop their public facades. President Harding wants to be with his mistress, industrialist Henry Ford wants to be President, and inventor Thomas Edison wonders how the three end up together on a camping trip in the Maryland woods. Exploring friendship, politics and leadership, Camping with Henry and Tom is a comedic and dramatic clash of two great minds and one great heart of the twentieth century.

“It’s a very witty play – the dialogue is quite clever, and there’s so much to work with in the characters,” Director Henry Cepluch said. “It was first staged in 1995, and set in 1921, but the sharp and insightful observations hold true 20 – or 95 – years later.”

Cepluch is retiring as artistic director of Mad Anthony this season; this will be his final production.

Tickets are $10. Thank you to series sponsor The Michael J. Colligan History Project at Miami University, event sponsors Judge Jack and Shirley Moser, and Sara Carruthers for providing series marketing support.

Prior to opening night, the Colligan History Project will present the latest event in its Staging the Past series Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7:30pm, as living history performer Hank Fincken assumes the persona of automobile mogul Henry Ford in the interactive play Henry Ford: Fit to a “T.” This event is free and open to the public.
