Hamilton, Ohio – Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Warren G. Harding crash their Model T into a tree – it’s not the set-up to a punchline, but rather the opening scene of Mad Anthony Theatre’s latest production. The Fitton Center’s resident theatre company stages CAMPING WITH HENRY AND TOM Feb. 18 to 21.
Inspired by a much-publicized 1921 trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, playwright Mark St. Germain ponders what might have happened if the three famous figures got lost in the woods, free to drop their public facades. President Harding wants to be with his mistress, industrialist Henry Ford wants to be President, and inventor Thomas Edison wonders how the three end up together on a camping trip in the Maryland woods. Exploring friendship, politics and leadership, Camping with Henry and Tom is a comedic and dramatic clash of two great minds and one great heart of the twentieth century.
“It’s a very witty play – the dialogue is quite clever, and there’s so much to work with in the characters,” Director Henry Cepluch said. “It was first staged in 1995, and set in 1921, but the sharp and insightful observations hold true 20 – or 95 – years later.”
Cepluch is retiring as artistic director of Mad Anthony this season; this will be his final production.
Tickets are $10. Thank you to series sponsor The Michael J. Colligan History Project at Miami University, event sponsors Judge Jack and Shirley Moser, and Sara Carruthers for providing series marketing support.
Prior to opening night, the Colligan History Project will present the latest event in its Staging the Past series Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7:30pm, as living history performer Hank Fincken assumes the persona of automobile mogul Henry Ford in the interactive play Henry Ford: Fit to a “T.” This event is free and open to the public.
