THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER Offers Heartwarming Tale

TDW_Best Christmas Pageant promo1

Mrs Bradley (Peggy Allen) introduces the Christmas story to the enthralled Imogene (Sami Williams) and Gladys (Katie Waldfogle) in TDW’s production of ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’, running through Dec 19.

(Cheviot, OH) The Drama Workshop’s production of the holiday classic, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER runs through December 19 at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave in Cheviot. The show offers Friday and Saturday evening performances beginning at 7:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees starting at 2 pm.

When the bullying, cigar-smoking Herdman kids find out that church is followed by free cookies, punch, and other refreshments, they show up in force, just in time to learn about auditions for the upcoming Christmas Pageant. When the Herdmans take key parts in the Pageant and collide with the Christmas story head on; the result will either be the most disastrous Christmas Pageant ever . . . or the best!

The show is written by Barbara Robinson, and is directed by an award-winning production team of director Ivory Mazur, producers Megan Schultheis and Gretchen Gantner, and stage manager Wendy Williams.

The cast includes Eric Thomas, Peggy Allen, Nora Daley, Griffin Harding, Ethan Williams, Sami Williams, Joe Hamzy, Sam Schaefer, Camden Doebeli, Katie Waldfogle, Eve Roth, Victoria Covarrubias, Michele Fortman, Amy Waldfogle, Richelle Roth, Claudia Covarrubias, Logan McGill, James Covarrubias, Gary Hohnecker, and Doug Bruening.

As the first show that TDW has done in many years featuring children, the group has focused on ensuring that the young actors have a positive experience as well as growing in their roles. Nora Daley plays Beth Bradley, the narrator of the show. “It’s just been really fun. All the kids are best friends now. But in the end I’d say the best thing in theater is knowing that you made someone smile. When someone sees a show it’s a chance for them to escape their problems and just laugh and enjoy themselves.”

The adults in the show echo Nora’s sentiments. Eric Thomas plays Bob Bradley, Beth’s father. “I’ve seen several TDW productions, but this is my first time working with them. I got to see what makes productions here so special: the people! The dedication to excellence among the behind-the-scenes crew here is extraordinary. The audience will love this play.”

Adult tickets for THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER are $16 each when ordered in advance, or $17 at the door. Tickets for children are $7 each. Shows at TDW frequently sell out, so advance reservations are strongly recommended. Tickets may be ordered by phoning the TDW 24/7 ticket line at 513.598.8303, or by ordering online through the TDW website at www.thedramaworkshop.org.

Handicap Entrance at The Drama Workshop a Reality

TDW_New ramp(Cheviot, OH) A long-time goal of The Drama Workshop, the community theatre troupe based at The Glenmore Playhouse in Cheviot, is now a reality with the addition of a new handicap entrance. The improvement to the 96-seat facility was made possible by a generous grant from the Clare Schibi Memorial Foundation, Inc.

Since the 61-year-old theatrical company purchased and began renovations the former Glenmore Bowl building, a major goal has been to make the building accessible to its patrons with mobility issues. For the last three seasons, the only entrances to the building have required patrons to navigate steps at the front or side doors. Because of the way the building is configured, the only option to add a handicap ramp was to cut a new opening in the building.

Over the last two seasons, TDW’s patrons contributed over $1,500 towards the construction of a new ramp and entrance. A special production of the comedy PRECIOUS HEART in the summer of 2014 raised another $2,000, but these efforts fell far short of the modifications’ $14000 price tag. The Drama Workshop had all but given up on doing the project this year, until the Clare Schibi Memorial Foundation stepped in with its $8,000 contribution. TDW was able to cover the difference from its general operating budget, and the go-ahead for work was given.

“The Clare Schibi Memorial Foundation was honored to be able to support The Glenmore Playhouse,” said Teri Schibi, president of the foundation.  “Our hope is that this new handicap entrance will enable everyone to enjoy the arts and all that The Glenmore Playhouse has to offer.”

The new entrance will be formally dedicated at a ceremony at 12:30 pm on Sunday, November 8, prior to the final performance of TDW’s production of DEATHTRAP. The Glenmore Playhouse is located at 3716 Glenmore Ave in Cheviot. All are welcome to celebrate this major enhancement to Cheviot’s own community theatre. A limited number of tickets to the 2 pm performance of DEATHTRAP that day are also available. Reservations for the show may be made by calling 513.598.8303 or by visiting the group website at www.thedramaworkshop.org.

2016-2017 Season Announced by The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop is thrilled to announce its 2016-2017 season. Featuring a selection of classic comedies, musicals, and dramatic fare, theater-goers will be sure to enjoy themselves at TDW’s intimate, 96-seat performance venue.

Leading off the season in August, 2016, will be Michael Frayn’s farcical classic, NOISES OFF. Frayn takes the ‘play-within-a-play’ concept, and turns it on its ear, as we follow the hapless efforts of a British touring company trying to stage the comedy, “Nothing’s On”.  With a lead actress who can’t remember her lines, a dim-witted leading man, a gorgeous ingénue who can’t keep up with the insanity around her, and a director who’s trying to keep calm and carry on, nothing is going right. Widely known for featuring both sides of the set, which changes between acts, this audience favorite will be directed by Dennis Murphy and will run August 12 through August 28, 2016.

Following next will be the dramatic comedy, THE LION IN WINTER, by James Goldman.  At Christmas in 1183, an aging and conniving King Henry II plans a reunion where he hopes to name his successor. He summons his scheming but imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; his mistress, Princess Alais, whom he wishes to marry; his three sons, all of whom desire the throne; and the young but crafty King Philip of France. With the fate of Henry’s empire at stake, everybody engages in their own brand of deception and treachery to stake their claim. TDW welcomes Francis Boyle to their stage to direct this Tony-award winning play, running from October 7 through October 23, 2016.

In December, the cast of TDW’s award-winning 2013 production of NUNSENSE will return to perform a holiday variety show in NUNCRACKERS, by Dan Goggin. NUNCRACKERS is the first TV special taped in the Cable Access Studio built by Reverend Mother in the convent basement.  Featuring all new songs including Twelve Days Prior to Christmas, Santa Ain’t Comin’ to Our House, We Three Kings of Orient Are Us and It’s Better to Give than to Receive, this show is filled with typical NUNSENSE humor, some of your favorite carols, and a “Secret Santa” audience participation. We’re certain this NUNSENSE Christmas Show will make you laugh, and maybe tug at your heartstrings. It’s the perfect way to insure that your holiday season is merry and bright! NUNCRACKERS will be directed by Lizanne Ingram, and runs December 2 through December 18, 2016.

The first show of 2017 will be the Neil Simon classic comedy THE ODD COUPLE. Oscar Madison has the perfect life – nobody tells him what to do, whether it’s to clean his house or empty his refrigerator of months-old leftovers. But when his obsessively neat friend Felix Unger shows up on his doorstep, having been thrown out of his apartment by his wife, Oscar takes him in – with predictable results. Can two friends live together without driving each other crazy? We all know and love the classic movie and television series. The Drama Workshop’s version of this memorable classic will be directed by Ray Persing, and runs from February 24 through March 12, 2017.

TDW’s 2016-2017 season will close with the heartfelt tribute, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE. Written by Ted Swindley, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963, the show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’ unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight…27 songs in all.  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” Directed by Robert Weidle, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE runs from April 28 through May 14, 2017.

Tickets for TDW’s 2016-2017 season will be available beginning in February 2016.
