Auditions Announced for WORKING at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop is pleased to announce auditions for their upcoming production of the musical WORKING. Production dates are May 3-19. To see the full production schedule, check www.thedramaworkshop.org.

TIME/PLACE:
Auditions will take place at the Glenmore Playhouse 3716 Glenmore Ave, Cheviot, OH 45211

  • Sunday 12/9 7-10 pm
  • Monday 12/10 7-10 pm
  • Wednesday 12/12 7-10 pm

Doors will open at 6:30pm. We will audition in groups as they form – please arrive before 9 to ensure you can be placed in a group.

So that we know how many people to expect, please signup here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094EA8AA2DA57-auditions.

WHO SHOULD AUDITION:
The script is written for six actors to portray 26 characters, but we are expecting to expand the roster in order to maximize the diversity of the cast. We are looking for performers of all ages*, sizes, shapes, genders and ethnicities. This is not a “dancy” show – all levels of mobility are welcome and encouraged.

*Note on age* Previous versions of this show included a small boy, but in this version, the characters are all adults – the youngest is a fairly young man in his “first job” and the oldest are a female 40-year veteran teacher and a retired man, so all performers should have a “stage age” that fits within that range.

WHAT TO PREPARE:

  • ACTING: short (approx. 60 seconds) monologue/aside that directly addresses the audience. Performing with script-in-hand is perfectly acceptable, and auditionees can feel free to use material from the show itself if they like.
  • SINGING: Approximately 60 seconds of a pop/broadway style song. Bring sheet music with you for the accompanist, and an extra copy for yourself if needed. Singing from the score is acceptable. No CD’s or a capella auditions.
  • MOVEMENT: This is not a “dancy” show but there will be a quick evaluation of your ability to move in time to music and follow simple choreography, so wear good shoes for that.
  • CONFLICTS/RESUME/HEADSHOT: Please bring a list of conflicts/availability from February – May. Resume/headshots accepted but not required.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS:
Feel free to contact the director, Amy Waldfogle (amylee1028@gmail.com), the music director Allen Lindsey (alindsey@gmail.com) or the producer (workingtdw@gmail.com) with any questions.

ABOUT THE SHOW: (see www.mtishows.com for more information)
Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with American workers, Working paints a vivid portrait of the men and women that the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason and the housewife, just to name a few. Nominated for six Tony Awards, this classic has been updated for a modern age, featuring new songs by Tony Award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as favorites by Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia and James Taylor.

This new 2012 version of Working is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. While most of the professions have been updated, the strength of the show is in the core truths that transcend specific professions; the key is how people’s relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. The show, still set in contemporary America, contains timeless truths. This new version of Working allows the audience to get a rare glimpse of the actors and technicians, working to put on a show. This raw adaptation only enhances the realistic and relatable nature of the subject matter.

The Drama Workshop will present A TAFFETA CHRISTMAS November 30 – December 16. Performances will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., with a special Thursday evening performance on December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Performances will take place at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave., Cheviot, OH 45211.  Tickets are $18 if purchased online or by phone.  $20 if purchased at the door on the day of the performance. Tickets may be purchased by calling the TDW ticket line at 513-598-8303 or ordering online at www.thedramaworkshop.org.

A TAFFETA CHRISTMAS pays tribute to the sounds of The McGuire Sisters, The Fontane Sisters and The Chordettes.  The show is set in the Moose Lodge in “America’s Hometown” Muncie, Indiana, where The Dumont Television Network is featuring the Taffetas, four singing sisters on its weekly television show “Hometown Hoedown.”   The quartet sing a combination of period hits, new songs and holiday favorites. Spend an hour and a half with Kaye, Peggy, Cheryl and Donna and remember what Sunday night television was like on your 12-inch black and white screen!

The Taffetas will be played by Stefanie Adams, Jennifer Keith, Sue Kramer and Jennifer  Reinshagen. They will be accompanied by a three-piece band comprised of Linda Abbott, Eric Day and Charles Kleesattel.  Ms. Abbott also serves as both director and musical director.

Ms. Abbott says that “A TAFFETA CHRISTMAS is the perfect evening out for those who remember the gentle humor of television variety shows and the pleasant harmonies of girl groups in the ‘50’s.  You’re bound to hear your favorite hit songs of the period, as well as, your favorite Christmas tunes up close and personal in the intimate Glenmore Playhouse.  I can’t think of a more delightful way to celebrate the holidays with your spouse or your friends.”
