Auditions Announced for MADAGASCAR: A Musical Adventure and MARY POPPINS JR. at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

This year, we will be holding auditions in August for our last two MainStage productions of the 17-18 season.

All roles are paid positions.

Upon audition registration, you may indicate which shows you would like to be considered for this season.

Auditions are by appointment only.  You only need ONE audition appointment even if you are interested in both productions.

Children ages 9-17 and adults 18+ may make an audition appointment.  Appointments can be made for:

  • Monday, August 7th, 2017 between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM
  • Tuesday, August 8th, 2017 between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM
  • Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM
  • Thursday, August 10th, 2017 between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM

You MAY be asked to return and attend a “movement callback” on the day of your audition, which will take place from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

MADAGASCAR:  A Musical Adventure callbacks will take place on Saturday, August 12th, from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

MARY POPPINS JR. callbacks will take place on Sunday August 13th, from 1 PM to 6 PM.

Auditions and Callbacks are held at our offices located at:  4015 Red Bank Road, Cincinnati OH 45227.

Please bring a memorized song that best shows your vocal range. (1 minute max). Remember your PIANO SHEET MUSIC for your song as we will NOT be auditioning your a cappella skills.  An accompanist will be provided. Your sheet music MUST have the piano part, not just the vocal line, and music should be in a 3-ring binder with the cut CLEARLY marked for the accompanist.

You do NOT need to prepare a monologue.

You may be asked to show your dance ability, please bring appropriate movement clothes and shoes.

Please bring a RECENT 8×10 headshot and UPDATED performance resume.

Please plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes ahead of your appointment to check/correct previously submitted paperwork.

If we are ahead of schedule, we MAY audition you early.

Due to concentrated rehearsal periods, we ask that you do not have conflicts during rehearsals. In an effort to best facilitate all rehearsal times, all those auditioning will be asked to list all conflicts at the time of the audition. This season, all conflicts will result in a stipend adjustment. Please take note of when rehearsals begin, the day and evening tech and performance schedule, and bring your calendar with you to the audition.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

  • [MARTY] Marty is a zebra with dreams of exploring beyond the confines of the Central Park Zoo and into the wild. Cast a young man who is a solid singer and actor who also possesses a sweet disposition. Strong singer/actor/mover.
  • ALEX] Alex, the lion, is the main attraction at the Central Park Zoo and undoubtedly “The King of New York City.” He’s a fun-loving fella whose devotion to steak is matched only by his devotion to his friends. Strong singer/actor/mover.
  • GLORIA] Gloria, the hippopotamus, is a bold young lady with a maternal streak that shines when she’s with her three closest friends: Alex, Marty and Melman. Strong singer/actor/mover.
  • MELMAN] Melman is a kind-hearted giraffe who is a bit of a hypochondriac. He’s always just a little bit nervous, but when it comes down to it, he’ll rise to the situation. Strong singer/actor/mover with comic chops.
  • [MASON] Mason is a chimpanzee with a bone to pick: though highly intelligent, his species seems to get a bad reputation for being simpleminded, and he takes that quite personally.
  • [THE PENGUINS] [Skipper] serves as the captain of the Penguins group, giving orders with ease and command. [Kowalski] is Skipper’s second-in-command and a dutiful one at that. [Rico] is the brute of the group and can karate chop anything in sight. [Private] His primary job in the group is to maintain the cute and fuzzy disguise.
  • [THE LEMURS] The Lemurs are a wild band of creatures native to Madagascar trying desperately to avoid being eaten by the cat-like creatures called the Fossa. [King Julien] is their leader a comedian who can sing, dance, act and has intuitive comedic timing. [Maurice] is King Julien’s assistant who is not so welcoming to Madagascar’s new inhabitants.  [Mort] is the littlest of the Lemurs, who can barely speak.
  • [MALE & FEMALE ENSEMBLE] Skilled and versatile dancer/actor/singers of all ages to portray Lemurs, Foosa, Servers, Camaraman, Candy Hammernose, Passerby, Old Lady, Police Officer #1 and #2, Animal Control Officers, Newspaper Man and Ship’s Captain and possibly cover principal roles.  Tumbling skills and dance technique a HUGE plus!

  • [MARY POPPINS] Jane and Michael Banks’s new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo soprano with strong top notes, she should be able to move well. Vocal range Gb3-C6
  • [BERT] The narrator of the story, is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man. Strong singer/dancer/actor, Baritenor, Vocal Range: B2-F#4
  • [GEORGE BANKS] The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding “precision and order” in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn’t have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. Strong actor, a baritone, George may speak-sing as necessary.
  • [WINIFRED BANKS] George’s wife and Jane and Michael’s mother. A former actress, she is a loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she’s not up to the job of “being Mrs. Banks,” yet, she is, and more. Vocal Range: A3-D5
  • [JANE] The high-spirited 11 year old daughter of Mr. and Mr. Banks, is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness. Vocal Range: A3-F#5
  • [MICHAEL] The cute and cheeky 9 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents, Vocal Range: A3- E5
  • [BIRD WOMAN] An elderly woman covered in a patchwork of old shawls, with her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs to passersby, who ignore her as if she doesn’t exist. Sings “Feed the Birds.” There can be a gruff, folksy quality to her voice that reflects the hardness of her life.  Vocal range: Gb3-C5
  • [MRS. CORRY] Owns a magical gingerbread shop. She is a mysterious woman of great age who speaks with a Caribbean accent (or any accent that would make her seem exotic).
  • [MISS ANDREWS] George’s overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things – her way. A soprano with an alto belt, there can be some heaviness to her voice along with range. Vocal range: Gb3-F5
  • [KATIE NANA] Jane and Michael’s nanny at the beginning of the show. Overwhelmed and upset, she has absolutely had her fill of the Banks children.
  • [POLICEMAN] A neighborhood fixture who is respected by and observant of households on his beat.
  • [BANK CHAIRMAN] The head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed, is an Edwardian stuffed-shirt. Vocal range: C3-D4, He can speak/sing his lines if necessary.
  • [MRS. BRILL] The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harrassed, she’s always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn’t have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. Vocal Range: F#3-D#5
  • [ROBERTSON AYE] The houseboy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. Vocal range top: F3-G#4
  • [PARK KEEPER] Uniformed and officious, he makes sure no one breaks park regulations. His life is defined by rules, but he secretly hankers after his childhood.
  • [NELEUS] The statue of a young boy posed with a dolphin in the park. Neleus was separated from his father, Poseidon, and misses him very much. A small and lonely being, he is very happy to befriend Jane and Michael. Extremely technical dancer.
  • [MISS SMYTHE] The Bank Chairman’s humorless secretary.
  • [VON HUSSLER] A businessman seeking a loan from the bank for a shady business deal. He speaks with a German accent.
  • [JOHN NORTHBROOK] An honest business man seeking a loan to build a factory for his community. He speaks with an accent from Northern England.
  • [MALE & FEMALE ENSEMBLE] 4 men, 4 women, to portray various characters in the ensemble, including Chimney Sweeps, Parkgoers.  Seeking extremely strong actor/singer/dancers with pop/rock voices and hip-hop/jazz dance training.  Puppeteer and tumbling skills a HUGE plus!

Resident Artist Company Music Director Sought by The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

  • TCT MainStage – We welcome 107,000 children, teachers, and family members from across the region, to one of our four family-friendly and professional musical theatre productions at the historic Taft Theatre.
  • TCT On Tour – We see over 47,000 children and their families at one of our touring performances or during an arts-integration workshop or residency.
  • TCT Academy – Over 750 children will be provided fine arts instruction, including the group that participates in summer intensive STAR summer programs through which we offer professional musical theatre training to some of the region’s most talented youth.
  • TCT Showtime Series – Our newest division, creating a premium theatrical experience in an intimate theatrical setting, located at our new facility on Red Bank Road.

Position Overview

The Resident Music Director/ Teaching Artist is part a team of production assistants in the TCT Resident Artist Company.  Each Artist is responsible for the quality and success of assigned projects, and/or theatrical productions, including but not limited to MainStage, The Showtime Stage Series, TCT on Tour, TCT Academy, or special outreach projects.  The Production Assistant, Artist teaches with the TCT Academy, as assigned.  Depending on the Production Assistant project track for the season, the Production Assistant/Artist, may be asked to take on into a variety of creative and administrative duties as schedules would allow.  The Production Assistants works closely with teachers, students, and the other members of the Production department, but each report directly to a different branch within the organization.

The Resident Music Director reports directly to the Producing Artistic Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifying scripts for development in TCT Academy, TCT MainStage, TCT on Tour, and The Showtime Series.
  • Developing and implementing new projects/events associated with TCT Divisions.  (ie: Theatrical College Prep Convention)
  • Working with Marketing Department to cultivate audience growth.
  • Scouting potential for collaborations with other organizations or companies.
  • Representing TCT at industry events.
  • Teaching between 2-4 classes per session, unless excused to focus on a larger project.
  • Acting as the Resident Music Director for the organization.
  • Assisting with casting for musicals.
  • Playing piano for auditions.
  • Assisting TCT on Tour with production needs.
  • Compose/arrange music.
  • Create orchestrated tracks for new works.

Desired Qualifications:

A gifted collaborator with demonstrated ability to oversee projects. You must possess a high degree of integrity and transparency, a strong problem solver with a win/win attitude. We are seeking someone who is skilled at managing successful teams, with excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral.  You must possess the ability to connect with young audiences and students to teach valuable lessons pertaining to the performing arts.

Must be able to compose and arrange music.  Must be proficient in orchestrating tracks.

Ideal experience:

2 years of teaching experience, 2 years of project management experience.

Position Overview:

The 2017-2018 Season Properties Master will assist the organization in fulfilling its mission of educating, entertaining and engaging audiences of all ages through professional theatrical productions and arts education programming.  The Properties Master will be directly responsible for researching, designing, developing, and otherwise obtaining all props and rehearsal props for TCT MainStage, Showtime, and TCT on Tour divisions in collaboration with directors and stage managers of the productions, and the designated scenic designer of each show.  The Properties Master is also responsible for any prop needs associated with promotional appearances and photo shoots.

The Properties Master will report directly to the Technical Director, and will be responsible for maintaining and organizing future additions to our property stock.

Much of the props required for TCT on Tour can be pulled from our stock, located in our scenic shop facility in St. Bernard.  The ideal candidate will have experience creatively blending existing stock with their own design, building props from scratch, and purchasing creative solutions to satisfy the director’s vision.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:    

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Properties Master’s duties include the following responsibilities and qualifications:

  • Creating or otherwise obtaining props and rehearsal props for all MainStage, Showtime, and Touring Productions.
  • Shopping for necessary materials
  • Working with power tools
  • Altering existing props to fit the director’s vision
  • Transporting props to and from the shop or renting company, rehearsal studio, and performance location. (Please note Taft Load-in dates for MainStage)
  • Repairing damaged props as necessary
  • Tracking a materials budget and promptly turning in receipts
  • Creating a master prop matrix for each show with Stage Management Team
  • Reading and responding to rehearsal reports in a timely manner
  • Ability to produce within a given deadline and in adherence with the production schedule
  • Building relationships with other arts organizations, share prop stock
  • Working knowledge of electrics and implementing electronic functions
  • Must have a background in carpentry, wood-working and welding
  • Artistic painting experience
  • Sewing, hemming, and upholstery skills

Systems and Operations:            

The TCT Properties Master will have access to tools, stock, and facility use in our Scenic Shop, located in St Bernard, as well as space in our facility on Red Bank Road.

The TCT Properties Master will have access to a tax-exempt form and a company credit card for purchases.

The TCT Properties Master will have access to use a TCT van, to transport items to and from the performance venue.  Contractor must schedule the van with the Operations Manager. If the van is unavailable, the Properties Master may need to use their own mode of transportation.  Per TCT policy, a $.40 per mile reimbursement will be in effect between a TCT location and a third party location.

TCT locations include: our headquarters on Red Bank Road, our scene shop in St. Bernard, and Downtown at the Taft Theatre.

Third party locations include:  retail locations, rental pick-up locations, or donation pick-up locations.

TCT does not reimburse for miles to or from the contractor’s home and any location, or between two TCT locations.  The contractor must keep a detailed log of mileage.

The TCT Properties Master is covered under worker compensation.

The TCT Properties Master position is treated as a contractor and is paid a stipend.

Commitment:                                                                                                                                  

The TCT Properties Master contract begins August 1st 2017.  The Properties Master must be available for production meetings prior to and during the rehearsal process, technical and dress rehearsals as assigned, and to meet the following deadlines for completed show designs: (Note:  rehearsal props should be present by first blocking rehearsal and final performance props are due by load-in or first dress.)

  • The Cat in the Hat (Tour):  Rehearses August 7st-18th, 2017
  • Young Abe Lincoln (Tour): Rehearses August 21st-September 2nd, 2017
  • Peter Pan Jr (MainStage): Rehearses September 18th-October 20th, 2017 (Taft Load in October 16th, Load out October 30th)
  • Cinderella (MainStage): Rehearses November 5th– December 8th, 2017 (Taft Load in December 4th, Load-out December 18th) NOTE: Cinderella requires a partial prop rental with The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis.
  • Celebrate the Season (Tour): Rehearses November 8th– 22nd, 2017
  • Maya: A Writer’s Legacy (Tour): Rehearsals January 2nd– 12th, 2018
  • DreamWorks Madagascar (MainStage): Rehearses January 8th-February 9th, 2018 (Taft Load in February 5th, Load out February 19th)
  • Polkadots (Showtime Series): Rehearses February 5th-21st, 2018 (Strike: March 26th)
  • Mary Poppins Jr. (MainStage): Rehearses March 5th – April 6th, 2018 (Taft Load in April 2nd, Load out April 16th)

Minimum and Ideal Qualifications:

Education Level – Bachelor of Fine Arts or equivalent work experience.

Compensation/Payment Schedule:

  • A generous 10-month stipend of $22,000 will be paid to the contractor.
  • Contractor will be paid bi-monthly on the 1st and 15th of each month beginning August 15th, 2017 and ending May 31st, 2018.  $21,492 will be divided into 18 payments of $1,194.00.  A final payment of $508.00 will be paid upon strike of all TCT on Tour props on May 31st, 2018.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Stages Very First Summer Production

Extra fun before and after DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT

Cincinnati – This summer, The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, the country’s oldest professional theater for young audiences, invites families to be a part of its first summertime show, and its first full-scale production on the Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage: DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT!

Running June 2 – July 9, 2017, DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT will treat audiences to 36 up-close-and-personal performances in the small 152-seat performance space housed in the company’s facility on Red Bank Road in Hyde Park.

Show times include:

  • Fridays at 10 AM and 7 PM
  • Saturdays at 12 PM and 5 PM
  • Sundays at 2 PM and 5 PM

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett’s Showtime Stage is conveniently located in The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s building at 4015 Red Bank Road, Cincinnati, OH 45227. Just off I-71, close to US-50/Columbia Parkway, as well as the Norwood Lateral.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s production of DR. SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT is made possible by PNC Grow Up Great. The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is supported by the generosity of community contributions to the ArtsWave Campaign.
