Little Shop of Horrors Kicks Off The Carnegie’s
2021-22 Theatre Season

Beloved musical to be performed outdoors Aug. 13-15 and 20-22, 2021

COVINGTON, KY – It’s an American classic featuring a meek floral assistant, a woman he loves … and a giant, fast-talking – and singing – plant. This August, get ready to experience the musical magic of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. 

A show that has delighted audiences for more than 30 years, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS kicks off The Carnegie’s 2021-22 theatre season with two weekends of rousing outdoor performances at Covington Plaza at Riverfront Commons (144 Madison Ave., Covington, KY 41011). The show tells the tale of Seymour, a down-on-his-luck floral assistant who lives on Skid Row and spends his days pining for his co-worker (and the love of his life), Audrey.

Once Seymour meets a plant that can talk, he suddenly sees his fortune change as his new companion (whom he promptly names “Audrey II”) promises wealth, fame and his dream girl can all be his. There’s just one problem: In exchange for his dreams, he must be willing to submit to Audrey II’s nightmarish dreams of world domination.

Featuring a beloved score in a Motown style, you’ll be hopping and bopping to hits like “Suddenly Seymour,” “Skid Row,” and “Somewhere That’s Green.” Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and ALADDIN) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world.

“The magic of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS crosses generations, stage and film. Given the setting of the beautiful new amphitheater at Covington Plaza, it’s a perfect production to bring to life this summer,” said Carnegie Theatre Director Maggie Perrino. “From the classic Motown flavor of the music to the inherent entertainment value of the dialogue and characters, this show’s name belies the fun and flair within that’s made it a classic.”

The Carnegie’s production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS will be presented Friday, August 13, 8 p.m.; Saturday, August 14, 8 p.m.; Sunday, August 15, 6 p.m.; Friday, August 20, 8 p.m.; Saturday, August 21, 8 p.m.; Sunday, August 22, 6 p.m. Shows will be performed at Covington Plaza’s amphitheater, located near Roebling Bridge spanning the riverfront from Madison to Greenup Street.

Subscriptions and single tickets for the 2021-22 Theatre Season are on sale now. Full season subscriptions are $106 and $102 for Carnegie Members. Pick three subscriptions are available for $82-87 depending on selected titles. Individual tickets for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS are $32 for adults, $29 Carnegie members and $25 for students. 2021-2022 Season Announced by The Carnegie

COVINGTON, KY – The Theatre Series is back! The Carnegie’s 2021-22 season features a fast-talking plant; an intimate glimpse into the complicated life of a Hollywood icon; a heartwarming, family musical that will have everyone humming “Do-Re-Mi”; and the debut of a new script by a local arts leader.

The season opens in August with outdoor performances of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, a deliciously hilarious musical about a man-eating plant. In September, audience members will finally have the opportunity to see Judy Garland as she navigates a comeback in END OF THE RAINBOW, the final production of The Carnegie’s 2019-2020 season that was canceled due to COVID. Families are welcome to return to The Carnegie Theatre with a winter production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC in January of 2022. Closing out the season in April will be a new play by D. Lynn Meyers – in a first-of-its-kind regional collaboration, The Carnegie and NKU School of the Arts will work together to produce a new play by Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s Producing Artistic Director.

The year is 1968 and Judy Garland is set firmly on the comeback trail. The failed marriages, the suicide attempts and the addictions are all behind her. At forty-six and with new flame Mickey Deans at her side, she seems determined to carry it off and recapture her magic. But lasting happiness always eludes some people, and there was never any answer to the question with which Judy ended every show: “If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh, why, can’t I?”

END OF THE RAINBOW is a savagely funny drama featuring a glorious ensemble of Judy Garland hits such as “The Trolley Song,” “The Man that Got Away,” and of course “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The Carnegie Presents, in Collaboration with NKU School of the Arts
A New Play by D. Lynn Meyers | Playing April 1-16, 2022

In a first-of-its-kind regional collaboration, The Carnegie and NKU School of the Arts will work together to produce a new play by Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s Producing Artistic Director, D. Lynn Meyers. This bold pairing of educational and creative goals will allow the students of NKU’s School of the Arts Theatre + Dance Program to work intimately with Meyers to workshop and refine the new playscript through the ‘21-22 school year. The Carnegie will then debut this world premier script and kick-off the 20th anniversary of NKU’s YES festival, the oldest collegiate new-play festival in the country.

The Carnegie Hosts AMERICAN IDIOT Reunion on June 5

COVINGTON, KY – The music still rocks. The lyrics still have meaning … And in the wake of the world today, it’s the perfect time to embrace Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT.

The original cast of The Carnegie’s production of AMERICAN IDIOT will reunite for one night only on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. Originally brought to life to kick off The Carnegie’s 2019-20 theatre season, proceeds from the AMERICAN IDIOT reunion will benefit local performers and crew members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through The Carnegie’s Creative Disruption Committee (The Carnegie CDC). Tickets are $15.

“AMERICAN IDIOT is one of the most exciting, fun and popular productions we have done in recent memory. With this special one night only production, we’re offering a mini rock and roll experience with a bit of escapism – at a time when some need it most,” said Maggie Perrino, Theater Director for The Carnegie. “With so many of us reminiscing about and looking forward to better days, this show is perfect in the way it reflects the angst and struggle many of us are feeling today.”

A two-time Tony Award-winning musical based on the Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album of the same name, AMERICAN IDIOT follows three disaffected young men living in suburbia, who have dreams of a different life in the city. This one night only reunion show will feature some of the numbers from the original show including songs from the “American Idiot” album, as well as others from Green Day.

The Carnegie’s special one night only reunion show of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT starts with a happy hour with the cast at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021 with the show to follow at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through The Carnegie Box Office, Tuesday–Friday noon to 5 p.m., in person or by phone at (859) 957-1940 or online at www.thecarnegie.com. In Person Auditions by Appointment:

Please prepare 32 bars of a Motown or musical theatre song in the style of the show. Bring sheet music for the accompanist, as well as headshot and resume for production team. You may be asked to stay and read a scene or learn a dance call. Dates:

  • May 23: Auditions groups at 3pm, 4pm, and 5pm
  • May 24: Audition groups at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm
  • May 25: Audition groups at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm
  • Callbacks: By video if needed

  • 32 bars of a Motown or musical theatre song in the style of the show.
  • Comedic or serio-comic monologue no longer than 1 minute in length
  • Movement reel or 32 counts of improvised movement to a Motown song. Please try to incorporate some 60s social dance moves such as the pony, the jerk, the twist, etc.

ALSO NOTE:

  • You will be asked to turn in a full list of conflicts for rehearsal dates listed. Please have that prepared if asked to provide this info.
  • No performance conflicts will be accepted.
  • Cast members do not have to be the actual ages of the characters, but must be able to look age appropriate and act accordingly.
  • All roles are paid. Stipends offer will be between $650-$1000 for all roles. Not AEA eligible. No housing provided.
  • The Carnegie is committed to inclusive, non-traditional casting of classic musical theatre shows to give them new relevance and accessibility to all actors. All races, ethnicities, ages, gender identities, body types, and mobilities encouraged to apply. 

COVID-19 Policies
Please wear a mask to enter the building if auditioning in person. You will be allowed to remove it for your song, but will need to wear it while not actively auditioning.

The Carnegie fervently encourages all auditioners to seek the Covid-19 vaccination before attending auditions or rehearsals should they be cast. While we cannot ask you to disclose your vaccination status, it is in the best interest of our cast, crew, and artform if everyone is vaccinated in our show circle. A return to theatre-making is only possible if we help protect each other. 

AVAILABLE ROLES:

  • Seymour Krelborn: (Age 25 to 35. Vocal range G4 – A2) An insecure, put-upon florist’s clerk and eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills.
  • Audrey: (Age 25 to 35. Vocal range D5 to G#3) Bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of Seymour’s life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor.
  • Mushnik: (Age 55 to 65. Vocal range F4 to G2) The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour’s nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative.
  • Orin Scrivello: (Age 30 to 40. Vocal range G4 to G2) An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey’s abusive boyfriend, who is targeted by Seymour.
  • Voice of The Plant: (Vocal range G4 to G2) An actor/vocalist located offstage. The voice is that of a conniving, street-smart ‘villain.’ Rhythm and Blues styling with a touch of Soul.
  • Crystal: (Age 20 to 35. Vocal range F5 to Ab3) Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon are African-American street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality.
  • Ronnette: (Age 20 to 35. Vocal range F5 to Ab3) Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon are African-American street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality.
  • Chiffon: (Age 20 to 35. Vocal range F5 to Ab3) Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon are African-American street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality.
  • The Plant (Audrey II) (2 Roles): Puppeteers and Ensemble members. An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado, the plant has an appetite for human flesh that is appeased by Seymour. Puppeteers will focus on all sizes of the plant and appear in chorus numbers as ensemble performers.
  • Ensemble (2 Roles): Strong singers/actors with capable movement ability; they portray various people on the street, bums, and florist shop customers; these actors will also understudy the principals.

The Carnegie facility is home to The Carnegie Galleries, the Otto M. Budig Theatre, and the Eva G. The Carnegie receives ongoing operating support from Cincinnati International Wine Festival, The Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Kenton County Fiscal Courts, the Kentucky Arts Council and the City of Covington. The Carnegie is also supported by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign.
