Loveland Stage Company Presents DON’T DRINK THE WATER

LSC_Dont Drink the Water logoThe Loveland Stage Company unleashes the comedy play Don’t Drink the Water on May 11, 2018.  Veteran actor John Sloan is marking his second time as a director.  John made his directorial debut in the spring of 2017 with the hilariously successful A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  His producers are ACT award winner Tom Cavano and veteran actor Jill Gornet, his mother.

Don’t Drink the Water is a farce with the classical elements of mistaken identities, mayhem, and misadventure.  The story takes place inside an American embassy behind the Iron Curtain in the 1960’s.  American tourists, Walter Hollander, his wife Marion, and their adult daughter Susan rush into the embassy two steps ahead of the communist police. They suspect the Hollanders of spying while picture-taking in a restricted area.   Alas, the embassy is provisionally being run by the ambassador’s charming but bumbling son, Axel Magee. Axel, along with embassy staff and guests, manages to prolong the Hollanders’ asylum by muddling everything.  Amid the insanity, will the Hollander family ever be able to escape?

Don’t Drink the Water, written by playwright and comedian, Woody Allen, opened in 1966, at the Morosco Theatre in New York City and ran for 598 performances. Shortly after opening, the New York Daily News wrote that Don’t Drink the Water “moved the audience to great laughter … Allen’s imagination is daffy, his sense of the ridiculous is keen and gags snap, crackle and pop.”

The Loveland Stage Company cast stars Joel Lind as Walter, Cathy Alter as Marion, Morgan Carter as Susan and Alex Ross as Axel. The cast also features Tom Caruso, Becky Cole, Vincent Eldridge, Gary Giver, Christopher Koonce, Matt Lovell, Charlie Rader, and Pia Rader.

The Loveland Stage Company is proud to present Don’t Drink the Water, a play by Woody Allen. Set in an unnamed country behind the Iron Curtain, this is the story of an American Embassy and what can happen when the Ambassador must leave for business.

Not since 2013 has Loveland Stage Company produced a non-musical performance, and this selection is a hilarious return. Directed by Orchid Award winning director, John Sloan and produced by Orchid Award winners, Tom Cavano and Jill Gornet, this farcical tale covers everything from a love story to an international spy thriller. Don’t Drink the Water has been described as being “one big overfed American folk joke” and a “very funny situation comedy” by critic Otis L. Guernsey.

In this wacky comedy set against the backdrop of the Cold War, Walter Hollander, a middle-aged caterer from New Jersey, his wife Marion and daughter Susan run afoul of the authorities in a Communist country and are forced to hide in the American Embassy.  Over the next few weeks, they proceed to turn the Embassy upside-down while the beleaguered (and under-qualified) son of the Ambassador frantically tries to find a way to help them escape.  Adding to the chaos are a temperamental chef, a priest who’s a would-be magician and a vindictive sheik.  Will Howard and Marion ever get back to New Jersey, or will Krojack, the chief of the Secret Police, finally get them in his clutches?  Come on down and find out..

Auditions Announced for Youth Theatre Workshop/Production of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID at Loveland Stage Company

LSC_logoLoveland Stage Company is excited to announce AUDITIONS for the Summer Youth Theater Workshop/Production of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Auditions:

  • April 28th from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • April 29th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
  • With callbacks (if needed) on April 30th from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

Children 8-18 are welcome to audition and work/learn about everything backstage too.

Show dates are July 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21 & 22.

Expectations for Auditions

What to bring:

  1. Dance/tap shoes if you have them, ballet slippers. Dress comfortably to be able to learn stage dance as well as show gymnastic and tumbling feats.
  2. Bring your summer schedule if you know it with dates you will be away and can definitely not change.
  3. Learn 30-45 seconds of a song that has some melody to it. I would like to hear your range as well as how well you can carry a tune.
  4. Bring your enthusiasm for the part if you want a particular part. Watch how others have done it….show me that you’re the best one there for the part.

What will happen?

  1. There will be some paperwork to fill out first with some basic information.
  2. We will take your photo in the green room to the left of the stage.
  3. We will have everyone up on the stage to sing; possibly as a group to warm up- then individually. This usually takes a while depending upon numbers, but all those involved want to hear what you can do. We will also have you sing the scales to get your range.
  4. We will then put everyone through some dance and tumbling moves by the choreographer.
  5. We will then read a bit from the script.

Callbacks:
This date will be April 30th and is another date for me to take a look at a few individuals one last time before casting. This doesn’t always mean you will be a particular part, as it depends how you stack up with others around you.

Auditions Announced for MEMPHIS at Loveland Stage Company

From the underground dance clubs of 1950’s Memphis, Tennessee, comes the Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Come along on this incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves – filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll.

For the audition:

  • Prepare 16-32 bars of a song that demonstrates your range and vocal ability. An accompanist will be provided or you may bring an instrumental track.
  • Be prepared to learn a short dance combination. (Bring appropriate shoes and attire).
  • Be prepared for cold readings from the script.

All roles are available for this show, a list of role descriptions are available below:

  • Huey: Male, Caucasian, 20s-30s. Motor-mouthed hero, who talks his way into becoming a DJ at a local white radio station. Ignores race barriers and eventually falls in love with Felicia, a black singer, which causes a whole new set of problems for Huey in a segregated 1950s Memphis. Tenor with a great feel for pop/rock/R&B.

  • Felicia: Female, African American, 20s-30s. Beautiful, wide-eyed. Fiercley gifted singer. Follows her heart and falls in love with Huey, despite knowing that a relationship between a white man and a black woman in predjudiced Memphis is doomed. High R&B Belt.

  • Delray: Male, African American, 30s-40s. Felicia’s older brother. Owns the club where she sings. Realistic, protective and aware of the realities of the segregation that exists in Memphis. Baritenor with great pop/rock/R&B voice.

  • Gladys: Female, Caucasian, 40s-60s. Huey’s Southern blue-collar mother. SHe loves her son but constantly worries. Strong singer with alto-belt mix; excellent actor with comic skills.

  • Gator: Male, African American Male, 20s-30s. Bartender at Delray’s. Hasn’t spoken since age five, when he saw his father killed. As the story progresses, Gator finds his voice. Requires an excellent actor. Comic timing a plus. Great R&B Baritenor.

  • Bobby: Male, African American male 20s-30s. Janitor at the radio station. Full of personality and heart. Great gospel voice. Role requires an actor who is comfortable with physicality, as he has a dance break in his show-stopping number. Comic skills a plus.

  • Mr. Simmons: Male, Caucasian, 40s-60s. Conservative owner of the radio station. Strong, Southern businessman. Great actor who is comfortable singing.

  • Ensemble: Males & Females, All ethnicities, All ages. Dancers who sing very well, to play various ensemble characters. Excellent athletic dancers who sing.
